A Social Emotional Literacy Curriculum for Adolescents contains vignettes about real- life issues that challenge today's adolescent student. The design and content of the curriculum provide a means for teachers and group leaders to engage students in real life issues that may impact their lives. There are seventy vignettes that are taken from actual situations that arise in school and represent challenges in decision making that many students will encounter. The vignettes are open-ended and there are three components to each lesson. Students participate in a pre-reading discussion to front-load the issue raised in the vignetter. Then a reading. of the vignette follows. There are a set of discussion questions that follow where students have make inferences and cite evidence from the vignetter to support their conclusions. The literacy component is fused with the issue on which the vignette is based to promote more connection and discussion. Each lesson is a blackline master that is easily duplicated and a student answer sheet is provided in the front matter of the text.

This book is the result of a research on students' voices and perspectives about homework. As a former teacher and administrator, I wanted to know why students do not do their homework. Here are the answers for you. In this book you will find the students, and their teachers' thoughts about homework. There are 3 trends in homework: pro homework, against homework, and homework reform. Yet, most of this research considers the adults' perspective. My interest is on the reality of how homework affects the environment at school and at home. The questionnaires and interviews educed the participants' perceptions and practices about homework. The participating students were in fifth and sixth grade. They represented English language learners, General Education, Gifted and Talented, and Special Education. The participating teachers instruct 5th and 6th grade. The results revealed the reasons why students do not complete their homework. They do not because they find it too hard, boring, or they do not understand it. The participants considered worksheets boring and hard. They expressed to like research projects because it affords flexibility and creativity. The results also suggest no difference in the students' responses from various groups. The teachers' responses revealed a disconcerting issue. We learned that 90% of them assign incomplete classwork as homework. This truth reveals a lack of training in designing homework. The results of this study are important for parents, teachers, and school administrators. It provokes social change, we should enlist students' voices in their education. It should encourage teachers and administrators to develop different homework practices. Homework that would encourage completion, grow dendrites, and student learning.

God is the ultimate matchmaker. Why is dating, particularly for Christians, so challenging? One reason is that interacting with individuals of the opposite sex while you are looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right can, at times, be a lonely, confusing, frustrating, and challenging experience. In his book Lord, Help Me . . . I Have a Date , Dr. Hancock will help you gain insight into how to avoid some of the pitfalls of dating and to meet those challenges. Dr. Hancock also talks very candidly about: the importance of being patient while dating by using the acronym SLOW (stop, listen, observe, wait); how crucial it is to understand yourself prior to starting the dating journey; how sex prior to marriage will complicate most relationships; the fact that you need to HALT when you are hungry, angry, lonely, or tired because thats when you tend to make your biggest mistakes; and the positives and negatives of online or long-distance dating and his personal experiences with both.
Everyday Racism in America and the Power of Forgiveness
This autoethnographic study examines my experiences as an African American born and raised in the United States of America, whofrom the time I realized I was Black at age ten until the present day, more than fifty years laterexperiences racism either overtly or covertly on a daily basis. I first explore my days as a high school student involved in a court desegregation case and the trauma I experienced in the hostile environment where White students openly showed their racial hatred for the Black students who would dare to enroll in their school. I examine my life as a college student in Alabama at the height of the Civil Rights Movement and my participation in nonviolent protests, especially the famous Selma to Montgomery march led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Most people do not realize they are in a narcissistic relationship only to find out that everything they thought about their relationship is really a lie. The hardest thing is to look over your life whether it was a long-term relationship or a short-lived relationship and to find out that the person you thought cared did not have the capacity to do so because of a personality disorder. A personality disorder well hidden under charm and charisma yet destructive to themselves and anyone involved. It hurts to find out that you were only an object/tool to accomplish their own personal goals until you were depleted of the resources needed for their personal gain. This book allows you to take a look at seeds planted throughout life and the thought process that has led so many people into this type of abusive relationship. This book is an honest look at real experiences, the emotional damage and the reality of the lack of awareness within our society of how these individuals operate and leave a trail of destruction everywhere they go.

Go and Come Again

Go and Come Again

Jerry L Jones Ed D

Go and Come Again begins with a focus on the history and culture of a small town in Southwest Virginia during the era of segregated schools and the concurrent Jim Crow mind-set. The first chapters analyze the various struggles of the author's family, selected teachers and students, and the transitions of the early 1960s. Later chapters detail the author's experiences at a historically black college as well as his work experiences as a high school teacher, a professor at a community college, and a professor at a small, church-affiliated liberal arts college which is located near his birthplace. Additionally, the author chronicles his own personal journey-from his early days as the younger son of a single mother who struggled financially to his later profile as author, local politician, church musician, lay speaker, community leader, and educator.Even though the Supreme Court decision of 1954, Brown v. the Board of Education, ruled that racially separate school systems should be ended, it was not until 1965 that this happened in Washington County, Virginia, the county where Jerry Jones was born. Moreover, the shortcomings of public school education for African Americans existed for generations. In his book, Go and Come Again, Jones details the public school experiences of his grandmother's generation, his mother's generation, and his own generation. As a teacher in the fast-changing area of computer literacy, the author devotes significant attention to his desire for graduate study and other opportunities for continuing education. He also analyzes the factors which have contributed to the many successes of Southwest Virginia blacks who left their hometown areas for education and employment. The extent to which one struggles to care for an elderly parent is a topic which brings an array of emotions to the surface. With no other siblings to assist in his mother's final years, Jones had the challenge of being the sole caregiver until her death at age 93-an event which still casts a shadow on his own perceptions of love and family. Delicately, he outlines the key events of that time in his life and his belief that his own life continues to have meaning and that living alone should not be feared.
The Incomprehensible God of the Bible

The Incomprehensible God of the Bible

It is the purpose of this book to discuss the many attributes and actions of God and why much of our thinking about the nature of God and His actions are influenced by our understanding of, or the failure to understand, these mysterious attributes which determine who God is. Therefore, the premise of this book is that the more we understand and accept unequivocally who God is in all of his nature, the better we will understand his actions toward us. It is my hope and prayer that an improved understanding of the incomprehensible nature of God will strengthen the Christian's faith relationship with Him and allow the Christian to worship him more in spirit and in truth, as He has created all of humanity to do. I contend in this book that a greater understanding of the three major attributes of God as descriptors for the nature of God: 1. omniscience; (God knows all things); 2. omnipresence (God is present everywhere); 3. omnipotence (God is all powerful), are absolutely necessary to assist us to better understand the mysteries of God in his relations to the world he has created. This book not only presents the above 3 major attributes of God, but also some of the singular attributes such as love, justice, holiness, mercy, faithfulness, and wrath. These are discussed to help clarify the meaning and purpose of such Biblical doctrines as election, and predestination, and the eternal security of the believer.
Advice from the Empty Nest

Advice from the Empty Nest

Advice from the Empty Nest is meant to do just what it says, provide advice. The perspective is that of an older person, admittedly traditional in nature, speaking to people in their 30s who are about to embark on marriage, or partnership, possibly having children and raising them. While traditional in setting, the advice can serve well anyone who is coupling and moving forward in a familial environment. The advice is not given in a parental fashion, as that might be perceived as officious, but more avuncular in nature. The style of the book is conversational, a little off-hand and homespun, somewhat in the style of Bill Bryson, but nowhere near as detailed, and occasionally humorous. Chapter topics are purposely short and eclectic, ranging from "Buy a Good Can Opener" to "Disney World: When to Go and Other Tips" and "How to Pick a Home, a Neighborhood, a Community," to more thoughtful pieces as in "I Love You," "I Gave Away My Train Set Today," "Love Never Dies", "Too Nice a Day to Die", and "Should I Go (Back) to Church" Almost all chapters blend practical advice with a philosophical rationale, setting a framework for decision-making on the topic, some even with questions to ask. Rarely is advice given as to what specific decision is to be made; rather the advice focuses on what the decision means to the reader and urges the reader to think carefully about the real impact of the decision.Chapter topics are almost randomly positioned, but purposely alternating between minor, more casual topics, and others that are more serious and thoughtful. This is a non-linear book that can be picked up and read in short intervals and in any order. The reader might just need one particular chapter, and once reading or at least scanning the book, it can be used as a reference tool, when needed. The book is not meant to be read only one time, just for enjoyment or to kill time in the airport. In fact, it is meant to be kept and used and passed along. It is a book that Martha Stewart or the Today Show could recommend and would be a great gift. This is an enjoyable book to read, and one that will provide help and value for years to come.
