FOREWORDIn 1944 the author of this essay published his volume "Who Is This King of Glory?" It stood as perhaps the most forthright and uncompromising critique of the fundamental tenets of Christianity that has been put forth up to that time, or even to the present. It assembled and correlated a vast body of documentary and factual data which, if it could not be successfully confuted, rendered the verdict of the non-historicity of the Gospel narrative and its central figure, Jesus of Nazareth, final and no longer controversial. Its thousands of readers are almost unanimous in the conviction that it closed the case beyond debate and on the negative side. In the wide sweep of its searching survey, all that hitherto had, in the general mind of religionists, been assumed to stand as solid historical substantiation of the physical life and exalted preaching of the Nazarene personage disappeared completely from view; or at any rate was seen as incompetent to testify in the category of historical evidence. While on the other side, the more minute the examination of the data adduced, the higher the mountain of evidence piled up in disproof. In fact, when the question was canvassed with the lens of a discerning knowledge of ancient esoteric practice and schematism in the inditing of religious literature, it was found that there was virtually no evidence that could be accredited as factually historical in support of the existence of Jesus. And just as surprisingly it was seen that all the evidence that could rate as historically authentic was marshalled on the contra side. In fine, all the evidence bore heavily against the thesis, and what had been assumed to be evidence for it vanished into the mists of allegory. This astounding determination of course found little acceptability in orthodox religious ranks. It seemed incredible that all Christian scholarship, all theological erudition, over some eighteen centuries could have been either unconscionably blind or hopelessly stupid, or consciously knavish, that it could either have totally missed the discovery of this glaring error, or could have successfully conspired to suppress the truth and permit the Christian system of beliefs based on the life of this dramatic character dominate the mind of the most progressive half of present humanity for nearly two millennia. There is no question but that this complication in what is undoubtedly the most significant and fateful item in the field of religious hypnotization in the Western segment of humanity is both supremely incredible and totally incomprehensible to the general mind. That one scholar, working almost alone and in obscurity, should now establish beyond dispute (though it will be disputed) what the learned gentry of the world had missed for so many centuries, is likewise a prediction that will not find credence anywhere. This observation, however, need not appear so exceptional a phenomenon, since the discoverer is ever the one who singly has come upon some secret, some great truth, that all the world has missed. It is the presupposition in all discovery. The debate is one that could hold the fate of our world in the balance. It would be difficult to adduce a general theosophical concept more fateful for the world (or the Occidental half of it) than the idea that man must discount his own powers, indeed surrender them abjectly, and look for his salvation to a power exterior to his own proper endowment, and not integral with that endowment, in all the crises in his history.

Preface: The likelihood of a favorable acceptance of the astounding revelation to be made in this essay will be considerably heightened if the epochal disclosure is preceded by sufficient prefatory exegesis to present it in its proper "frame of reference". So incredible is the true esoteric elucidation of the lost meaning of the Scriptures of Christianity that the immediate reaction will generate the demand to know what historical circumstances or developments could have led in the first place to so fateful a loss of vital knowledge once possessed. It will therefore be judicious to begin the exposition by presenting certain items of the historical background as necessary and highly enlightening introductory matter. This explanatory material must begin with the broad blunt statement that what is commonly believed about the Bible as a book, its date, authorship and "inspiration", is all quite erroneous. Let us be explicit in this: the solid bulk of common belief about this book is totally untrue There is scarcely a single item of the common man's presuppositions about the Christian Scriptures, - who wrote its books, when it was written, how the composition was "dictated" or "inspired", what its message really means, in what language it was written, what is its assumed historical reference, how and why these particular books were selected out of hundreds to become "the Bible", and other subsidiary questions by the score - that comes within the proverbial mile of the actual truth concerning this mysterious document that for centuries has held the minds of millions under the prodigious obsession of its inviolable sanctity. The grim and sober truth must now be stated, that all general ideas about this volume, disseminated among the masses by the priests of the religions and never corrected by them, are totally, grossly, tragically false to fact.

Through Science to Religion

Science has been considered religion's most formidable enemy. On the contrary it is destined to be religion's savior and redeemer. Religion has sunk to abject impotence in the life of humanity because it has abandoned science in the ancient day, suppressed and thwarted science in its late medieval and modern resurgence and looked at it with jealousy in the whole period of its manifestation. All in all it is an amazing and nearly incredible story and it has never been told in the glaring light of its full revelation hitherto. The gist of the broad sweeping truth in the foregoing statements can be compacted in the one comprehensive affirmation that religion in very early times turned from the exploitation of its highest values in the world of the natural and sought them in the field of the supernatural. It shifted the area of its operations and realizations from the regular and common procedure of cosmic law over to the realm of the magical and the miraculous. No founder of a religion was considered to have presented adequate credentials until he had demonstrated his power to work "miracles". If he could not heal the sick and maimed, the lame and blind, he did not come properly certified as an authentic proclaimer of the power of God. The prime word in all religion became "conversion". Religion was considered to be doing its work when it transformed a natural man over into a person who had put himself in contact with a power outside himself which would take him out of nature and bless him with adventitious and exceptional influences. The field of religion came to be regarded as lying not in the world of commonplace events under nature, but reaching into an area of special dispensation, of extraordinary manifestation, of transcendental causality. Religion was to take a man out of the world and make him a citizen of a diviner kingdom, in which he would no longer be amenable to the currents and forces that affect the man of the natural world, but would enjoy an immunity from them along with a liberty stated by revered Scriptures to be the unique portion of the elect and the redeemed. Religion thus aimed to liberate its votaries from the sluggish bondage to the natural and elevate them to a state of blessedness in a boundless freedom in the world of spirit. There are grounds for comprehending the course of this development in world religion and seeing it, in part at least, as the inevitable result of forces generated from given historical situations and working ahead in wrong directions. Nevertheless it represents tragic misfortune for mankind. Our concern here is to demonstrate that it was in toto due to religion's defection from and hostility to science. - Alvin Boyd Kuhn
