Jews in Wisconsin

Jews in Wisconsin

Sheila Terman Cohen

Wisconsin Historical Society Press
2016
nidottu
Unlike the other cultural groups covered in the People of Wisconsin series, the Jews who have made their home in Wisconsin are united not by a single country of origin, but by a shared history and set of religious beliefs. This diverse group found their way to America's heartland over several centuries from Germany, Russia, and beyond, some fleeing violence and persecution, others searching for new opportunities, but all making important contributions to the fabric of this state's history. Through detailed historical information and personal accounts, Sheila Terman Cohen brings to life the stories of their various trials and triumphs. Jews in Wisconsin details their battles against anti-Semitism, their efforts to participate in the communities they joined, and their successes at holding onto their own cultural identities. In addition to excerpts of Cohen's many interviews with Wisconsin Jews, Jews in Wisconsin also features the compelling journals of German immigrant Louis Heller, a tradesman who established himself in Milwaukee, and Russian immigrant Azriel Kanter, who details the perilous journey his family embarked on to escape anti-Semitism in his home country and make a new life in Wisconsin.

Novice catalogers in special libraries, who are often expected to fulfill commitments to online bibliographic networks and cataloging consortia, will find this a thorough but uncomplicated guide to standard cataloging. Covering all aspects of bibliographic description, access points, indexing, classification, and related activities (e.g., authority control, catalog management, filing), the book focuses on the needs and cataloging problems encountered in special libraries, such as the cataloging of electronic media, technical reports, and unpublished materials. More than 100 examples illustrate the principles and practices involved. Chapters on law, science and technology, medical, business, music, and art libraries cover those materials and specific tools in depth, including subject- and profession-specific nonbook media, thesauri, classifications, and so on. Chapters on policies and catalog decision making point out advantages and disadvantages of various alternatives.
A Researcher's Guide to Sources on Soviet Social History in the 1930s
The Stalin era has been less accessible to researchers than either the preceding decade or the postwar era. The basic problem is that during the Stalin years censorship restricted the collection and dissemination of information (and introduced bias and distortion into the statistics that were published), while in the post-Stalin years access to archives and libraries remained tightly controlled. Thus it is not surprising that one of the main manifestations of glasnost has been the effort to open up records of the 1930s. In this volume Western and Soviet specialists detail the untapped potential of sources on this period of Soviet social history and also the hidden traps that abound. The full range of sources is covered, from memoirs to official documents, from city directories to computerized data bases.
Anti-Saints

Anti-Saints

Sheila Delany

University of Alberta Press
2012
pokkari
Compiled by a radical journalist and poet in the early days of the French Revolution, these subversively satirical lives of women saints sought to win both women and men away from religion. Though based on authentic hagiography, Maréchal's "new" legendary introduces a skeptical, rationalist perspective that anticipates modern critical approaches. Along with Delany's thorough introduction and notes, Anti-Saints offers a new perspective on the cultural climate of the French Revolution and a strikingly modern contribution to our own public conversation on religion. A must for scholars and non-specialists alike, and lovers of audacious wit.
Tending the Remnant Damage

Tending the Remnant Damage

Sheila Peters

Press Porcepic,Ontario
2001
pokkari
Sheila Peters makes her impressive fiction debut with a collection of loosely linked stories whose characters, whether they live in the Queen Charlotte Islands or the Prairies, are ordinary men and women who have seemingly everyday experiences that glimmer with the extraordinary. Her spare, stripped-down prose, leavened with sly humour and a gift for poetic resonance, reminds one of the work of Alice Munro or Sandra Birdsell. Peters creates people who often feel out of sync with the spiritual, emotional, and physical environments they find themselves in. Two old people on a farm try to comprehend the inevitable fate befalling them, all the while contemplating the strange goings-on of neighbours. A young woman on the lam from Texas finds herself beached in the Queen Charlottes on her way to Alaska. A punked-up Vancouver girl accompanies a crusty grandmother on a tense hunting trek in the drizzly woods. Their universe is our universe, but with a twist that makes it refreshingly new and decidedly different.

Whether you like sleeping among spirits or simply enjoy reading a good ghost story, Haunted Inns of the Southeast is your guide to ninety mysterious places across nine states. At the Don Cesar Resort in St. Petersburg, Florida, you might witness a man dressed like Panama Jack chatting with workers. He is Thomas Rowe, the resort's founder, who died more than sixty years ago. At the Andrew Jackson Hotel in New Orleans—America's most openly haunted city—the courtyard is turned into a playground by orphans who perished in a fire many years past. At the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina, author Sheila Turnage checks into room 545 and tries to solve the mystery of the "Pink Lady." In Union, South Carolina, guests at the Merridun may be joined in bed by the ghost of a little white dog. You'll be both chilled and amused by these stories, some of which are related here for the first time by the inns' owners and employees. You'll also appreciate the hard information—addresses, phone numbers, price ranges—in case you'd like to pay a visit. Sheila Turnage's Three Times LuckyMo and Dale Mystery series was a Newbery Honor winner, New York Times bestseller, Edgar Award Finalist, and E.B. White Read-Aloud Honor book. Her writing has appeared in Southern Living, Early American Homes, American Legacy, International Poetry Review, and many other publications. She lives on a farm in eastern North Carolina.

Hidden From History

Sheila Rowbotham

Pluto Press
1992
pokkari
In this classic study of women in Britain from the Puritan revolution of the mid-seventeenth century to the 1930s, Sheila Rowbotham shows how class and sex, work and the family, personal life and social pressures have shaped and hindered women’s struggles for equality. She explores the different effects that changes in the process of production have on middle-class and working-class women; why birth control and the organisation of working women have been perceived as threatening to traditional male control of the family; how paid work and work in the home are intricately related and determine the social valuation of women – and why these and many other issues have continued to arise in different form throughout modern history.
