Niihau has a unique history and a self-sufficient community who speaks a distinct dialect of Hawaiian language. Annette Kuuipolani Wong, a former resident of Niihau who lived there for the first twenty-one years of her life, has recorded stories passed down orally by Niihau's people, who cherished their land and respected the owners. By writing these stories, Wong hopes to perpetuate the voices of her ancestors whose remarkable tales teach us and the following generations about life on the island.

In this important work Annette Angela Portillo examines Native American women’s autobiographical discourses and argues that the complexity of these life stories resists generic classifications. The “sovereign stories” and “blood memories” not only reveal the multiple layers of history and identity shared by each author but demonstrate how their narratives are grounded in ancestral memory and land. Portillo analyzes traditional autobiographies and memoirs alongside interviews and social media to explore the intricacies of Native American women’s voices and the stories that they share.

American artist George A. Frolic Weymouth (1936 2016) was a visionary conservationist, coachman, and accomplished painter. Like his friend and artistic mentor Andrew Wyeth, Weymouth worked chiefly in egg tempera and watercolour to create a highly personal panorama of the landscapes and people he knew in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where he lived. Weymouth, a sixth-generation member of the du Pont family, was not only a skilful painter but also a seminal force in preserving tens of thousands of acres of picturesque scenery around the Brandywine River in Pennsylvania and Delaware. Weymouth also cofounded the Brandywine River Museum of Art, home to a distinguished collection of American art dating to the mid-nineteenth century and renowned for its holdings representing three generations of the Wyeth family of artists. Richly illustrated with Weymouth s paintings and sketches from throughout his career, this large-format volume also includes a chronology of the artist s fascinating life, illustrated with many personal and archival images.

Lunigiana is a rugged and untamed mountainous region of Tuscany, flanked by the Liguria coastline and Emilia Romagna, whose cuisine has been shaped by its distinctive landscape and location. Author and stylist Annette Joseph realised a dream in 2016 when she and her husband purchased and renovated a stunning medieval fortress, aptly named La Fortezza (The Fortress), in this little-known area. Enamoured by its rich food heritage, medieval food history, and long-lasting traditions, Joseph sought out authentic and traditional dishes from the best chefs, home cooks, and slow food purveyors in the region. This book showcases these rustic recipes, some of which have been enjoyed for centuries. Lunigiana s cuisine brings together the flavours of both the coast and the mountains as well as drawing inspiration from the neighbouring regions. It is home to a unique selection of ingredients, such as chestnut flour, and its specialties are often still prepared the ancient way, in a cast-iron Dutch oven known as a testo over an open fire. Lunigiana is also recognized as a UNESCO-certified slow food region, and Joseph s recipes highlight slow food practices, such as using produce from your own garden, sourcing seasonal ingredients from local producers, and preserving traditional cooking methods. Breathtaking photographs by David Loftus highlight the beauty of Lunigiana s cuisine and countryside, as well as La Fortezza s dreamy vineyard, orchards, and kitchen garden, where Joseph collected, tested, and developed her recipes. This book is an incredible culinary and visual journey into an undiscovered region in Italy and a must-have for anyone who loves Italian food and culture.

Thomas Jefferson is still presented today as an enigmatic figure, despite being written about more than any other Founding Father. Lauded as the most articulate voice of American freedom, even as he held people in bondage, Jefferson is variably described as a hypocrite, an atheist and a simple-minded proponent of limited government. Now, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and leading Jefferson scholar team up to present an absorbing and revealing character study that finally clarifies the philosophy of Jefferson. The authors explore what they call the “empire” of Jefferson’s imagination—his expansive state of mind born of the intellectual influences and life experiences that led him into public life as a modern avatar of the enlightenment, who often likened himself to an ancient figure—“the most blessed of the patriarchs”.

Renowned historian Annette Atkins presents a fresh understanding of how a complex and modern Minnesota came into being in "Creating Minnesota". Each chapter of this innovative state history focuses on a telling detail, a revealing incident, or a meaningful issue that illuminates a larger event, social trends, or politics during a period in our past. A three-act play about Minnesota's statehood vividly depicts the competing interests of Natives, traders, and politicians who lived in the same territory but moved in different worlds. Oranges are the focal point of a chapter about railroads and transportation: how did a St. Paul family manage to celebrate their 1898 Christmas with fruit that grew no closer than 1,500 miles from their home? A photogaphic essay brings to life three communities of the 1920s, seen through the lenses of local and itinerant photographers. The much-sought state fish helps to explain the new Minnesota, where pan-fried walleye and walleye quesadillas coexist on the same north woods menu.In "Creating Minnesota" Atkins invites readers to experience the texture of people's lives through the decades, offering a fascinating and unparalleled approach to the history of our state.

Our impressions of leisure today often involve rest, relaxation, and freedom from work. These impressions are misguided if their limits remain unchallenged. This book reveals the deep essence of leisure by repositioning it as a philosophy of communication that cultivates the mind/body. Fashioned after Calvin Schrag’s The Self after Postmodernity, this work explores leisure in discourse, leisure in action, leisure in community, and leisure in transcendence. By integrating the philosophies of Gadamer, Merleau-Ponty, Arendt, Levinas, Pieper, and others, we can illuminate the transformative nature of leisure and experience a reawakening of the contemplative spirit in action.

But God knows that there is more to you than what meets the eye and he cares for you, inside and out. These thirty-one days of devotionals-each with stories about teens, room to journal, relevant Scriptures, and thoughts to think about-will help you learn to care, too. My Year Before the Mast

Annette Brock Davis

Hounslow Press

In 1933, a young Canadian woman rejected the expectations of society and her upper-class family and became a crew member aboard one of the last great four-masted sailing vessels that still plied the ocean. It was not an easy task. Young Annette had to fight pressures from her family, rejection from schools of navigation, and doubts from ship owners. When she finally found a berth as an apprentice seaman, she faced hostility from officers and crew, who grumbled that she should be home "raising babies." In the end, however, Annette won their respect, taking in sails, standing night watches, hauling and coiling ropes all the tasks the men were doing, with no concession to a girl's lesser strength. My Year Before the Mast tells the story of Annette Brock Davis's life on the sea as the first female crew member of a commercial sailing line. Her courage and determination to break into a closed male world are central to this book, but we cannot ignore the fact that, while this is a book about a woman's struggle, it is also a book about the sea.Davis brings to life an era long gone, and introduces an incredible cast of characters the crew, officers, and passengers, each with his own foibles, humour, generosity, and flashes of meanness. But through it all, Annette emerges as the most remarkable character of them all.

DNA sequencing has become increasingly efficient over the years, resulting in an enormous increase in the amount of data gen- ated. In recent years, the focus of sequencing has shifted, from being the endpoint of a project, to being a starting point. This is especially true for such major initiatives as the human genome project, where vast tracts of DNA of unknown function are sequenced. This sheer volume of available data makes advanced computer methods ess- tial to analysis, and a familiarity with computers and sequence ana- sis software a vital requirement for the researcher involved with DNA sequencing. Even for nonsequencers, a familiarity with sequence analysis software can be important. For instance, gene sequences already present in the databases can be extremely useful in the design of cloning and genetic manipulation experiments. This two-part work on Analysis of Data is designed to be a practical aid to the researcher who uses computers for the acquisition, storage, or analysis of nucleic acid (and/or p- tein) sequences. Each chapter is written such that a competent sci- tist with basic computer literacy can carry out the procedure successfully at the first attempt by simply following the detailed pr- tical instructions that have been described by the author. A Notes section, which is included at the end of each chapter, provides advice on overcoming the common problems and pitfalls sometimes enco- tered by users of the sequence analysis software. Software packages for both the mainframe and personal computers are described.
