The Silence of Barbara Synge

The Silence of Barbara Synge

Bill McCormack

Manchester University Press
2009
nidottu
'The silence of Barbara Synge' provides a fascinating companion volume to Bill McCormack's acclaimed 'Fool of the family' (2000), a biography of the playwright J.M. Synge (1871-1909).Taking the alledged death of Mrs John Hatch (née Synge) in 1767 as a focal point, this book explores the varied strands of the Synge family tree in eighteenth and nineteenth century Ireland.Key events in the family's history are carefully documented, including a suicide in 1769 which is echoed in an early Synge play, the effects of the famine which influenced 'The playboy of the western world' in 1907, and the behaviour of Francis Synge at the time of the union.'The silence of Barbara Synge' is a unique work of cultural enquiry, combining archival research, literary criticism, and religious and medical history to pull the strands together and relate them to the family's literary descendent J.M. Synge.
My Tango with Barbara Strozzi

My Tango with Barbara Strozzi

Russell Hoban

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC
2008

Recently separated, Phil Ockerman falls hard for Bertha Strunk at a tango lesson in Clerkenwell. Bertha also bears a strong resemblance to the seventeenth-century Venetian singer and composer Barbara Strozzi (with whom Phil happens to be obsessed), to the point where Phil is no longer sure which is which. Navigating several London underground lines and considerable planetary activity, Russell Hoban's intriguing romance tangos its way through a world of infidelity, artificial eyeballs, baseball bats and music - never missing a daring, seductive step.

The Films of Barbara Wagner & Benjamin De Burca

The Films of Barbara Wagner & Benjamin De Burca

Art Gallery of York University,Canada

The Brazilian-German artist duo of Barbara Wagner (born 1980) and Benjamin de Burca (born 1975), formed in 2011, counter the impulse to categorize culture in terms that are fixed or deemed folk by organizations such as UNESCO by exploring cultural change across generations and geographies. Their work celebrates and reframes vernacular cultural forms as they have manifested through time; as popular traditions become pop culture, for instance. Through their films, the artists examine a space in between, where cultural forms of the past adapt in response to changing economic conditions particularly in emerging economies or post-colonial geographical contexts and where popular genres persist through cultural mixing and diasporic refashioning. The artists look to how performative forms of colonial cultural resistance in Brazil's northeast, in particular, continue today but in revised expression. This book, designed by Lisa Kiss, leads a discussion about their films, including the work slated to premiere at the 2019 Venice Biennale.

The Courtship of Barbara Holt: Mark Dever, English major, has trouble talking to women. It's worse than being speechless: When Mark is interested, he speaks in blank verse, like some Shakespearean courtier. When he meets Barbara Holt, his inadvertent poetry goes into overdrive. But Barbara is not interested in some wishy-washy English major, unlike her friend Jenn, who is an English major herself. Can his friends help Mark woo Barbara successfully and, more importantly, woo Jenn? Dennis Thompson Goes On Strike: Dennis Thompson has had enough. All his life, some nameless author has been writing the book that is Dennis's life, and Dennis has decided that he's not going to play along any more. If The Author says, "Jump ", Dennis is going to say, "No." It's like Six Characters in Search of an Author, but with a twist.
