Arts and Crafts Tiles: Morris to Voysey

Arts and Crafts Tiles: Morris to Voysey

The Arts and Crafts Movement was a reaction to the brutality of working life and the sterility of industrial design in Victorian Britain. Although Arts and Crafts was initially a mediaeval revival, the movement was always about the artist craftsman and the appropriate use of materials, rather than any single design tradition. The movement was inspired and led by William Morris, whose company was founded in 1861 and produced a full range of interior furnishings, including tiles. These were designed by Morris himself, and also by leading artists and architects of the day such as Edward Burne Jones and Philip Webb. The term Arts and Crafts was formalised in the late 1880s, and many designers, artists and craftsmen joined Morris in this new movement, and leading designers including Walter Crane and C. F. A. Voysey produced distinctive and now highly collectable ceramic tiles that were used to decorate the bathrooms and the fireplaces of the wealthy and discerning. This book, with its companion on the work of William de Morgan, is the first complete introduction to British Arts and Crafts tiles from 1860 to 1920.

David D. Morrison, retired Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) branch line manager and railroad historian, has compiled rare photographs to showcase the shops that power the LIRR, the busiest railroad in North America. The LIRR provides passenger rail service from Midtown Manhattan to to the far ends of Long Island at Greenport and Montauk. A vast operation such as this requires a huge fleet of locomotives and cars. The reliability of the fleet rests mainly upon the shop maintenance facility. The Morris Park Shops, opened in 1889 and closed in the early 2000s, provided over a century of maintenance and repair service, allowing the LIRR to develop and expand through the years. The complexity of the shop facility, from the days of steam locomotives to multiple-unit electric cars and diesel locomotives, is a fascinating chapter in LIRR history.

"Writing in the full-tilt style of Carl Hiaasen" (The Washington Post), this jaundiced political satire was ripped from the headlines and penned by an author who's met the characters, heard the conversations, and seen the plot twists firsthand. Meet Morris Feldstein, a pharmaceutical salesman living and working in western Long Island who loves the Mets, loves his wife Rona, and loves things just the way they are. He doesn't enjoy the news; he doesn't like to argue. Rona may want to change the world; Morris wants the world to leave him alone. Morris does not make waves. But one day Morris is seduced by a lonely, lovesick receptionist at one of the offices along his sales route, and in a moment of weakness charges a non-business expense to his company credit card. No big deal. Easy mistake. But the government's top-secret surveillance program, anchored by a giant, complex supercomputer known as NICK, thinks differently. NICK begins to thread together the connected strands of Morris's life--his friends, family, his traffic violations, his daughter's political leanings, his wife's new patients, and even his failed romantic endeavors--and Morris becomes the government's public enemy number one. In his "laugh-out-loud funny" (Chris Matthews) debut novel, author "Steve Israel reveals his inner Jon Stewart" (Daily News, New York). The Global War on Morris toes the line between recent breaking headlines and a future that is not that difficult to imagine: "Why read this when one can see Washington insiders acting like buffoons in farcical situation on CNN? This is funnier than Wolf Blitzer, that's why" (Library Journal).
History of Morris Dancing, 1438-1750

History of Morris Dancing, 1438-1750

John Forrest

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO PRESS

Morris dancing, one of the more peculiar of the English folk customs, has been greatly misunderstood. Traditional scholarship on this custom has been based on the assumption that morris dancing is one of the pagan calendar rituals, a preconception held by many folklorists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Now, building upon his previous work with Michael Heaney of the Bodleian Library in Annals of Early Morris, John Forrest carefully analyses a wealth of evidence to show that morris dancing does not, in fact have pagan or ancient origins. His examination of early documentation draws morris traditions into the wider area of communal customs and public celebrations, showing the passage of dance ideas between groups of people who until now have been considered folklorically distinct. Careful, detailed, and encyclopedic, The History of Morris Dancing, 1458-1750 is an essential reference work for specialists in English drama and social historians of the period.

Paris, Ontario is located at the Forks of the Grand, where the Grand and Nith Rivers meet. It was first settled by Hiram Capron who came to Norfolk County in 1822 where he helped to establish one of Upper Canada's first iron foundries. In 1830 he constructed a grist-mill and named the town after the gypsum deposits that were mined nearby. Gypsum is used to make plaster of Paris. Paris is often referred to as the "cobblestone capital of Canada" because of the many cobblestone buildings that are still found in the town. Cobblestone architecture refers to the use of cobblestones embedded in mortar to erect walls of houses and commercial buildings. We often make a trip to Paris to wander the streets, visit the shops and have a cup of coffee at Tim Horton's.Glen Morris is located on East River Road, Brant County Road #14. The German Woolen Mill was built in 1867 and operated for several years. The Glen Morris General Store is located on Princess Street. Glen Morris is located about 22 kilometres northwest of Brantford, 11 kilometres southwest of Cambridge, and 11 kilometres northeast of Paris. My great grandmother, Elizabeth Carter Cromwell, is buried in Glen Morris Cemetery.
