We investigated the effect of eugenol, capsaicin and lidocaine on the formalin test in mice. Eugenol, a phenolic derivative, chemically designated as 4-allyl-2-methoxy-phenol, commonly known as clove essence, as it is present in large quantities in the essential oil of cloves (Eugenia aromatica), at doses of 0.01; 0.1; 0.3; 1; 3 and 10 microg/site, administered intraplantarly, did not promote an increase in nociception compared to the control in the first phase of the test. In the formalin test, eugenol reduced nociception by 70.69% at a dose of 0.1 microg/site, suggesting its effect on pain of neurogenic origin by reversibly inhibiting nerve activity. Pre-treatment with capsazepine and a test to destroy afferent C fibers confirmed the action of eugenol on TRPV1 receptors, as eugenol did not reduce the nociception caused by formalin in either test. We conclude that eugenol in small doses does not increase nociception; it has a local antinociceptive effect, probably due to its inhibitory action on TRPV1 receptors; eugenol, capsaicin and lidocaine have a local antinociceptive effect in the first phase of the formalin test.

maps whose topological entropy is equal to zero (i.e., maps that have only cyeles of pe 2 riods 1,2,2 , ... ) are studied in detail and elassified. Various topological aspects of the dynamics of unimodal maps are studied in Chap ter 5. We analyze the distinctive features of the limiting behavior of trajectories of smooth maps. In particular, for some elasses of smooth maps, we establish theorems on the number of sinks and study the problem of existence of wandering intervals. In Chapter 6, for a broad elass of maps, we prove that almost all points (with respect to the Lebesgue measure) are attracted by the same sink. Our attention is mainly focused on the problem of existence of an invariant measure absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We also study the problem of Lyapunov stability of dynamical systems and determine the measures of repelling and attracting invariant sets. The problem of stability of separate trajectories under perturbations of maps and the problem of structural stability of dynamical systems as a whole are discussed in Chap ter 7. In Chapter 8, we study one-parameter families of maps. We analyze bifurcations of periodic trajectories and properties of the set of bifurcation values of the parameter, in eluding universal properties such as Feigenbaum universality.

Conservation and Biology of Small Populations

Conservation and Biology of Small Populations

This book explores the factors affecting the survival of small populations. As the human impact on Earth expands, populations of many wild species are being squeezed into smaller and smaller habitats. As a consequence, they face an increasing threat of extinction. National and international conservation groups rush to add these populations, species and sub-species to their existing endangered and threatened lists. In nations with strong conservation laws, listing often triggers elaborate plans to rescue declining populations and restore their habitats. The authors review these theoretical ideas, the existing data, and explore the question: how well do small and isolated populations actually perform? Their case study group is the song sparrows of Mandarte Island, British Columbia. This population is small enough and isolated enough so that all individuals can be uniquely marked and their survival and reproduction monitored over many generations. This is one of the strongest long-term ecological studies of a contained vertebrate population, now in its 31st year.

A deep and historical examination of how the political influence of women at the ballot box has shaped the course of war and peace. In the modern age, some parts of the world are experiencing a long peace. Nuclear weapons, capitalism and the widespread adoption of democratic institutions have been credited with fostering this relatively peaceful period. Yet, these accounts overlook one of the most dramatic transformations of the 20th century: the massive redistribution of political power as millions of women around the world won the right to vote. Through gripping history and careful reasoning, this book examines how the political influence of women at the ballot box has shaped war and peace. What would a world ruled by women look like? For more than a hundred years, conventional wisdom held that women's votes had little effect. That view is changing - it turns out that women voters had a profound effect on the world we know and in ways we hardly understand. A world ruled by women's voices is a world that is less willing to fall in love with war as a noble end in itself, less prone to lapse into violence for the sake of maintaining an image. In other words, it is the world we live in now, more so than we have ever realized.

In The New Testament In Its World acclaimed biblical scholar N. T. Wright draws on a lifetime of distinguished scholarship to provide a thorough overview of the New Testament for students, church leaders, and everyday Christians. Wright, along with prominent New Testament scholar Michael Bird, explores the history, literature, and theology of the New Testament with an emphasis on its relevance for Christians today. Beginning with an overview of how to read the New Testament, the authors then survey its historical background to orient readers to the world of Jesus and the early church. This is followed by an in-depth study of Jesus' inauguration of the kingdom of God through his life, ministry, death, and resurrection. The next section explores the life and theology of Paul, who continues to unfold the significance of Jesus' life and ministry, and applies these to the issues faced by the early churches. Wright and Bird survey all of Paul's letters, providing a compact commentary on each, while explaining contemporary scholarly discussions on Paul and his teachings. They then turn to the gospels, written after Paul's letters, followed by the general epistles and Revelation, explaining the background, critical issues, important teachings, and contemporary applications for each. This is followed by a description of how the New Testament came to be, guiding the reader through issues of textual criticism and canonization. A concluding section brings all of the previous threads together to encourage readers to consider how their personal story fits into the larger story of God's redemption narrated in the New Testament. Students of the New Testament will not only be equipped with all of the technical information needed to understand the New Testament today but will see it as one cohesive story in which they are invited to play a vital role through their own lives and circumstances.
