The History of Tumwater Washington Coloring Book

It began with thirty-one adventurous people looking for a new life out west. They packed up their belongings and struck off across the Oregon Trail, over two-thousand miles of dust, torrential rains, mud, floods, howling winds, and unforgiving sun. When they couldn't find what they wanted in the Willamette Valley, they headed north into British-held territory, and found a new home at the foot of a beautiful waterfall. The Deschutes River, near the southern tip of the Puget Sound, had everything they desired. The virgin forest rose high above them. The Native tribes were friendly. The river provided power for their mills. They called their new home "New Market," (later to be named Tumwater) and thus began the History of Tumwater, Washington. This is more than a coloring book. This is a history lesson for young and old alike, a look at the incredible efforts that went into the formation of a town. It is the story of Tumwater, but it could easily be the story of a thousand other cities across the United States. William D. Holland, former history teacher and current novelist, takes a look at the fascinating history of Tumwater, the first settlement in the State of Washington. It is, quite frankly, a story of America. The History of Tumwater Washington is now a coloring book. Read along and learn Color along and have fun

This study probes the American religious press between 1943 and 1945 to determine what was reported about Nazi death camps. Catholic and Protestant periodicals between 1945 and 1949 are also examined to evaluate the impact that the Holocaust had on the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine. - How much did American Catholics and Protestants know about Nazi persecution of Jews? - When did the American Christian press begin to report on the existence of death camps? - If Protestant and Catholic periodicals described the killing of Jews by the Nazis, was any pressure put on the United States government to stop the murders? (bomb rail lines leading to Auschwitz) - Did the religious press portray problems of survivors of the Holocaust? - Did the press carry any editorials or articles in support of a Jewish homeland in Palestine for Holocaust refugees? William Camp earned a Doctor of Arts degree from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Dr. Camp served as Vice President and Provost of Luzerne County Community College in Pennsylvania before returning to a position as professor of History and Sociology. After receiving a summer Fulbright Scholarship to the Netherlands, he led college students on tours of historical sites in Western Europe on numerous occasions. Local Government in Action is a simulation about a fictional, medium-sized municipality called Summerville. It provides an interactive teaching tool with a focus on governance and community development in small and medium-sized municipalities in Canada. It also examines the major issues faced by resource-based communities and communities on the peripheries of metropolitan areas. Participants in the simulation play the roles of municipal politicians, administrators, and community members in order to respond to a series of issues and challenges that confront Summerville. The simulation provides participants with a sense of what real decision-making is like by requiring them to deal with competing interests, conflicting points of view, and the occasional clash between "common sense solutions" and the actions that are permissible under law. It also demonstrates the processes involved in council meetings, the roles played by municipal staff, and the nature of the relationship between elected officials, appointed officials, and the public. Additionally, this exercise offers participants the opportunity to practice the skills required to make effective presentations, to participate in public meetings, and to lobby. The text is accompanied by an instructor's manual on CD-Rom that mirrors the content of the workbook and provides goals and ideas for making the simulation more successful in terms of pedagogy.

Aristocratic Redoubt: The Austro-Hungarian Foreign Office on the Eve of the First World War is a study of the nobility who served in the foreign office prior to World War I. Following the lead of historians who are reexamining pre-industrial elites in England and Germany, Godsey deals with such facets of aristocratic life as education, wealth, religion, and ethnicity. He contends that although the pre-war aristocracy has been stereotyped as frivolous and decadent, the Austro-Hungarian nobility, and thus the monarchy, in fact had great staying power. This work is a social history of the bureaucracy of the Ballhausplatz primarily in the decade leading up to 1914, though it provides a thorough overview of the service during the entire Dualist period.

How Much Are You Making on the War, Daddy?

Columnist Paul Krugman has described Bush's melding of political hardball and economic favoritism as "crony capitalism," while Senator John McCain calls it war profiteering. George W. Bush's approach to military spending is a higher-priced version of what went on under the Suharto regime in Indonesia, when corporations connected to the military and the president's inner circle had the inside track on lucrative government contracts. The military budget has increased from $300 billion to more than $400 billion annually since George W. Bush took office. The Iraq invasion and occupation will cost at least another $200 billion over the next three to five years. U. S. policy is now based on what's good for Chevron, Halliburton, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Bechtel, not what's good for the average citizen. Dick Cheney's ties to conglomerate Halliburton are the tip of the iceberg since at least thirty-two top officials in the Bush administration served as executives or paid consultants to top weapons contractors before joining the administration. In George W. Bush's Washington, it has reached the point where you can't tell the generals from the arms lobbyists without a scorecard. This book provides that scorecard, in a style designed to provoke action for change.

People fell beside me and people were blown apart beside me. Anywhere I went as a prisoner, I tried to be aware of the situation and use it the best I could to survive." This fascinating and arresting true story features excerpts from Bill Miner's personal prison diary, which he kept despite the accompanying risk of torture or even death, along with photos and post-war recollections.

Because we are blessed with a worldwide community of faith, we easily forget that today's Church was built person by person, congregation by congregation, beginning with Christ's ascension. In this collection of sermons on the book of Acts, William Shiell examines the disciples' efforts as they learned to share the gospel and foster character formation and fellowship. With characteristic insight, Shiell reveals how the resurrection of Jesus and the power of the Spirit disrupted cities across the Mediterranean-and how this message and Power are still capable of "turning the world upside down." Finally, Shiell outlines ways the gospel challenges us as it crosses boundaries and changes lives, revealing our inherited calling to build a church for every people and every generation. Each volume of the Preaching the Word series consists of a collection of sermons preached through a book or books of the Bible. As in other commentaries, the author analyzes and seeks to interpret each passage. But Preaching the Word also exists as a testament to the Word preached, a homiletical commentary unfolding within a community of faith. Thus, this series allows us to approach the letters and histories of the New Testament as the first recipients did: as hearers of God's Word.
Death of a Rat

Death of a Rat

William D. Stansfield

Is science amoral? Are scientists ethical? Why is the pathway to solving important scientific problems commonly so tortuous? Can unorthodox ideas get a fair trial from the scientific establishment? How do religion and politics influence science education today? What role does serendipity play in science? What are some of the obstacles to scientific progress? How do great ideas originate? Are the people who make scientific discoveries always given the full credit they deserve? Does science history repeat itself? To what extent does fraud occur in science and why would researchers engage in it? Questions like these are not commonly raised let alone discussed in high school or college classrooms. Yet gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of science by attempting to confront these vital concerns might go a long way toward reducing popular misperceptions about science while improving science literacy among the general public, a challenge issued to all scientists by leading educators. Geneticist and science historian William D Stansfield presents a popular overview of the major ethical and philosophical issues confronting science today. From concern about the welfare of experimental animals to a consideration of the many kinds of impediments that slow the progress of science - religious, moral, political, and conceptual - each chapter conveys an appreciation for the work that scientists do and the obstacles that stand in their way. Stansfield considers such intriguing issues as human experimentation, fetal-cell research, animal rights, cold fusion, the influence of religion and politics on science, the role that accidental discoveries play in science, and the crucial role of honesty versus fraud in scientific research. Debunking the popular stereotype of science as a dry, antiseptic exercise, Stansfield compellingly describes the fascinating, very human struggle for truth that makes science the most important enterprise of our time.

U.S. Forest Service Grazing and Rangelands

U.S. Forest Service Grazing and Rangelands

The early luxury of free forage on unclaimed western public domain allowed the building of fortunes in cattle and sheep and offered opportunities to successive waves of settlement. But the western public lands could not last. The range became overgrazed, overstocked, overcrowded. Animals were lost, much range was irreversible damaged, and even violence occurred as cowmen, sheepmen, and settlers competed for the best forage. Congress intervened by designating the U.S. Forest Service as the pioneer grazing control agency. The Forest Service's controls represent not only attempts to protect a resource but also a social experiment designed to prevent the monopolization of rangelands by large outfits and to encourage small enterprises. The Forest Service has become the undisputed leader in bringing order, rationality, and economic use to the range resources under government supervision. The problems and continuing challenges of the task emerge in these pages.

The campaign of 1896 gave the public one of the most dramatic and interesting battles of political oratory in American history, even though, ironically, its issues faded quickly into insignificance after the election. In what is often thought of as a single-issue campaign, William Jennings Bryan delivered his famous ""Cross of Gold"" speech but lost the election. Meanwhile, William McKinley addressed a range of topics in more than three hundred speeches - without ever leaving his front porch. William D. Harpine traces the campaign month-by-month to show the development of Bryan's rhetoric and the stability of McKinley's. Beyond adding depth and detail to the scholarly understanding of the 1896 presidential campaign itself, this book casts light on the importance of historical perspective in understanding rhetorical efforts in politics.
