Exploring how concurrent programming can be assisted by language-level techniques, Introduction to Concurrency in Programming Languages presents high-level language techniques for dealing with concurrency in a general context. It provides an understanding of programming languages that offer concurrency features as part of the language definition. The book supplies a conceptual framework for different aspects of parallel algorithm design and implementation. It first addresses the limitations of traditional programming techniques and models when dealing with concurrency. The book then explores the current state of the art in concurrent programming and describes high-level language constructs for concurrency. It also discusses the historical evolution of hardware, corresponding high-level techniques that were developed, and the connection to modern systems, such as multicore and manycore processors. The remainder of the text focuses on common high-level programming techniques and their application to a range of algorithms. The authors offer case studies on genetic algorithms, fractal generation, cellular automata, game logic for solving Sudoku puzzles, pipelined algorithms, and more. Illustrating the effect of concurrency on programs written in familiar languages, this text focuses on novel language abstractions that truly bring concurrency into the language and aid analysis and compilation tools in generating efficient, correct programs. It also explains the complexity involved in taking advantage of concurrency with regard to program correctness and performance.

Terrorist use of radioactive nuclear materials is a serious threat for mass destruction or disruption of civil and military activities. Most worrisome is the use of nuclear devices to cause massive casualties to people and damage to structures. Fortunately, the procurement of adequate material and the engineering design, construction, and transportation and triggering of a nuclear weapon are all difficult problems for terrorist organizations. More likely is a device that combines radioactive materials with conventional explosives to make a radiological dispersion device, commonly called a "dirty bomb". The procurement of nuclear materials for this purpose, the construction of the bomb and its use are all easier than for a nuclear weapon. Fortunately, the effects from the use of a radiological weapon would be much smaller than from a nuclear device, although they could still be very disruptive. Thus, it is important to detect the transport of nuclear weapons and radiological dispersion devices and the materials for their construction. These materials emit gamma rays or neutrons, which can be detected to show the presence and amounts of such materials.

Sometimes faith is not enough. A decade ago, John Solomon was an enforcer for the city's most notorious crime syndicate; a brutal weapon who delivered justice for a price and carved out a reign of terror that shattered countless lives. But, his privileged life of money, drugs and women was quickly spiraling out of control and in a moment of despair he began a tortuous journey for his own redemption that led him to find solace in the church and eventually the priesthood. Into Solomon's cloistered world comes a desperate woman running in fear for her life and that of her son. The best he can offer her is sanctuary and the next day she is found murdered. Solomon launches a personal crusade for retribution that returns him to the streets he left behind and reveals an ancient evil that reaches from the back alleys to the corridors of power, consuming all in its path. Solomon must come to terms with his past and take up his guns once more in a holy war that will shake the foundations of his faith and test the very limits of his soul. The pharmaceutical applications of powder technology have long been recognized. Yet while many books focus on aspects of powder formation and behavior, there has been no text that explores the power of particulate science in the design, manufacture, and control of quality medicines. Until now. A Guide to Pharmaceutical Particulate Science discusses key principles of particulate science and their practical applications. The authors cover particulate material, its form and production, sampling from bodies of powder, particle size descriptors and statistics, behavior of particles, instrumental analysis, particle size measurement and synergy of adopted techniques, physical behavior of a powder, and in vitro and in vivo performance criteria. They draw the components of particulate science into a single concise description of their current and potential uses in product development. Exploring the growth in knowledge of particle properties and the variety of technological advances in particle manufacture, A Guide to Pharmaceutical Particulate Science gives readers the tools they need to grasp the science and its use in the industry.

Business, Organized Labour and Climate Policy examines the current lack of effective action in bridging the gap between climate change goals and governmental policies. With little published about the role of employers' organizations and trade unions in the climate change policy process, this book evaluates their involvement and argues that labour market considerations should be a central element of climate change policy. The study applies ecological modernization theory as a framework to guide policy development and negotiation. Application of the framework finds that employers' organizations and trade unions are effective civil society advocates, but responding to the labour market implications of climate change is neither institutionally embedded nor prioritized. Included are case studies of climate change policy in six developed and two developing economies, as well as within organizations such as the European Union and the UNFCCC. The emergence of labour issues in formal climate agreements demonstrates the impact that climate change is having on the broader economy and employment, and the need for business and labour to take concrete action. Providing an invaluable reference for policy development, this work will appeal to academics and students, as well as employers' organizations and trade unions. This book provides a unique perspective on key stakeholding organizations in climate change policy and presents a platform for engaging with government.

Deconstructing Health Inequity

Deconstructing Health Inequity

Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2021
sidottu
This book offers a radically different perspective on the topic of health inequity. Carey, Tai, and Griffiths use Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) to deconstruct current approaches to understanding, investigating, and addressing problems of health inequity. In the book, the authors propose that health inequity is not a problem per se. Disrupted control, they argue, is the problem that needs to be addressed. From this perspective, research, policy, and health practices directed at addressing health inequity in isolation will offer only partial solutions to the problems created by disrupted control. Addressing problems of disrupted control directly, however, has the potential to entirely resolve issues that are created by health inequity. The authors have extensive clinical and research experience in a wide range of contexts, including: cross-cultural settings; rural, remote, and underserved communities; community mental health settings; prisons; schools; and psychiatric wards. Drawing on these diverse experiences, the authors describe how adopting a Perceptual Control Theory perspective might offer promising new directions for researchers and practitioners who have an interest in addressing issues of inequity and social justice. With a Foreword written by Professor Neil Gilbert this book will provide fresh insights for academics, practitioners, and policymakers in the fields of public health, psychology, social policy, and healthcare.

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This volume presents an Empirical Model of Global Climate developed by the authors and uses that model to show that global warming will likely remain below 2ºC, relative to preindustrial, throughout this century provided: a) both the unconditional and conditional Paris INDC commitments are followed; b) the emission reductions needed to achieve the Paris INDCs are carried forward to 2060 and beyond. The first section of the book provides a short overview of Earth’s climate system, describing and contrasting climatic changes throughout the planet’s history and anthropogenic changes post-Industrial Revolution. The second section describes the climate model developed by the authors (Canty et al., Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2013) and contrasts the model with climate models used in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2013 Report. Chapter 3 examines both the unconditional (i.e., firm commitments) andconditional Paris INDCs (commitments contingent on financial flow and/or technology transfer) through the lens of their climate model and concludes that if all of the Paris INDCs are followed, then they are indeed a beacon of hope for Earth’s climate. The fourth part of the book offers a perspective of energy needs and subsequent emissions reductions required to meet the Paris temperature goals, illuminating challenges faced both in the developing world and the developed world.Throughout the book, easy-to-understand charts and graphics illustrate concepts. The scientific basis of Chapters 2 and 3 was first presented in a keynote session of the 96th Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society in January, 2016.

The Campaign Rhetoric of Paul

The Campaign Rhetoric of Paul

BLOOMSBURY PUBLISHING PLC
2026
sidottu
How should interpreters read Paul’s letters when authority and legitimacy are contested? This provocative study reframes Pauline discourse through the lens of campaign rhetoric, challenging the long-standing hermeneutic of trust and asking whether Paul’s arguments were always sincere. Drawing on historiography, metaphor theory, political science, and cognitive psychology, the authors develop a rigorous method for distinguishing authentic conviction from expedient persuasion in moments of high-stakes conflict. The analysis moves beyond abstract theory to close readings of key texts. Extended discussions of 2 Corinthians 10–13 and Galatians 1–2 explore Paul’s autobiographical claims, his portrayal of the Jerusalem apostles, and his shifting stance on the law. These passages are examined alongside rhetorical patterns such as military metaphors, selective self-presentation, and strategic appeals to revelation. By situating Paul’s letters within the cultural norms of Greco-Roman and Jewish traditions—where deception was often tolerated—the book illuminates how Pauline rhetoric may have been shaped by the pressures of competition and the logic of warfare. Combining historical-critical rigor with interdisciplinary insight, The Campaign Rhetoric of Paul offers scholars a fresh interpretive framework for reading the apostle’s letters without presuming transparency. It invites readers to grapple with the unsettling possibility that Paul’s voice, like that of many leaders in contested arenas, was sometimes less candid than tradition has assumed.
