From the beginning of his career, Ambrose Bierce wrote stories of all different types-humorous sketches, satirical squibs, and weird tales. This volume prints some of his most memorable fiction-his tales of psychological and supernatural horror. Bierce was a profound student of the psychology of fear, and his tales depicted human beings succumbing to the fear of death ("A Watcher by the Dead"), fear of wild animals ("The Man and the Snake," "The Eyes of the Panther"), and the inhumanity of human beings against their own kind ("A Holy Terror," "A Baby Tramp"). Other tales venture into the supernatural, introducing the notion of revenants ("The Death of Halpin Frayser"), ghosts ("The Moonlit Road"), and haunted houses ("The Boarded Window"). Some stories are forward-looking tales of science fiction ("The Damned Thing," "Moxon's Master"), while others appear to be parodies of the fashionable spiritualism of the day. Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?) was the leading American writer of weird fiction between Edgar Allan Poe and H. P. Lovecraft. Having served in some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, Bierce settled in San Francisco, where he became a fearless journalist and satirist, attacking corrupt politicians, long-winded clerics, wretched poetasters, and others who incurred his wrath. The stories in this volume are presented in definitive texts based on a consultation of manuscripts and early publications. They are edited by S. T. Joshi, a leading authority on Bierce and weird fiction.

It took Ambrose Bierce some time to process his Civil War experiences and transmute them into fiction, but when he did so, beginning in the 1880s, he produced some of the most memorable stories to emerge out of that conflict. Many of these tales border on the weird, as in the celebrated "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," a masterful tale of psychological terror; the grisly "Chickamauga"; "One of the Missing," a grim account of the fear of death; and "A Horseman in the Sky," which mingles realism and fantasy. Another side of Bierce is revealed in his tales of the grotesque, where outrageous scenarios and broad humor are the keynotes. Many of these tales are set in the Wild West, where encounters with bears, Native Americans, and others can lead to horror and death. Particularly memorable are a quartet of stories that Bierce labelled "The Parenticide Club." Ambrose Bierce's satirical flair is most prevalent in his tall tales and similar sketches, where all manner of human foibles are lampooned: the excesses of the press; the corruption endemic in business; the absurdities of class distinctions; and so on. Several tales depict buffooneries on the open sea ("The Jeannette and the Corwin, " "The History of Windbag the Sailor"), while others expose the crudities of life in the American West ("A Mirage in Arizona"). A distinctive facet of Bierce's work is a series of political fantasies, several of them taking place in the future, where his skewering of social and political institutions-the dominance of "trusts" or monopolies; the evils of insurance; and the very principle of democracy-are pungently satirized. My Pain, Your Pain is a scintillating book consisting of fifty two poems that are written from the bottom of the heart. The poems cover a range of themes such as human pain, oppression, suffering, nature's lamentations, African consciousness and whispering voices. The poems are living experiences about the trials and tribulations of mankind in our contemporary world; and in some ways portray a pathetic lack of restrain in our power relations. No doubt some of the poems prick our conscience, evoke our sense of guilt, court our sympathy, raise our levels of consciousness, shake the very foundations of our values, and at the same time give us hope in the midst of despair. The book is thoroughly captivating, ensnaring and intoxicating, which breathes fresh air in a world fixated on science and technology. This is a powerful work of art which readers must experience in their life time.

For decades, many people have had the thought that a lot of things still remain extremely complicated to achieve. In fact, right from the early ages, many things people never gave a chance as being achievable have been proved possible by inventors and other great men and women who have turned their ideas into wonderful things. But in spite of these wonderful acts, some still lack the hope and faith that would have pushed them to move to a greater level. The fact is that anyone can make anything either possible or impossible by the way he or she thinks. Take for instance, those who look at the world as full of possibilities have really achieved a lot in that line of thinking, while those who assume that the world is full of impossibilities have either remained the same or are still struggling on their way up the success ladder, without getting to any tangible level. After reading through this book, you will realize that nothing is actually impossible, rather those things people consider or think of as impossibilities are just like a very large quantity of gold kept somewhere in a place, which is neither too hidden nor too open, but only waiting for a smart eyed person to discover and start reaping the benefits. The lessons learnt from the book, when put into practice will easily transform one from a situation of hopelessness to that of prosperity.

The atrocities constituting this "cold collation" of diabolisms are taken mainly from various Californian journals. They are cast in the American language, and liberally enriched with unintelligibility. If they shall prove incomprehensible on this side of the Atlantic, the reader can pass to the other side at a moderately extortionate charge. In the pursuit of my design I think I have killed a good many people in one way and another; but the reader will please to observe that they were not people worth the trouble of leaving alive. Besides, I had the interests of my collaborator to consult. In writing, as in compiling, I have been ably assisted by my scholarly friend Mr. Satan; and to this worthy gentleman must be attributed most of the views herein set forth. While the plan of the work is partly my own, its spirit is wholly his; and this illustrates the ascendancy of the creative over the merely imitative mind. Palmam qui meruit ferat-I shall be content with the profit. DOD GRILE.
