A collection of key papers given at three international conferences in Britain, the United States and Canada on race relations and multiculturalism are drawn together in this book. The first section includes three papers on the state of theory in race relations; the second contains papers on educational themes, examining in particular the pitfalls in multicultural education. It also looks at the development and problems of second language education for minority groups in several countries. The final section focuses on special topics including the adjustment and identity of children of mixed race marriages; the plight of children from Canada’s native communities; and the hearing impaired as a minority group.

Many schools in developed countries have children and adolescents from a variety of ethnic, linguistic, religious and cultural backgrounds. They relate to each other in various degrees of encounter that range from harmony to hostility. The issue of how a school can foster inter-ethnic relationships and challenge the manifestations of bad relationships cannot of course be divorced from tensions and inequalities in the wider society. This book focuses on ways in which schools might make a difference to the quality of such relationships within their walls. It has sought to do this by studying nine secondary schools in some depth: their organisation, structures and interactive processes: and the experiences, attitudes and behaviour of students and their teachers. The research on which the book is based has also yielded data on the influence of policy and procedure in schools on relationships.

Narrative Podcasting in an Age of Obsession

It has been a decade since Serial brought the narrative podcast to the center of popular culture. In that time, there has been an enormous boom in the production of podcasts that tell stories, particularly in the fields of true crime, storytelling, history, and narrative fiction. Now that the initial glow around the medium has begun to fade, it is time to reevaluate the medium’s technological, political, economic, and cultural rise, in particular what types of storytelling accompanied that rise. Narrative Podcasting in an Age of Obsession is the first book to look back on this prodigious body of material and attempt to make sense of it from a structural, historical, and analytical point of view. Focusing on more than 350 podcasts and other audio works released between Serial and the COVID pandemic, the book explores why so many of these podcasts seem “obsessed with obsession,” why they focus not only on informing listeners but also dramatizing the labor that goes into it, and why fiction podcasts work so hard to prove they are a brand new form, even as they revive features of radio from decades gone by. This work also examines the industry's reckoning with its own implication in systemic racism, misogyny, and other forms of discrimination. Employing innovative new critical techniques for close listening—including pitch tracking software and spectrograms—Narrative Podcasting in an Age of Obsession makes a major contribution to podcast studies and media studies more broadly.

Contemporary IT Service Delivery in Enterprise: Handbook for Service Delivery Manager

Service Integration

With radical change in the technology landscape in every enterprise, the inherent IT services embedded in anything and everything that happens in the business, a rapid shift is required to manage and deliver IT services. While legacy systems continue to function and need to be managed by traditional methods, a forward thinking approach is required to manage delivery of services for emerging technologies. This handbook is targeted at service delivery managers in the "service provider" organization but would also be very useful to internal service managers, provided they think of enterprise IT service consumers as customers. It would also greatly benefit IT generalists who may not be directly managing the delivery of services but contributing to or want to understand the subject.

eCommerce is evolving, and it's making building a profitable eCommerce business harder than ever. What worked 5 years ago is now a dead end. Digital marketing today is lazy. It prioritizes paid users even though every entrepreneur knows organic users represent a much higher lifetime value. But attracting paid users is so much faster and easier, entrepreneurs are blinded by the FOMO of short-term crutches like discounting to boost sales at any cost. That cost is often non-existent retention rates which bleeds your profits and only creates more desperation for quick conversions. Most retailers end up trying to compete on price, a game you're always going to lose, and get trapped trading their time for money, the same rat race most entrepreneurs started their own business to escape. There is a way to stop micromanaging your business and focus on scaling it: you need a brand.Consumers always buy for the same reasons, whether online or offline, but eCommerce has profoundly changed buying behavior and the typical buyer's journey. In the early days of eCommerce, having a good SEO strategy and attractive website design was enough to generate sales, so brand development was largely seen as an unnecessary expense. With the economic disruption from social distancing, more demographics are shifting to online shopping, and it's accelerating eCommerce's evolution exponentially. Consumers expect a seamless experience that reflects their values and offers more than a transaction. To achieve this, what you need today is an approach that marries the customer insights and the strategic direction of branding with the tools of eCommerce. After every category has been disrupted and saturated with DTC offers, building a strong brand is quickly becoming the only way to differentiate your business amongst competitors. You need the 7C's.In Checkout: The eCommerce Branding Book, Neil Verma, a former corporate brand executive and eCommerce entrepreneur, introduces the 7C Method, an end-to-end brand strategy designed specifically for eCommerce. The result of an exhaustive study of the top 100 eCommerce brands blended with blue-chip brand secrets, it's the only branding book of its kind. And the 7C's aren't another growth hack: this is a holistic brand strategy that eliminates guesswork, optimizes resources, and gives you back your time.

A historical thriller, a gripping tale that you will not put aside until it is finished. Scotland, 1306 - after slaying his lifelong rival to the throne in a chapel, Robert the Bruce is crowned king of Scotland at Scone. Yet even his own wife and countrymen laugh at his foolishness, calling him Mad King Robin. For the murder of the Bruce's rival in a chapel has enraged the English king in London, who views himself as Scotland's rightful ruler. An English army is sent north and through an act of deception, the Bruce's forces are destroyed at Methven. After the Bruce's narrow escape, his wife, daughter and sisters are captured by the English. The Bruce suddenly finds himself an excommunicated outlaw within his own realm, fleeing both his English and Scottish enemies with a mere handful of loyal men. For eight years since Methven, the Bruce's wife Elizabeth de Burgh, daughter of the most powerful man in Ireland, has hated every day of her captivity by the English. The walls of Rochester castle are a seemingly eternal prison, while rumour and gossip reaches her that the Bruce is out of hiding, and incredibly reclaiming castle after castle in Scotland. Yet word has also reached her that the English king is marching north, at the head of the largest English army ever assembled. All Elizabeth can do is cling to mad hopes of freedom, while her captors urge her to abandon her fealty to her husband. Yet 1314 is indeed the year when the Bruce, long emerged from hiding, has crushed his enemies and taken every castle in Scotland except Stirling. His rise, inspired by a mere spider, is scarcely believable. But even the Bruce privately fears the incredibly large English force marching north to crush him, which is more than twice the size of his own army. It will take all of the Bruce's ingenuity and insane bravery to attempt to end the English hold on Scotland once and for all. The last fight for his people's future beckons along the Bannockburn, but can the Bruce's army overcome impossible odds to win freedom? Mad King Robin is a wonderful, riveting page turner, which tells the stirring tale of a nation's desperate struggle against a much larger, brutal oppressor.
