As culturally relevant psychiatry becomes common practice, the need for competent and culturally relevant forensic psychiatry comes to the forefront. This volume, written by one expert in cultural psychiatry and another in forensic psychiatry addresses that need. By combining their expertise in these areas, they are able to develop and create a new body of knowledge and experiences addressing the issue of the cultural aspects of forensic psychiatry. Beginning with an introduction to cultural and ethnic aspects of forensic psychiatry, this volume will address basic issues of the practice, as well as more detailed areas ranging from the various psychiatric disorders to intensive analysis and discussion of how to perform forensic psychiatric practice in a culturally relevant and competent way. Also the book suggests methods for continued awareness and sensitivity to issues of cultural and ethnic diversity in the field.

Natural Law and Religious Freedom

Natural Law and Religious Freedom

J. Daryl Charles

Routledge

Every successive generation finds fresh reasons for the study of natural law. Current interest in the natural law may well be due to a pervasive moral pessimism in the Western cultural context and wider contemporary geopolitical challenges. Those geopolitical challenges result from two significant and worrisome global developments – unprecedented violent persecution of religious minorities on several continents and a growing climate of secular hostility toward religious faith in Western societies. Natural Law and Religious Freedom aims to address what is relatively absent from the literature by demonstrating the importance of natural law ethics in both establishing and preserving basic human rights, of which religious freedom has pride of place.Probing contemporary challenges to natural law thinking that are both internal and external to religious faith, and examining the character and constitution of natural law ethics, Natural Law and Religious Freedom will be of interest to theologians, ethicists and philosophers as well as policy analysts, politicians and activists who are concerned to anchor religious freedom and human rights policy considerations in an enduring way.

An African Pentecostal Hermeneutics

An African Pentecostal Hermeneutics

Marius Nel; Daryl Balia

pokkari
The face of African Christianity is becoming Pentecostal. African Pentecostalism is a diverse movement, but its collective interest in baptism in the Spirit and the result of Pentecost in daily living binds it together. Pentecostals read the Bible with the expectation that the Spirit who inspired the authors will again inspire them to hear it as God's word. They emphasize the experiential, at times at the cost of proper doctrine and practice. This book sketches an African hermeneutic that provides guidance to a diverse movement with many faces, and serves as corrective for doctrine and practice in the face of some excesses and abuses (especially in some parts of the neo-Pentecostal movement). African Pentecostalism's contribution to the hermeneutical debate is described before three points are discussed that define it: the centrality of the Holy Spirit in reading the Bible, the eschatological lens that Pentecostals use when they read the Bible, and the faith community as normative for the interpretation of the Bible. ""From one of the southern ends of the earth, Marius Nel provides a near exhaustive engagement with the existing literature on pentecostal hermeneutics--scholars should not miss out on the feast of extensive footnotes reaching from cover to cover --and comes up with an almost comprehensive synthesis from a southern African perspective. What emerges is a reformulation of the classic this-is-that eschatological sensibility that bridges the scriptural text with the contemporary horizon, albeit in this case enriched with the orality and performativity characteristic of an authentically African pentecostal movement that itself stretches back, however complicatedly, to the early twentieth-century transnational and worldwide revival."" --Amos Yong, Professor of Theology & Mission, Fuller Theological Seminary ""In this carefully researched and historically sensitive book, Marius Nel recognizes that 'deep in the soul of Pentecostalism are its African origins.' He draws together his interests in Pentecostalism and African Christianity to make a wise call for a Jesus-centered hermeneutic that is Spirit led, eschatologically alert, and community based. Readers will benefit from the wealth of information brought together here. --William P. Atkinson, Senior Lecturer in Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies, London School of Theology ""In this book Marius Nel defines the distinctive contribution that African pentecostal hermeneutics makes to hermeneutics . . . He] shows how orthodoxy, orthopathy, and orthopraxy are intertwined in pentecostal hermeneutics, and that interpreters of the Bible should expect that what people in biblical times experienced with God is to be repeated in the contemporary experience."" --Fika J. van Rensburg, Professor of New Testament Studies, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, North-West University, South Africa Marius Nel is Research Professor of Ecumene: Pentecostalism and Neo-Pentecostalism at the Unit for Reformational Theology and the Development of the South African Society of North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa. He is the author of Pacifism and Pentecostals in South Africa (2018).

This is my story, a journey of the heart and mind. It's a journey from introspection and emotional turmoil to a life enjoyed before our loving heavenly Father. More than my story, it is instructive as well, a stream of my thoughts on different subjects that relate to our walk before God, one that I trust reflects the Father's heart and brings encouragement to the downtrodden, one that inspires His children to walk fully in all He has prepared in advance for us to walk in. I trust that through these pages many will be stirred in their passion for God and be set free to receive the love of our Father, to love and enjoy God and be enthralled by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to appreciate the wondrous work of His Spirit in our hearts, to run the great race set before each of us. Finally, one of the purposes of this book is to encourage believers from different tribes of the body of Christ to embrace one another and engage one another from a place of honor - heart and mind. This embrace of one another includes the acceptance of the different emphases each of us brings to the body. The embrace of mystery and the contentment with not having to fully comprehend the truths of Scripture, is key to us maturing and learning to hear one another and welcome each other's unique contribution. It is a place of security in our heavenly Father, free from the fear of error, where we will be truly free to listen to one another, and even be taught by one another, with His Spirit guiding us into all truth to a mature bride, to the full measure of the stature of Christ. Jonathan Gale in The Joy of Thinking with You gets it. He communicates with spirit, clarity and passion. Those who read this powerful witness carefully can have their own walk with God changed forever. I wouldn't be surprised if this book outlives us a hundred years. Robert G. Tuttle, Jr. Ph.D. Emeritus Professor of World Christianity Asbury Theological Seminary JONATHAN GALE is a practicing scientist and former university chemistry professor. The oldest son of medical missionaries in Costa Rica, he now resides in Massachusetts with his wife of thirty years with five grown children. A church elder, he enjoys Bible teaching and writing, his first book being In Your Name We Glory: An Inspiration Guide and Complete Reference to the Names and Titles of God

This book is for men who aspire to the office and task of elder or pastor in a church. As you lead or prepare for leadership, this book will help you evaluate how you are doing and make you aware of the areas of your life that need further growth. One of the primary purposes of this book is to call us all into a lifestyle of repentance so that we may never find ourselves too exhausted to continue or, to be disqualified from doing the ministry that we love and are called to. This book is designed as a discipleship tool. To benefit the most, you need to take time to read each chapter and work through the questions and activities included at the end of each chapter. You may want to do this by yourself, or with another person or group of people so that you can grow together and keep each other accountable for progress.
