Rural Community Water Supply

Rural Community Water Supply

Richard C Carter

PRACTICAL ACTION PUBLISHING

The first Water Decade aimed to serve everyone with safe drinking water by 1990. More than three decades later, the task is far from finished; it is now abundantly clear that it will take more time - in some countries much more time - than the 15 years of the Sustainable Development Goals. Despite the United Nations declaration that no-one would be left behind, without step-changes in commitment, know-how, and resources, many rural households will still be struggling for their daily water supply in 2030 and beyond. In this book, Richard Carter weaves together the myriad of factors that need to come together to make rural water supply truly available to everyone. Sustainable water supply for all requires sound stewardship of water resources, good quality physical infrastructure, and management and financing arrangements that are equally fit-for-purpose. In many countries, systemic change is needed. Ultimately, radical changes to the global web of injustice that divides this world into rich and poor may be the only way to address the underlying problems.

The sacrificial death of Jesus Christ is the most important and cherished event in human history. Still, the accurate cause of how Jesus died remains a mystery to this day. Dr. Gary Hassmann relies on his years of experience as a physician and surgeon to utilize his findings gathered from three decades of extensive scriptural studies, medical research, and pilgrimages to the Holy Land and Rome to unravel and solve the mystery of how Jesus died. By shining a fresh light on the prophetic scriptures, the transcendence of blood and water, the effects of the Christ event such as redemption and reconciliation, and a new perspective collected from the twenty-first century medical sciences, Dr. Hassmann invites others to contemplate a fascinating theory about Christs death and ultimately glean more robust spiritual truths about Gods meaning and prophetic messages. Blood and Water presents original research of the sacred scriptures and the modern medical sciences that faithfully and thoughtfully deciphers and solves the mystery of how Jesus died.
Developing the Circular Water Economy

Developing the Circular Water Economy

Robert C. Brears

This book presents new research on policy innovations that promote the development of the circular water economy. In contrast to the linear economy, the circular water economy promotes the reduction of water consumption, reuse of water, and recovery of resources from wastewater to not only increase resilience to climate change but also to reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the provision of water and wastewater-related services. Providing a series of in-depth case studies of important locations in differing climates around the globe that have implemented a variety of policy innovations to develop the circular water economy, this book is a valuable resource for water and resource conservation managers, policymakers, international companies and organisations interested in the circular economy, environmental NGOs, researchers, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. · Systematically reviews policy innovations to develop the circularwater economy· Illustrates how leading locations from around the world have developed the circular water economy to increase resilience to climate change while reducing emissions · Provides ‘best practices’ for other locations around the world aiming to implement the circular water economy

While creativity plays an important role in the advancement of computer science, great ideas are built on a foundation of practical experience and knowledge. This book presents programming techniques which will be useful in both AI projects and more conventional software engineering endeavors. My primary goal is to enter tain, to introduce new technologies and to provide reusable software modules for the computer programmer who enjoys using programs as models for solutions to hard and interesting problems. If this book succeeds in entertaining, then it will certainly also educate. I selected the example application areas covered here for their difficulty and have provided both program examples for specific applications and (I hope) the method ology and spirit required to master problems for which there is no obvious solution. I developed the example programs on a Macintosh ™ using the Macintosh Common LISP ™ development system capturing screen images while the example programs were executing. To ensure portability to all Common LISP environments, I have provided a portable graphics library in Chapter 2. All programs in this book are copyrighted by Mark Watson. They can be freely used in any free or commercial software systems if the following notice appears in the fine print of the program's documentation: "This program contains software written by Mark Watson." No royalties are required. The program miniatures contained in this book may not be distributed by posting in source code form on public information networks, or in printed form without my written permission.
Sustainable Water Quality Management Policy
After the success of the Acid Rain Program, pollution trading became a more acceptable policy in dealing with pollution problems. Trading of pollution credits and allowances helps to achieve environmental goals faster and more co- effectively. Although for the past 20 years water pollution trading had been in effect for as long as air pollution trading, many water quality trading programs – as compared to air pollution trading programs – lack success in the implementation of trading. The motivation factor for my work came from an interest in learning and understanding what the differences were that culminated in different levels of success being achieved between water pollution trading programs and air pollution trading programs. Moreover, another incentive was not only to understand what the role of trading should be for managing water quality, but also how to better improve the water quality trading programs in order to become successful. This book focuses on the examination of problems existing within a mark- based system for water pollution control policy in the United States, and provides essential information for introducing market-based instruments for water quality management, presents general situations where trading may or may not work, and offers a recommendation for those interested in developing new water trading programs as a suitable option for solving localized water pollution, for ?ne-tuning the system after implementation, and for overcoming trading obstacles. The book is divided into 5 chapters.
Fine Sediment In Open Water: From Fundamentals To Modeling

Fine Sediment In Open Water: From Fundamentals To Modeling

Fine Sediment in Open Water is mainly written for professional engineers working in estuaries and coastal systems. It provides the basis for a fundamental understanding of the physical, biological and chemical processes governing the transport and fate of fine sediment in open water and explains how this understanding can steer engineering studies with numerical models. This is a unique treatment of processes at a variety of spatial and temporal scales, from the micro-scale (colloid scale) to system-wide scales, and from intra-tidal time periods to decades.Beginning with the processes governing the transport and fate of fine sediment in shallow open water, the first eight chapters are dedicated to the hydrodynamic, soil mechanics and biological processes which determine fine sediment concentrations in the water column, in/on the bed and the exchange of sediment between bed and water column. The next two chapters treat the net fluxes of fine sediment as a function of asymmetries in forcing and sediment properties. These fundamental processes form the basis for the subsequent chapters on modeling in which the governing equations are presented, and tools are provided to aggregate and parameterize the various processes elaborated in the first eight chapters. Further, any numerical model study should be based on a conceptual model, as illustrated in the final five chapters, which provide examples of numerical modeling studies on the transport and fate of fine sediment in a coastal sea, an estuary, a tidal river, a lake, and around and within a harbor basin.Related Link(s)
Drinking Water: Principles And Practices

Drinking Water: Principles And Practices

This unique volume provides a comprehensive overview of all the major aspects of modern drinking water systems in the western European context. It not only covers the theoretical principles, but also the historical background and practical aspects of design and operation, legislation, planning and finance of drinking water supply in its social and economic context. The principles and practices are illustrated using experiences from The Netherlands. The Dutch drinking water supply is well known for its multiple barrier systems and high technical standards. The Dutch drinking water is of high quality and does not contain chlorine, and the Dutch therefore readily drink tap water and do not see the need to buy bottled water or in-house filters, with their drawbacks on national economics, public health and the environment. This illustrative overview can be used as a reference for other countries and regions.
