Mechanics of Failure Mechanisms in Structures

Mechanics of Failure Mechanisms in Structures

R.L. Carlson; G.A. Kardomateas; J.I. Craig

Springer
2012
sidottu
This book focuses on the mechanisms and underlying mechanics of failure in various classes of materials such as metallic, ceramic, polymeric, composite and bio-material. Topics include tensile and compressive fracture, crack initiation and growth, fatigue and creep rupture in metallic materials, matrix cracking and delamination and environmental degradation in polymeric composites, failure of bio-materials such as prosthetic heart valves and prosthetic hip joints, failure of ceramics and ceramic matrix composites, failure of metallic matrix composites, static and dynamic buckling failure, dynamic excitations and creep buckling failure in structural systems. Chapters are devoted to failure mechanisms that are characteristic of each of the materials. The work also provides the basic elements of fracture mechanics and studies in detail several niche topics such as the effects of toughness gradients, variable amplitude loading effects in fatigue, small fatigue cracks, and creep induced brittleness. Furthermore, the book reviews a large number of experimental results on these failure mechanisms. The book will benefit structural and materials engineers and researchers seeking a “birds-eye” view of possible failure mechanisms in structures along with the associated failure and structural mechanics.

The Letters of Dominique Chaix, Botanist-Curé
etween 1772 and 1799, Dominique Chaix wrote 170 letters to Dominique Villars. B None of the letters that Vtllars wrote in response have survived, and there is evidence to indicate that Chaix simply did not retain incoming letters once they had served their informative purpose. Villars, blessed with more ample facilities, kept incoming letters; and those from Chaix are now preserved in the Bibliotheque Municipale de Grenoble in three volumes under the number RI0073. A transcription of them for public use was made earlier in this century under the supervision of Georges de Manteyer [Georges-Barthelemy-Marie Pinet de Manteyer] when he was archivist of the Department of Hautes-Alpes. I am gready indebted to Mme Marie-Fran~ise Bois-Delatte, Conservateur des Fonds Dauphinoise at the Bibliotheque Municipale d'Etude et d'lnformation in Grenoble, not merely for making these letters available to me, but for her eagerness to see someone take an interest in Dauphinois botanists. I met a similar friendly interest at the Archives du Departement des Hautes-Alpes in Gap. I thank M. Pierre-Yves Playoust, Directeur des Services, and members of his archival staff for the cordial assistance in my search for materials documenting the career of the abbe Chaix. I am also obligated to the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh for providing me photocopies of Villars' letters in their Allioni collection. They relate to the composition of a flora for Dauphine and are revealing of Villars' character.
The Semantic Foundations of Logic Volume 1: Propositional Logics
This book grew out of my confusion. If logic is objective how can there be so many logics? Is there one right logic, or many right ones? Is there some underlying unity that connects them? What is the significance of the mathematical theorems about logic which I've learned if they have no connection to our everyday reasoning? The answers I propose revolve around the perception that what one pays attention to in reasoning determines which logic is appropriate. The act of abstracting from our reasoning in our usual language is the stepping stone from reasoned argument to logic. We cannot take this step alone, for we reason together: logic is reasoning which has some objective value. For you to understand my answers, or perhaps better, conjectures, I have retraced my steps: from the concrete to the abstract, from examples, to general theory, to further confirming examples, to reflections on the significance of the work.
Mathematical Intuition

Mathematical Intuition

"Intuition" has perhaps been the least understood and the most abused term in philosophy. It is often the term used when one has no plausible explanation for the source of a given belief or opinion. According to some sceptics, it is understood only in terms of what it is not, and it is not any of the better understood means for acquiring knowledge. In mathematics the term has also unfortunately been used in this way. Thus, intuition is sometimes portrayed as if it were the Third Eye, something only mathematical "mystics", like Ramanujan, possess. In mathematics the notion has also been used in a host of other senses: by "intuitive" one might mean informal, or non-rigourous, or visual, or holistic, or incomplete, or perhaps even convincing in spite of lack of proof. My aim in this book is to sweep all of this aside, to argue that there is a perfectly coherent, philosophically respectable notion of mathematical intuition according to which intuition is a condition necessary for mathemati cal knowledge. I shall argue that mathematical intuition is not any special or mysterious kind of faculty, and that it is possible to make progress in the philosophical analysis of this notion. This kind of undertaking has a precedent in the philosophy of Kant. While I shall be mostly developing ideas about intuition due to Edmund Husser! there will be a kind of Kantian argument underlying the entire book.

This book is the product of the efforts of a number of people dating back to 1956, when Professor T. Kemp, then head of the University Institute for Human Genetics in Copenhagen, proposed a study on the importance of x-ray irradiation in pregnant women. Under the guidance of Professors Dyhre Trolle and Preben Plum of the Uni versity Hospital in Copenhagen, the investigation was expanded to deal with prenatal and perinatal factors of importance for the development of the infant. The corpus of medical data that resulted from these efforts was collected and organized by Drs. Bengt Zachau-Christiansen and Aage Villumsen. The project's birth cohort included all deliveries that took place at the State University Hospital, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, over a two-year period from 1959 to 1961. As part of the perinatal study, the mothers and children were subjected to regular and thorough medical examinations during pregnancy and through the first year of the child's life. The detailed data from these examinations, as well as information about treatment administered, were systematically collected and coded.
Capital Budgeting Under Conditions of Uncertainty

Capital Budgeting Under Conditions of Uncertainty

The business environment, particularly after the continuing oil crises of the seventies, can be characterized as evolving rapidly in complex and often unpre dictable ways. Such things as high interest and inflation rates, fluctuating ex change rates, volatile commodity markets, and increasing political turmoil have led to a situation in which explicit consideration of environmental dynamics is becoming much more important for successful business planning than was true in the past. Companies are finding that it is no longer possible to conduct "busi ness as usual" under these changing circumstances. Rather, decision makers are having to be more cognizant of the many sources of uncertainty that could have serious impacts on the continued prosperity of the firm, as well as of actions that can be taken so that the company can thrive in spite of these greater uncertainties. Businesses have responded to these challenges by giving more thorough con sideration to strategic issues. Whereas in the past the steady progression of mar kets and technology was taken for granted, the uncertainties associated with increased worldwide competition, as well as with other exogenous factors, have vii viii INTRODUCTION forced companies to think more about flexibility. This involves not only how best to exploit profitable current options, but also how to position themselves at present to be able to respond appropriately to threats and opportunities as they arise in the future. Unfortunately, in this redirection of outlook, the fmance profession has not kept pace.

Jooga on mielenliikkeiden - ajatusten, mielikuvituksen - hillitsemistä. Kun mielen toiminta on saatu aisoihin, sielu on jatkuvasti tietoinen oikeasta luonteestaan. Mielen toiminnan hillitseminen tapahtuu joogaharjoitusten ja ei-kiintymyksen avulla.
