Que Vaina...What does that mean? Well Que Vaina directly translates to "that pod" ... because a vaina is indeed a bean pod. But, Dominicans always use words differently than most Spanish speaking folks. The word vaina can mean anything. A thing. That thing over there. That situation. That attitude. That person who thinks they are the only ice cold Coca Cola in a hot desert. When I say it can mean anything, I mean it It just depends how you utilize the word in a sentence. The way I use Que Vaina ... means "Damn that's crazy," or "Wow that sucks," or "What luck."The set of anecdotes or stories to follow will make you say Que Vaina ... and maybe even suck your teeth and say "Ay ombe," which means "Aww man." They are not the most devastating you will hear, or the most juicy, but maybe you can relate to them. Maybe you know a friend who went through something like what I am about to share. Or maybe you can read and avoid making some of the mistakes I made, like loving peanut butter.
On the Edge: Writing the Border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic is a literary and cultural history which brings to the fore a compelling but, so far, largely neglected body of work which has the politics of borderline-crossing as well as the poetics of borderland-dwelling on Hispaniola at its core. Over thirty fictional and non-fictional literary texts (novels, biographical narratives, memoirs, plays, poems, and travel writing), are given detailed attention alongside journalism, geo-political-historical accounts of the status quo on the island, and striking visual interventions (films, sculptures, paintings, photographs, videos and artistic performances), many of which are sustained and complemented by different forms of writing (newspaper cuttings, graffiti, captions, song lyrics, screenplay, tattoos). Dominican, Dominican-American, Haitian and Haitian-American writers and artists are put in dialogue with authors who were born in Europe, the rest of the Americas, Algeria, New Zealand, and Japan in order to illuminate some of the processes and histories that have woven and continue to weave the texture of the borderland and the complex web of border relations on the island. Particular attention is paid to the causes, unfolding, and immediate aftermath of the 1791 slave revolt, the 1937 massacre of Haitians and Haitian-Dominicans in the Dominican Northern borderland as well as to recent events and topical issues such as the 2010 earthquake, migration, and environmental degradation. On the Edge is an invaluable multicultural archive for those who want to engage fully with the past and present of Hispaniola and refuse to comply with the idea that an acceptable future is unattainable.

And he had no problem knockin' somebody out, when it came to London.Their attraction for each other had always been there and anyone could see that, but neither of them spoke up, until Dom got locked up. After serving a two year sentence, his release date is finally approaching, and all he wants when he gets out, is London.London had always been a ride or die chick for Dom and she's been counting down the days for him to be a free man. And with her favorite time of the year approaching, she's hoping it won't be like any other, because all she really wants for Christmas, is Dom.
Author, Paz Ellis, takes readers on a cross-cultural and trans-generational journey through her childhood in West New York, New Jersey to adulthood with Plantains and the Seven Plagues, A Memoir: Half-Dominican, Half-Cuban, and Full Life.Paz insightfully describes the complexities and contradictions of growing up in the United States to a Dominican mother and a Cuban father. From her mother's obsessive cleaning rituals to her father's remarkable knack for invention, this book beautifully explains what living a hyphenated-life means for so many Hispanics. She writes about what it means to be American, and Cuban, and Dominican, and having to be all of those things and only one of them... all at the same time.Following the passing of her mother, the author finds herself on a search for meaning through not only her past but also her mother's. This book is about life, loss, memory, culture, and family, the glue that determines who your family actually is... love. Written with a healthy dose of wit and an abundance of sincerity, Plantains and the Seven Plagues is honest, painfully relatable, and deeply heartfelt.
