Numerous analyses, discussions and commentaries on the poetical art of this difficult epic have appeared. This volume provides a philological commentary on the first book of the Argonautica. Special attention is paid to the sources upon which Valerius drew, and a comparison made with earlier literary tradition (in particular with the first book of Vergil s Aeneid, but also with Seneca s tragedies). In dieser Analyse deutscher und französischer Pressetexte zum Thema Islam wird der sog. Raum zwischen den Zeilen untersucht. Gerade bei einem gesellschaftlich häufig kontrovers und emotional diskutierten Thema lohnt sich der Blick auf das, was den Diskurs implizit mitbestimmt. Aus diesem Grund beschäftigt sich die Autorin mit „versteckten“ Inhalten und geht insbesondere der Frage nach wie Textverstehen funktioniert. Dabei legt sie die argumentative Grundstruktur von informationsbetonten Pressetexten offen. Sie zeigt, dass sich diese aus dem Zusammenwirken implizit bleibender Argumentationsmuster und einzelsprachlich realisierter kommunikativer Strategien speist. Sowohl die mit dem Islam verknüpften Argumentationsmuster wie auch die betreffenden kommunikativen Strategien zeichnen sich durch Wiederholbarkeit aus. Dies ist ein wesentlicher Grund dafür, dass sie intuitiv verstanden und angewendet werden können. Wo die Debatte um ‚richtig‘ und ‚falsch‘ ins Leere läuft, ist diese Herangehensweise geeignet, Themen konstruktiv zu diskutieren. Dies gilt für den wissenschaftlichen Kontext ebenso wie für ein anwendungsbezogenes Umfeld.

1779 ver ffentlicht Johann Gottfried Herder die Apokalypse-Paraphrase Maran Atha. Ein Jahr sp ter publiziert Johann Caspar Lavater sein hexametrisches Epos "Jesus Messias, oder die Zukunft des Herrn", gefolgt vom vierb ndigen Epos "Jesus Messias, oder die Evangelien und Apostelgeschichte in Ges ngen" (1783-1786). Herders und Lavaters Werke zeigen, dass die Tradition der christlichen Dichtung nicht, wie es die bisherige Literaturgeschichtsschreibung annimmt, mit der Vollendung von Klopstocks "Messias" (1773) zu Ende geht. Wie die ausf hrliche kulturhistorische, intertextuelle und theologiegeschichtliche Analyse belegt, entwickeln Herder und Lavater in der Auseinandersetzung mit dem gro en Vorg nger Klopstock ihre eigenen Vorstellungen dar ber, wie die biblischen Quellen in stilistisch und inhaltlich angemessener Weise zur poetischen Darstellung gebracht werden m ssen. Sie leisten damit einen wichtigen Beitrag in der Diskussion um literar sthetische und poetologische Maximen. Zugleich ist ihre Bibelpoesie theologiegeschichtlich bedeutsam, da sie darin neue exegetische Ans tze entwickeln, bei denen die Verbindung von historisch-kritischer Analyse mit empfindsamer Bibellekt re im Vordergrund steht.

The book addresses the scientific debates on Rembrandt, Metsu, Vermeer, and Hoogstraten that are currently taking place in art history and cultural studies. These focus mainly on the representation of gender difference, the relationship between text and image, and the emotional discourse. They are also an appeal for art history as a form of cultural studies that analyses the semantic potential of art within discursive and social contemporary practices. Dutch painting of the seventeenth century reflects its relationship to visible reality. It deals with ambiguities and contradictions. As an avant-garde artistic media, it also contributes to the emergence of a subjectivity towards the modern “bourgeois”. It discards subject matter from its traditional fixation with iconology and evokes different imaginations and semantizations - aspects that have not been sufficiently taken into account in previous research. The book is to be understood as an appeal for art history as a form of cultural science that analyses the semantic potential of art within discursive and social contemporary practices, and, at the same time, demonstrates its relevance today. Works by Rembrandt, Metsu, Vermeer, Hoogstraten, and others serve as exemplary case studies for addressing current debates in art history and cultural studies, such as representation of gender difference, relationship between text and image, and emotional discourse.

In recent years the field of book studies has been reconceptualized, moving away from a primarily historical and narrative focus. This change, triggered in part by new media, has involved an expansion in the range of research questions considered as well as their theoretical underpinnings. Analysis of the forms of communication used in written media form an essential aspect of this new approach. Conceptually, the series is based on an understanding of written media found in interdisciplinary perspectives as well as communication and media studies. Accordingly, the volumes published in the series will not focus solely on media such as books, newspapers, and journals, but also address the broader dimensions of communication in written media overall. This proven approach in research and teaching is integrative and thus has many points of intersection to neighboring disciplines. Diebstahl und Raub sind ebenso wie Gaben reziproke Handlungen mit vielfältigen literarischen Einsatzmöglichkeiten. Obwohl widerrechtliche Aneignungen schon auf den ersten Blick zu den zentralen Themen einer ›Wikingerliteratur‹ zählen, wurden diese Verbrechen von der Sagaforschung bisher kaum beachtet. Sie funktionieren jedoch nicht nur als Einfallstore in die Erzählwelt der Isländersagas und deren narrativen Verfahren, sondern gewähren auch Blicke auf die zugehörigen Wertvorstellungen. Die Isländersagas erzählen von den ersten Generationen, die nach der Besiedelung Islands gemeinsam eine neue Gesellschaft formen. Um deren wichtigste Maßstäbe, Ansehen und Ehre, zu erreichen und zu stabilisieren, müssen sämtliche Angriffe auf Person und Besitz angemessen vergolten werden. Heimlicher Diebstahl und offener Raub fordern die Siedlergesellschaft heraus, eine Neubewertung von Status und Ansehen aller Parteien anzustellen. Diese Verbrechen funktionieren damit als Kristallisationspunkte der Handlungsstränge und lassen die Eigenschaften der erzählten Welt hervortreten. The last decades have witnessed a renewed interest in near-synonymy. In particular, recent distributional corpus-based approaches used for semantic analysis have successfully uncovered subtle distinctions in meaning between near-synonyms. However, most studies have dealt with the semantic structure of sets of near-synonyms from a synchronic perspective, while their diachronic evolution generally has been neglected. Against this backdrop, the aim of this book is to examine five adjectival near-synonyms in the history of American English from the understudied semantic domain of SMELL: fragrant, perfumed, scented, sweet-scented, and sweet-smelling. Their distribution is analyzed across a wide range of contexts, including semantic, morphosyntactic, and stylistic ones, since distributional patterns of this type serve as a proxy for semantic (dis)similarity. The data is submitted to various univariate and multivariate statistical techniques, making it possible to uncover fine-grained (dis)similarities among the near-synonyms, as well as possible changes in their prototypical structures. The book sheds valuable light on the diachronic development of lexical near-synonyms, a dimension that has up to now been relatively disregarded.
