Melville's Protest Theism

Melville's Protest Theism

Stan Goldman

Northern Illinois University Press
1993

Written over a period of almost twenty years, Clarel is Melville's last major literary work to be published before his death in 1891. Although it represents a lifetime of philosophical and theological speculation, the poem's intimidating length and complex syntax have caused Americanists and even many Melvilleans to overlook its critical role in the interpretation of Melville's thought. In this groundbreaking analysis of Melville's major poetic work, Clarel, Goldman draws on extensive biblical and textual research, as well as on his own rabbinical training, to trace the intertextual, dialogical relationship between the poem and the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Through a close examination of Clarel within biblical, theological, and narratological contexts, Goldman demonstrates how Melville's religious outlook paradoxically combines doubt and faith, despair and hope, anger and love, seriousness and scathing irony. The first book-length study of Clarel to appear in twenty years, Goldman's work sheds critical light on one of the most vexing questions in Melville studies, the extent of Melville's religious belief. Goldman demonstrates that Melville's theological reflection in Clarel represents "protest theism," that is, an attempt to find or to establish the limits within which faith is possible and existence endures and has meaning. The nonsectarian, nondogmatic faith proclaimed in Clarel, Goldman explains, protests and laments human fate yet also embraces renewed commitment to God.In reading Clarel intertextually with the Bible, Goldman moves beyond setting, character, plot, and symbol - on which most critics have focused - to illuminate both the narrative voices and the theological complexity of Clarel. His reading of the poem's mosaic of biblical quotations, allusions, and glosses demonstrates the centrality of biblical literature to Clarel and to our understanding of Melville's mature theology.
Roadside Geology of Mississippi

Roadside Geology of Mississippi

Its a little-known fact, but Mississippi has a volcano. True, its buried under 2,600 feet of sediment, but it was red hot and active roughly 79 to 69 million years ago, and evidence of its bulging remains are visible in the Jackson area. Mississippi emerged along the edge of a massive tear that formed as tectonics tried to rip the continent asunder. The full rift was never realized, but like a crack in a foundation, everything built on top of it has been affected. The failed rift became a linear basin, stretching from Illinois to the Gulf of Mexico, and for millions upon millions of years the sea rose and fell in this embayment, leaving behind tens of thousands of feet of sediment. The Mighty Mississippi River, one of states youngest and most dynamic features, follows the rifts contours today. In Roadside Geology of Mississippi geoscientists Stan Galicki and Darrel Schmitz unearth the states deeply buried stories in 63 road logs that traverse the entire state, from the Gulf Coast to the states highest point (807 feet ) in the northeast corner. A healthy dose of full-color illustrations and photos complements the authors illuminating geologic tales. With Roadside Geology of Mississippi in hand, youll understand the underpinnings of the Magnolia State as never before.

This guide is intended to show some of the much-prized rocks and minerals of the northwest. Some are valued for their beauty when cut and polished. Others are prized for the economic value of the metals they contain, such as copper in chalcopyrite, or of some physical property of the mineral itself, such as the fibrous nature of asbestos. Still other minerals are valued for their crystal form, or, simply as examples of the great diversity in the mineral kingdom.

This book analyzes and critiques media education in the university and offers tools for developing a more critical direction. Media education should not be regarded as a job-track, but as an area of inquiry that integrates theory and practice. Media literacy and especially an awareness of the myths and misconceptions that mass media perpetrate should be part of the general education for all college students. Sholle and Denski present the premises of critical pedagogical theory as a framework for re-orienting media studies programs and the discussion of the role of the media in forming important social self-images.

Journey to Spiritual Wholeness: How the map of the Exodus illustrates our own spiritual journey
Salvation is more than a ticket to heaven, more than a judicial change of status. Spiritual wholeness is a journey; it is a walk with God.When the Hebrews traveled from Egypt, through the Sinai Desert, and into Canaan to possess their inheritance, they gave us an unforgettable description of a journey unmatched in all human history. Full of adventure, warfare, romance, temptation, rebellion, and surprise, their journey from bondage to freedom is one of the greatest stories ever told. The Journey to Spiritual Wholeness, however, is not just about their journey; it is about yours Gently but firmly, Jesus himself is inviting you to come: "Follow me," he says. This book serves as a kind of traveler's aid for you on your spiritual journey. So pack your bags and get ready for an adventure like no other. Come on, let's go "I love this book."-Matt Friedeman (John M. Case Professor of Evangelical Studies, Wesley Biblical Seminary)"Warm, engaging, readable, and enlightening."-Dave Engbrecht (Senior Pastor, Nappanee Missionary Church, Indiana)"Careful, methodical, and incisive." -Jerry B. Jenkins (Bestselling Author, Left Behind series)"I enthusiastically recommend this book]."-Timothy C. Tennent (President, Asbury Theological Seminary)"You'll never look at the Exodus story through the same lens again."-Ron Mackey (Executive Director, Deerfoot Lodge)

This book is about knowing God It is about God the Holy Spirit whose primary responsibility is to help us know our God. The Father has assigned the responsibility to "...guide us into all truth..." to the "...Spirit of truth...". However, we have seen the Father's will does not operate automatically, it must be activated by faith. We have learned we obtain faith in order to be able to activate the Father's will for our lives through knowledge and understanding. This book was written to help us know and understand the Father's will concerning the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit. Once we have grown in knowledge and understanding of who the Holy Spirit is, the proper basis to relate to Him, and how to receive ministry from Him, we will be better prepared in faith and ability to know God.

Instead of being a simple fundamental by which the church lives, sin, repentance, and forgiveness have become a "...riddle..." They are currently puzzling questions, problems, or matters void of most real practical meaning to the church. We must unravel the riddle to make dealing with sin, repentance, and forgiveness fundamental to our life in Christ once again
