Adapting War Horse

Adapting War Horse

Toby Malone; Christopher J. Jackman

Palgrave Macmillan
2018
nidottu
This book analyses the success and adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel War Horse to stage, radio, live events, and feature film, in different cultures, on tours, and in translation. In under a decade, War Horse has gone from obscure children’s novel to arguably one of the world’s most recognisable theatrical brands, thanks to innovative puppet designs from South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company in an acclaimed stage production from the National Theatre of Great Britain. With emphasis on embodied spectatorship, collaborative meaning-making, and imaginative ‘play,’ this book generates fresh insights into the enduring popularity of the franchise’s eponymous protagonist, Joey, offering the most in-depth study of War Horse to date.

John le Carré and the Cold War explores the historical contexts and political implications of le Carré’s major Cold-War novels. The first in-depth study of le Carré this century, this book analyses his work in light of key topics in 20th-century history, including containment of Communism, decolonization, the Berlin Wall, the Cuban missile crisis, the Cambridge spy-ring, the Vietnam War, the 70s oil crisis and Thatcherism.Examining The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1963), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1974), Smiley’s People (1979) and other novels, this book offers an illuminating picture of Cold-War Britain, while situating le Carré’s work alongside that of George Orwell, Graham Greene and Ian Fleming. Providing a valuable contribution to contemporary understandings of both British spy fiction and post-war fiction, Toby Manning challenges the critical consensus to reveal a considerably less radical writer than is conventionally presented.

Leading Educational Networks

Toby Greany; Annelies Kamp

BLOOMSBURY PUBLISHING PLC

sidottu
This book offers a global perspective on educational networks, reviewing theory and practice before setting out four lenses: educational effectiveness and improvement; governance theory; complexity theory; and Actor-Network Theory. Using these lenses, Greany and Kamp explore the limits and possibilities for collaboration by analysing case studies of networks in Aotearoa New Zealand and England as well as country-level overviews of networks in Chile and Singapore. The four lenses allow the authors to explore the implications of networks from different perspectives: moving from the level of the individual school, to the local and national systems that schools operate within, to the wider environmental factors that shape, and are shaped by, network activity in education. The authors examine why and how networks have become a feature of education systems worldwide and the implications for policy, practice and research. They consider how networks form, develop, reform, and achieve impact, but also why they can be challenging and often fail to achieve their ambitions. The book concludes by drawing out the implications for leaders and the further development of leadership at different levels of education systems, and by identifying further avenues for research.

In 1945, W. Averell Harriman, US Ambassador to the Soviet Union, was presented with a carved wooden plaque of the Great Seal of the United States as a 'gesture of friendship' by a delegation from the Young Pioneer Organization of the Soviet Union. Unbeknownst to him, one of the first covert listening devices - the 'Great Seal Bug' as it came to be known - was secreted within it and was subsequently used to listen in on his conversations for the next six years. This book uses remarkable tales like this to tell the story of the development of modern audio surveillance and the way in which it has influenced the development of today's artificial intelligence.Beginning with the tale of the Great Seal Bug and speculating forward, the book traces an arc through to the present day in which Pegasus spyware can record our calls, copy messages and secretly film us, before moving into a near future in which AIs can listen to things we have not yet said. Exploring how mass forms of audio intelligence now inform artificial intelligence through speakers and appliances brought into the home, it examines technologies such as mobile phones, children’s toys and even IoT baby monitors to show that the urge to listen to everything that has ever been uttered is scored deeply into the technological operating system of Western culture.

The Making of England

The Making of England

Toby Purser

AMBERLEY PUBLISHING

The Making of England places the history of early England firmly within the European sphere of influence. It draws upon the latest multi-disciplinary research and debates from science, archaeology, literature and documentary evidence, with an eye on contemporary concerns and perceptions of English history. Toby Purser demonstrates the impact of the continuous continental interaction across the period c. 410 to 1534 in the shaping of England, from the early pan-Germanic to the Scandinavian, Norman-French, Angevin and Gascon. Crucially, there was no inevitability in the emergence of a single, unified state in the Anglo-Saxon period and after 1066 the English state was bound to continental possessions by trade or war. Baronial rebellion, not popular demand, led to the devolution of powers from the Crown via Magna Carta and parliament, but this was not part of a manifest destiny - of ‘exceptional’ English freedom. Literacy and learning was exclusively Christian, to the detriment of pagan cultures and achievements, and thus the first historians wrote only from a singular perspective, that of the Christian supremacy. English culture was subsumed into the new Norman hegemony, along with attempts to rewrite or obliterate Welsh, Scottish and Irish history. This book will make you think again about what it means to be English.

Leverage the power of Talent Intelligence (TI) to make evidence-informed decisions that drive business performance by using data about people, skills, jobs, business functions and geographies. Improved access to people and business data has created huge opportunities for the HR function. However, simply having access to this data is not enough. HR professionals need to know how to analyse the data, know what questions to ask of it and where and how the insights from the data can add the most value. Talent Intelligence is a practical guide that explains everything HR professionals need to know to achieve this. It outlines what Talent Intelligence (TI) is why it's important, how to use it to improve business results and includes guidance on how HR professionals can build the business case for it. This book also explains how and why talent intelligence is different from workforce planning, sourcing research and standard predictive HR analytics and shows how to assess where in the organization talent intelligence can have the biggest impact and how to demonstrate the results to all stakeholders. Most importantly, this book covers KPIs and metrics for success, short-term and long-term TI goals, an outline of what success looks like and the skills needed for effective Talent Intelligence. It also features case studies from organizations including Philips, Barclays and Kimberly-Clark.
