Discover new approaches for extending children's library services beyond the library building and learn how to utilize technology to bring learning to children wherever they may be.The ways in which we communicate, learn, and interact have changed drastically in the last decade, and this worldwide revolution applies to the youngest members of society as well. Today's books and learning materials are being presented and used in new and different ways. From the toddler's first boardbooks to the young teen's conversations on Facebook, children are interacting with print and media rather than passively listening or viewing. Libraries can contribute to this interactive world by inviting children to take an active role in their library collection and library service experiences. This book examines the impact of new technologies on children's experiences of books and libraries, and demonstrates how librarians can adapt to new technologies and integrate library services into the lives of today's children. From Boardbook to Facebook: Children's Services in an Interactive Age draws on current research to illuminate how children's use of media has changed in recent years and suggests ways in which new technologies can be integrated into library services now and in the future.
What She Takes Away

What She Takes Away

Adele Annesi

Bordighera Press

pokkari
The weaver's shuttle turns at the death of Gia Falcini's mother, when Gia's estranged father in Italy sends a scarf whose unusual qualities could revive Gia's ailing fabric shop in Boston's North End. Goaded by conflicting desires, Gia journeys to her father's village and the stepfamily she has never met, a vibrant local fabric mill, and Italy's style capital. The adventure could shred Gia's ambitions or offer a legacy worth taking away."Ah, family-infuriating, beloved, and infinitely complex. Adele Annesi's debut novel beautifully captures the essence of a fascinating family, one that has been doubly split by divorce and geography. The story focuses on a father living in Italy and the daughter he left behind in the States. Much of the novel is set in and around the Italian town of Castel Barberini where Gia, the abandoned daughter, embarks on a quest for self-definition, professional fulfillment, and familial and romantic love."--Hollis Seamon, author of Somebody Up There Hates You"Adele Annesi may write with supreme authority about the world of high-end garment design, but even more impressive is her ability to delicately weave the complex patterns of her characters' lives. What She Takes Away is like a dress made from the finest material, hand-sewn with love and tailored to perfection."--Chris Belden, author of Shriver"In her much anticipated debut novel, What She Takes Away, Adele Annesi takes us to Fashion Week in Milan and deep into the thoroughly imagined interior lives of Gia Falcini and her estranged father, Giovanni. This is an outstanding piece of work and a more than promising start to what one hopes will be a long literary career."--Pete Nelson, author of I Thought You Were Dead"The vicissitudes of family love and strife are richly explored in What She Takes Away amidst the timeless Italian countryside. Annesi's attention to detail and examination of the textile industry provide a fascinating backdrop for this universal story."--Liz Matthews, Program Director, Westport Writers' Workshop"A cleverly written story that weaves the threads of an estranged father and daughter against a colorful Italian background. The writing is wonderful."--Blake Schnirring, Executive Director, Westport Writers' WorkshopFiction. Italian Studies.

The English Renaissance and the Far East

The English Renaissance and the Far East

Adele Lee

Fairleigh Dickinson University Press
2017

The English Renaissance and the Far East: Cross-Cultural Encounters is an original and timely examination of cultural encounters between Britain, China, and Japan. It challenges accepted, Anglocentric models of East-West relations and offers a radical reconceptualization of the English Renaissance, suggesting it was not so different from current developments in an increasingly Sinocentric world, and that as China, in particular, returns to a global center-stage that it last occupied pre-1800, a curious and overlooked synergy exists between the early modern and the present. Prompted by the current eastward tilt in global power, in particular towards China, Adele Lee examines cultural interactions between Britain and the Far East in both the early modern and postmodern periods. She explores how key encounters with and representations of the Far East are described in early modern writing, and demonstrates how work of that period, particularly Shakespeare, has a special power today to facilitate encounters between Britain and East Asia. Readers will find the past illuminating the present and vice versa in a book that has at its heart resonances between Renaissance and present-day cultural exchanges, and which takes a cyclical, “long-view” of history to offer a new, innovative approach to a subject of contemporary importance.

American Sociology and Holocaust Studies

American Sociology and Holocaust Studies

Academic Studies Press

Filled with new elements that challenge common scholarly theses, this book acquaints the reader with the “Jewish problem” of Sociology and provides what this academic discipline urgently needs: a one-volume history of ‘the Sociology of the Holocaust’. The story of why and how the sociologists as well as the school of sociological thoughts came to confront the event has never been entirely told. However, the focus is on the “alleged delay of Sociology” in the comprehension of the Jewish genocide. Did this delay really exist? To this and other arising questions, this book tries to answer: the delay could be an half truth. The volume offers original insights on the nature of American Sociology with implications for the post-Holocaust Sociology development.
