One Life: The True Story of Sir Nicholas Winton and the Prague Kindertransport
Sir Nicholas Winton rescued 669 Jewish children from Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia at the brink of World War II. Most never saw their parents again. This is his story. *Now a major motion picture starring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham Carter* In 1938, 29-year-old "Nicky" cancelled a ski trip and instead spent nine months masterminding a seemingly impossible plan to rescue hundreds of Jewish children and find them homes in the United Kingdom. Over 6,000 people are alive today because of his efforts. What motivated an ordinary man to do something so extraordinary? This book, written by his daughter, Barbara, explores the 106-year life of an incredible humanitarian, a man whose legacy only came to public light decades later. His life story is a clarion call to choose action over apathy in the face of injustice, and a reminder that every one of us can change the world. "If something is not impossible, then there must be a way to do it."

Pioneer life and local history have been a passion for Robert and Anna Campbell, lifelong residents of Nicholas County, West Virginia. They were amazed at how Irish, English, and Scottish ancestors survived in the mountains for generations. Robert was known as a storyteller. Family and friends would sit on the porch or in the living room for hours and listen to his detailed accounts of family and life in the central West Virginia mountains. One of Robert's favorite stories was telling how his grandfather Campbell built a dynamo to produce electricity for the family's mill on Muddlety Creek and was instrumental in getting electricity to the town of Summersville. Anna loves history and writing. She enjoys talking and corresponding with others to learn more about ancestors and families who settled in the area. The Campbells were approached by the owner of The Nicholas Chronicle to write stories for a weekly newspaper column, The Passage of Time, published from 2008-2012. They received positive response to the stories and had several requests that the stories be published in a book. Robert passed away in 2015, but the stories that he and Anna cherished and shared with others will continue to live on. The stories with pictures portray the culture, character, creativity, Christian values, and the caring people that made Nicholas County, West Virginia a unique place to live for generations. Some of the families in the stories include: Starbuck, Campbell, Reynolds, Murphy, Gregory, Breckinridge, Alderson, Brown, Cavendish, Harlow, McClung, Tyree, Bays, Duffy, Bryant, Baker, Hill, Sebert, Whitman, Beirne, Dorsey, Cummings, and Grose. The stories loosely trace the roots of Nicholas County residents from the 1600's to 2012. Events such as World War II and how it impacted the people of Nicholas County are featured in several stories. Businesses such as Campbell Electric Company, Walker Brothers (brick and pottery), Peters Creek Coal Company, and Ely-Thomas Lumber Company are featured in the stories. Other stories focus on community establishments such as schools, churches, cemeteries, and notable buildings. Pioneer life stories on aprons; quilts and coverlets; wash day in Appalachia; crocks, churns, and stone jars; handwritten letters and cards; home deliveries; and children's games provide insights into earlier times.Robert and Anna Campbell turned their appreciation of those who preceded them into a gift for the people of Nicholas County and beyond. The stories are the threads that bind the past to the present to create a tapestry that provides context for the future.
The Last of the Tsars - Nicholas II and the Russia Revolution
The story has been told many times, but Service's deep understanding of the period and his forensic examination of previously untapped sources, including the Tsar's diaries and recorded conversations, as well as the testimonies of the official inquiry, shed remarkable new light on his troubled reign, also revealing the kind of Russia that Nicholas wanted to emerge from the Great War The Last of the Tsars is a masterful study of a man who was almost entirely out of his depth, perhaps even willfully so. It is also a compelling account of the social, economic and political ferment in Russia that followed the February Revolution, the Bolshevik seizure of power in October 1917 and the beginnings of Lenin's Soviet socialist republic.

The inspiration for this book came from the best aphorists of world history: Lichtenberg, Montaigne, Goethe, Nietzsche, Karl Kraus, and of course Nassim Nicholas Taleb. If you want to dig deeper into Taleb's concepts, I hope these comments may help you a bit with it.What I did isn't much - I just applied his concepts to the world and the thoughts other people had about it (and said thoughts), but still managed to come to some interesting conclusions, and have some ideas of my own.Since I am too lazy to do more work, I decided to write a book of aphorisms, delivering as much information to you as possible in a text as short as possible. In 2014, I discovered Taleb's books (starting with "Antifragile"); in 2016, I contacted him via the social networks; in 2018, I decided to write my first book, inspired by him.Maestro Taleb is with little doubt the greatest living philosopher and polymath. He changed my way of thinking, and catalysed it. For all I learned from him, I owe him a lot. This book shall pay some of this intellectual debt, among other tings. That's it.

The Plays and Poems of Nicholas Rowe

The Plays and Poems of Nicholas Rowe

Nicholas Rowe was the first Poet Laureate of the Georgian era. A fascinating and important yet largely overlooked figure in eighteenth-century literature, he is the ‘lost Augustan’. His plays are important both for the way they address the political and social concerns of the day and for reflecting a period in which the theatre was in crisis. This edition sets out to demonstrate Rowe’s mastery of the early eighteenth century theatre, especially his providing significant roles for women, and examines the political and historical stances of his plays. It also highlights his work as a translator, which was both innovative and deeply in tune with current practices as exemplified by John Dryden and Alexander Pope. This is the first scholarly edition of all Rowe’s plays and poems and is accompanied by 15 musical scores and 31 black and white illustrations. The first three volumes arrange his plays chronologically with the first volume presenting the early plays, The Ambitious Step-Mother, Tamerlane, and The Fair Penitent; the second volume the middle plays, The Biter, Ulysses, and The Royal Convert; and the third volume his late period plays, The Tragedy of Jane Shore and The Tragedy of the Lady Jane Grey. The subsequent volumes cover his translation of Lucan’s Pharsalia, described by Samuel Johnson as one of the greatest productions in English poetry, and his own original poetry — which was often composed for specific occasions. Each volume contains a newly written explanatory introduction which precedes the full edited text. Appendices covering dedications, prologues and epilogues, performance history, the related music and textual apparatus are also included. The edition comes with a consolidated bibliography for ease of reference.
If You Could Read My Mind - A Nicholas Turner Novel
What happens when a young, fast-rising cop, married to the love of his life, suddenly loses his unborn child to miscarriage, loses his wife to cancer, and loses his job because of a violent incident with a suspect? He decides to have drinking binges to try to forget. That's what happened to Nicholas Turner ten years ago. Now, thanks to help from his sister, Melissa, and his best friend, FBI Agent Marcus Moore, Nicholas has almost conquered the drinking, and has become a private investigator that specializes in cases concerning children. Meredith Richardson's daughter, Karen, has been kidnapped, and the city's police department doesn't seem to be much help. At the suggestion of Marcus Moore, Meredith hires Nicholas to find the girl. But Nicholas has unexpected help. A little girl, that apparently only Nicholas can see, is helping him with the case. She appears when Nicholas needs a clue, then disappears just as quickly. Who is this little girl? Why is Nicholas so attracted to his client? Who kidnapped his client's little girl? And why has this case become so deadly? Inspired by the classic song by Gordon Lightfoot, If You Could Read My Mind is a heartwarming story about redemption, romance, and second chances.

Nicholas Nickleby is Charles Dickens's third published novel. He returned to his favourite publishers and to the format that was considered so successful with The Pickwick Papers. The story first appeared in monthly parts, after which it was issued in one volume. The style is considered to be episodic and humorous, though the second half of the novel becomes more serious and tightly plotted. Dickens began writing 'Nickleby' while still working on Oliver Twist and while the mood is considerably lighter, his depiction of the Yorkshire school run by Wackford Squeers is as moving and influential as those of the workhouse and criminal underclass in Twist.
