If you like banging your head against the wall, shifting your definitions of love and art, setting your yearning to music, or going a little bonkers, then Halberd Books is for you. The longest, most ambitious poetry volume from David M. Briggs yet, Halberd Books vol. 3 presents one hundred never-before-compiled poems about breaking down daily, suffering desperate infatuation, clawing out a home, facing down injustice, scratching down stories, and finding safety in spite of it all. Profane, humane, and slightly deranged, Halberd Books vol. 3 is an impassioned howl of a book.

In 2023, David M. Briggs collected five years' worth of poetry chapbooks into one full-length collection, the first volume of Halberd Books. Now, just under a year later, five new chapbooks are collected in Halberd Books volume 2. Archive features four short fiction pieces and a poem about the ways that we love and the stories that shape us. Echolalia travels through twenty poems about stress and sadness and surviving through it all. Unserious is a twenty-four poem statement about believing in beauty and finding the fun in life. Miscreants is a short little twelve-poem meditation on the joys and frustrations of cat ownership. Reflections finishes out the volume with twenty poems about love and love poems (which are not the same thing). Over the course of seventy-eight poems and four stories, Halberd Books vol. 2 changes the way the author talks about life, about love, and about what it takes to get through each year.

Cancer Therapy with Radiolabeled Antibodies explores the most current experimental and clinical advances in the newly emerging field of cancer radioimmunotherapy (RAIT). Providing a multidisciplinary and international context, some of the world's leading experts examine the problems and prospects of RAIT from radiation, immunological, chemical, physical, physiological, and clinical perspectives with both overviews and original research. Discussions cover the up-to-date clinical results in the RAIT of ovarian, breast, colorectal, and brain cancers, as well as the current status of RAIT in the management of B cell lymphomas. Radiobiology, dosimetry, radiochemistry, targeting biology in experimental models, clinical experiences in hematopoietic and solid tumors, and new approaches to improve cancer radioimmunotherapy are also discussed. In addition, new dosimetry concepts, new labeling methods, new concepts of antibody pharmacokinetics, and new methods to enhance selective cancer radioimmunotherapy are included.
Escape from Democracy

Escape from Democracy

David M. Levy; Sandra J. Peart

The orthodox view of economic policy holds that public deliberation sets the goals or ends, and then experts select the means to implement these goals. This assumes that experts are no more than trustworthy servants of the public interest. David M. Levy and Sandra J. Peart examine the historical record to consider cases in which experts were trusted with disastrous results, such as eugenics, the regulatory use of security ratings, and central economic planning. This history suggests that experts have not only the public interest but also their own interests to consider. The authors then recover and extend an alternative view of economic policy that subjects experts' proposals to further discussion, resulting in transparency and ensuring that the public obtains the best insights of experts in economics while avoiding pitfalls such as expert bias.
Sport, Democracy and War in Classical Athens

Sport, Democracy and War in Classical Athens

David M. Pritchard

Cambridge University Press
2016
pokkari
Athenian democracy may have opened up politics to every citizen, but it had no impact on participation in sport. The city's sportsmen continued to be drawn from the elite, and so it comes as a surprise that sport was very popular with non-elite citizens of the classical period, who rewarded victorious sportsmen lavishly and created an unrivalled program of local sporting festivals on which they spent staggering sums of money. They also shielded sportsmen from the public criticism which was otherwise normally directed towards the elite and its conspicuous activities. This book is a bold and novel exploration of this apparent contradiction, which examines three of the fundamental aspects of Athens in the classical period - democratic politics, public commitment to sport and constant warfare - and is essential reading for all of those who are interested in Greek sport, Athenian democracy and its waging of war.

The Empire's Reformations

The Empire's Reformations

David M. Luebke

nidottu
The Empire's Reformations provides a concise overview of reform movements in 16th-century Germany that gave birth to the modern division of western Christianity into multiple denominations – Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Calvinist, and more. It exposes the origins of modern religious pluralism, both in battle for souls among these emerging camps and in the struggles of political leaders at every level to manage the threat that religious diversity posed to tranquillity and order in a rigidly hierarchical society. As such, it offers a prehistory of religious toleration, not as a positive value – few regarded toleration as inherently good – but as a strategy for keeping the peace.David M. Luebke considers the reformations of religion in the context of concurrent transformations in the political and judicial structures of the Holy Roman Empire, that sprawling confederation of principalities and city-states that embraced most regions where German was spoken. This allows Luebke to view the religious reforms through the lens of imperial politics, showing how the Empire differed from the Atlantic monarchies, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean. On a different and equally significant level, he examines how ordinary people of all backgrounds experienced the controversy over religion and responded to reforms of doctrine and observance. The inclusion of both the imperial and local perspectives moves the Reformation beyond the familiar story of theological combat and reimagines it as something that had resonance throughout the world, impacting people’s lives in the process.
