When Callie Drakos swears to the gods she'll never fall in love, she doesn't expect that one of them would hear it, or care. How was she supposed to know the warnings her parents had given her while growing up weren't just stories? When the goddess Aphrodite takes it upon herself to prove Callie wrong, and blackmails a stranger into helping Callie break her vow, she just might regret not listening to her parents after all. Aidan McRae is minding his own business when he suddenly ends up with a smoothie to the face, and an unconscious girl on the sidewalk next to him. He goes to the hospital with her, where Aphrodite appears and tells him that he's going to pretend to be the stranger's boyfriend, and make her fall in love with him in just a few weeks- or else. He's skeptical at first, but when he realizes that he doesn't have much of a choice he reluctantly agrees to play the part. Will Callie let her guard down for Aidan, a man who she doesn't know but makes her crave something no one ever has? Will Aidan give in to his conscience and tell Callie the truth, risking everything? Who will pay the price for the lover's vow?

A beloved American corporation with an explosive secret. A disgraced former journalist looking for redemption. And a corporate executive with nothing left to lose.In Dhaka, Bangladesh, a garment factory burns to the ground, claiming the lives of hundreds of workers, mostly young women. Amid the rubble, a bystander captures a heart-stopping photograph--a teenage girl lying in the dirt, her body broken by a multi-story fall, and over her mouth a mask of fabric bearing the label of one of America's largest retailers, Presto Omnishops Corporation.Eight thousand miles away at Presto's headquarters in Virginia, Cameron Alexander, the company's long-time general counsel, watches the media coverage in horror, wondering if the damage can be contained. When the photo goes viral, fanning the flames of a decades-old controversy about sweatshops, labor rights, and the ethics of globalization, he launches an investigation into the disaster that will reach further than he could ever imagine--and threaten everything he has left in the world.A year later in Washington DC, Joshua Griswold, a disgraced former journalist from the Washington Post, receives an anonymous summons from a corporate whistleblower who offers him confidential information about Presto and the fi re. For Griswold, the challenge of exposing Presto's culpability is irresistible, as is the chance, however slight, at redemption. Deploying his old journalistic skills, he builds a historic case against Presto, setting the stage for a war in the courtroom and in the media that Griswold is determined to win--both to salvage his reputation and to provoke a revolution in Presto's boardroom that could transform the fashion industry across the globe.Praise for Harvest of Thorns: "This expos of the underbelly of the international fashion industry is disturbing, moving, and thoroughly engrossing." --Phillip Margolin, New York Times bestselling author of Violent Crimes"A must-read book which uncovers what lies behind what we wear every single day. The Witness for the Dead: Book One of the Cemeteries of Amalo Trilogy
"This trilogy is as close to perfect as books can get. . . . Magnificent."--T. Kingfisher, author of What Moves the Dead Katherine Addison returns to the glittering world she created for her beloved novel, The Goblin Emperor, with book one of the Cemeteries of Amalo trilogyLocus Award Finalist and Mythopoeic Award Finalist When the young half-goblin emperor Maia sought to learn who had set the bombs that killed his father and half-brothers, he turned to an obscure resident of his father's Court, a Prelate of Ulis and a Witness for the Dead. Thara Celehar found the truth, though it did him no good to discover it. He lost his place as a retainer of his cousin the former Empress, and made far too many enemies among the many factions vying for power in the new Court. The favor of the Emperor is a dangerous coin. Now Celehar lives in the city of Amalo, far from the Court though not exactly in exile. He has not escaped from politics, but his position gives him the ability to serve the common people of the city, which is his preference. He lives modestly, but his decency and fundamental honesty will not permit him to live quietly. As a Witness for the Dead, he can, sometimes, speak to the recently dead: see the last thing they saw, know the last thought they had, experience the last thing they felt. It is his duty use that ability to resolve disputes, to ascertain the intent of the dead, to find the killers of the murdered. Celehar's skills now lead him out of the quiet and into a morass of treachery, murder, and injustice. No matter his own background with the imperial house, Celehar will stand with the commoners, and possibly find a light in the darkness. Katherine Addison has created a fantastic world for these books - wide and deep and true. Drawing on the diary Margaret Addison kept while travelling in Europe, Jean O'Grady makes available the experiences of the woman who would become the first dean of Annesley Hall at Victoria College. Addison spent most of 1900 travelling through Europe and Britain. Her reactions to various exhibitions and museums in London and Paris are vividly recorded, as are her experiences with British and European society. She describes her encounters with "old world" culture and history and reflects on its meaning for Canada. Her trip ended with visits to the local women's colleges in Oxford and Cambridge, visits that were important to her understanding of how the British experience could be adapted to benefit the women who would live in Annesley Hall, for which Victoria College was then raising funds. This never-before published diary, edited and annotated by Jean O'Grady, offers a remarkable insight into the cultural milieu of the women who shaped higher education in Canada. It will be invaluable for anyone interested in Canadian culture and the history of education, and offers an ideal of "womanliness" that is of interest to feminist theorists.
Chiefs of the Plantation

South African agriculture is characterized by growing labour unrest, evinced in recent years by high-profile strikes, but little is known about the sources and forms of day-to-day struggle. In Chiefs of the Plantation Lincoln Addison examines how labour conflict is fuelled by changing management practices and how workers respond and resist across spatial, sexual, and spiritual domains. Depicting, in rich ethnographic detail, daily life on a plantation, Addison describes how agriculture has been restructured in the post-apartheid era through a delegation of authority from white landowners to black intermediaries. He explains that while this labour regime enables the profitability of plantations, it gives rise to a fragile moral economy in which perceptions of what is tolerable and what is exploitation frequently clash. In this environment, transactional sex and Christian worship emerge as important terrains of gendered and spiritual contestation where women and low-ranking workers remain resilient in the face of unequal power relations. Meanwhile, plantations project an appearance of benevolent paternalism, particularly in the narratives and self-identity of white landowners. This book reveals how, in the everyday life of the community, both the plantation and the compound where the workers live serve as central grounds for the negotiation of labour relations. A groundbreaking study that uncovers how migrant plantation workers challenge their exploitation, Chiefs of the Plantation is a rare glimpse into the often hidden world of labour struggle on contemporary plantations.
