The Power to Choose

The Power to Choose

When stress, pressure and difficult relationships take over, it's easy to react on autopilot - to say what we don't mean, or pull away when we most want connection. Yet even in the hardest moments, there is always a choice, and learning to use that choice changes how we meet the people and pressures in our lives. In The Power to Choose, coach and author Robbie Swale offers a practical, compassionate guide to moving from automatic reaction to conscious awareness. Through honest stories, psychological insight and tools you can use right away, he shows how small shifts in attention can transform how we experience stress, conflict and complexity - helping us find steadiness, connection and calm. Drawing on his work with leaders, entrepreneurs and creatives around the world, Swale explores how to cultivate the inner space that allows us to choose: how we lead, how we relate, and how we live with purpose, even when life is demanding. Praise for Robbie Swale and The Power to Choose "Each time I talk with Robbie, he gives me a new thought to think about." - Robert Holden, author, Authentic Success "Robbie introduced me to my own potential and I am so grateful to have met him." - Shivangi Raghuvanshi, Lead Program Manager, Asia, Microsoft "Whilst my workload is exactly the same, if not increased, I feel more in control of my time, my diary, my work, my life." - Professor Leonie Taams, King's College London About the Author Robbie Swale is an executive coach, writer and podcaster. He is the author of five books, including The 12-Minute Method series, and host of The Coach's Journey and The 12-Minute Method podcasts. He works with leaders and entrepreneurs worldwide.

Surabaya, 1945-2010, presents the recent history of one of Indonesia's great port cities as viewed from a crowded low-income neighborhood (kampung) called Dinoyo. By following the lives of Dinoyo residents over three generations, it provides a new perspective on landmark moments in the country's modern history, including the war for independence, the destruction of the Communist Party, anticrime campaigns, neigh-borhood improvement pro-jects, the fall of the New Order, and the rise of democracy, as well as more recent government campaigns to fight terrorism and promote urban renewal.

A richly photographed presentation of dozens of highly prized, rare, and unique orchid species. For centuries, the orchid family (Orchidaceae) has enjoyed a special status among botanists and collectors. With over 25,000 species across six continents, their remarkable taxonomic diversity--showcasing dazzling variations in color, form, and adaptation--makes them one of the most coveted living treasures. The renowned floral designer, photographer, and dedicated plant hunter invites readers into the complex, beautiful, and often surprising world of orchids. This book showcases in full color dozens of the most exceptional orchid species from across the globe, with notes on what makes each botanically important or unique. An artistic photographic approach reveals the structure of each flower, bringing pattern, scale, and form into focus through a deconstructed view--a vibrant modern homage to classic herbarium plates. This allows for an unprecedented, close study of each flower's morphology, revealing astonishing natural history facts such as how highly specialized coevolution attracts exclusive pollinators; the vast spectrum of orchid bloom sizes, from pinhead-tiny to as large as a dinner plate; and their astonishing habitat range, from shaded tropical valleys to chilly wind-blasted mountaintops. An essential volume for orchid enthusiasts and flower lovers alike, this combination of artful photography and accessible-yet-rigorous botanical insight gives readers a deeper understanding of orchids and allows them to explore rare specimens that are truly living masterpieces of evolution.
A Funny Thing Happened on The Way To The Sex Party
"I've had most of the 20 odd short stories inside me for years and every now and then they'd put pressure on my creative colon and beg to be released.." After decades spent on the fringes of politics, publishing and Australia's sex industry, Robbie Swan finally tells the stories he could never quite leave behind. Part memoir and part social history A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Sex Party is a collection of short stories drawing on Swan's 25 years as a magazine editor and parliamentary lobbyist for the adult industry, a world where censorship battles, moral crusades, unlikely friendships and political absurdities collide daily. In the book, he reveals the human side of an often-misunderstood industry: the humour, the resilience and the strange, sometimes surreal encounters that shaped a generation of activists and outsiders. Spanning half a century and bookended by the creation of the Australian Sex Party with his partner, trailblazing MP Fiona Patten these stories chart how a life spent challenging taboos and fighting hypocrisy ultimately helped reshape public debate and law reform. Wry, candid and funny, this is a behind-the-scenes look at the remarkable profiles of people behind the intersection of sex, politics and power.

For the press tour following the record-breaking release of Greta Gerwig s award-winning, acclaimed Barbie movie, producer and star Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal immersed themselves in some of Barbie s most iconic outfits and curated vintage pieces, then approached designers, from Giorgio Armani to Donatella Versace, to create looks inspired by the doll-size originals. Many of these looks were not seen as the official Barbie press tour was cut short so Margot and Andrew worked with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot her in the looks exactly as they were curated: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Streamline luggage at the airport, and beyond. Accompanying McDean s sumptuous photography are original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel s Barbie fashion archives, and the designers sketches and Polaroids from fittings, layered into evocative collage by art director Fabien Baron. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks (from Olivier Rousteing and Michelle Ochs to Manolo Blahnik and Jeremy Scott), this unique book blends the serious chic of high fashion with the serious fun of Barbie world the dolls, the history, and the style that have captured imaginations for 65 years. Reconstructing the human and natural environment of the Creek Indians in frontier Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee, Robbie Ethridge illuminates a time of wrenching transition. Creek Country presents a compelling portrait of a culture in crisis, of its resiliency in the face of profound change, and of the forces that pushed it into decisive, destructive conflict. Ethridge begins in 1796 with the arrival of U.S. Indian Agent Benjamin Hawkins, whose tenure among the Creeks coincided with a period of increased federal intervention in tribal affairs, growing tension between Indians and non-Indians, and pronounced strife within the tribe. In a detailed description of Creek town life, the author reveals how social structures were stretched to accommodate increased engagement with whites and blacks. The Creek economy, long linked to the outside world through the deerskin trade, had begun to fail. Ethridge details the Creeks' efforts to diversify their economy, especially through experimental farming and ranching, and the ecological crisis that ensued. Disputes within the tribe culminated in the Red Stick War, a civil war among Creeks that quickly spilled over into conflict between Indians and white settlers and was ultimately used by U.S. authorities to justify their policy of Indian removal. |Reconstructing the human and natural environment of the Creek Indians in frontier Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee, Ethridge presents a compelling portrait of a culture in economic, political, and ecological crisis; of its resiliency in the face of profound change; and of the forces that pushed it into decisive, destructive conflict.

In this sweeping regional history, anthropologist Robbie Ethridge traces the metamorphosis of the Native South from first contact in 1540 to the dawn of the eighteenth century, when indigenous people no longer lived in a purely Indian world but rather on the edge of an expanding European empire. Using a framework that Ethridge calls the ""Mississippian shatter zone"" to explicate these tumultuous times, From Chicaza to Chickasaw examines the European invasion, the collapse of the precontact Mississippian world, and the restructuring of discrete chiefdoms into coalescent Native societies in a colonial world. The story of one group--the Chickasaws--is closely followed through this period.
