Deborah Sweet first fell in love with the wonders of the Forest of Dean and the River Wye on courting visits with her sweetheart, Charlie Ferneyhough, back in the 1970s. Since marrying and raising a family Deborah and Charlie have returned hundreds of times, canoeing down the river on summer days, walking miles down remote forest tracks, picnicking in the snow, watching and studying the rich wildlife and getting to know the very special people who live in this part of the English-Welsh border. The connections between communities and forests are complex and evolving, presenting challenges to forest managers, researchers, and communities themselves. Dependency on timber extraction and timber-related industries is no longer a universal characteristic of the forest community. Remoteness is also a less common feature, as technology, workforce mobility, tourism, and 'amenity migrants' increasingly connect rural to urban places. Forest Community Connections explores the responses of forest communities to a changing economy, changing federal policy, and concerns about forest health from both within and outside forest communities. Focusing primarily on the United States, the book examines the ways that social scientists work with communities-their role in facilitating social learning, informing policy decisions, and contributing to community well being. Bringing perspectives from sociology, anthropology, political science, and forestry, the authors review a range of management issues, including wildfire risk, forest restoration, labor force capacity, and the growing demand for a growing variety of forest goods and services. They examine the increasingly diverse aesthetic and cultural values that forest residents attribute to forests, the factors that contribute to strong and resilient connections between communities and forests, and consider a range of governance structures to positively influence the well being of forest communities and forests, including collaboration and community-based forestry.

The word penjing can be roughly translated from the Chinese as "potted scenery." It is the original, older form of the art of bonsai. Penjing aims to embody entire natural scenes within individual works. Penjing is sometimes described as Chinese landscape painting in three dimensions. It aims to make viewers feel as though they were really in nature, contemplating the ripples on the surface of a lake or sheltering from the sun in the shade of a tree. It is an art form that is still, yet full of dynamic energy, embodying the natural beauty of trees, stones, and water. The book gives detailed guidance and instruction to those who wish to create a vivid miniature landscape of their own. It also describes the creation process of several outstanding examples of forest penjing, with accompanying photographs from each stage of their “journey” towards completion.Meant for beginners and experts alike, the information and techniques outlined in this book can help sow the seed of a new love for penjing or to refine the craft of a seasoned penjing designer.

Forest McNeir (1875-1957) grew up at Smith Point on Galveston Bay in Chambers County, Texas. He actually drew the map we used for the book's cover, showing that world he grew up in. Forest McNeir was still boy when his father died. It fell to him to help take care of his his mother, grandmother, and little brother. Something he mostly did with his shotgun, hunting and selling the fowl they killed. Once they were both equipped, Forest and his brother Paschal were acknowledged far and wide as the equal of grown men when it came to putting dinner on the table. It wasn't just hunting. The McNeir boys took every opportunity to earn a buck and Forest tells us all about their business ventures in these pages.Forest went on to become a builder in Houston. Some of the houses he built are still standing in Houston's fine old neighborhoods. But he never gave up shooting. He won gold in trap shooting at the 1920 Olympics. He tells you all about that. (He was inducted into the Trap Shooting Hall of Fame posthumously.)
The fae snatch humans as playthings to torment. The Primrose steals them back. Vowing that no other family would endure the same fear and pain she felt when her older sister was snatched by the fae, Brigid puts on an empty-headed fa ade while she rescues humans in the shadowy guise of the Primrose, hero to humans, bane to the fae. Her only regret is that she can't tell the truth to Munch, the young man in the human realm who she's trying very hard not to fall in love with. Munch has a horrible nickname, an even more terrible full name, and the shadow of his heroic sister and five older brothers to overcome. It's rough being the little brother of the notorious Robin Hood and her merry band. His only consolation are the brief visits by Brigid, the messenger girl for the dashing fae hero the Primrose. When an entire village of humans are snatched by the fae in a single night, Munch jumps at the chance to go to the Fae Realm, pass a message to Brigid and through her to the Primrose, and finally get his chance to be a hero just like all his older siblings. But the Fae Realm is a dangerous place, especially for a human unbound to a fae or court like Munch. One wrong decision could spell disaster for Munch, Brigid, and the Primrose. Will this stolen bride's sister and Robin Hood's brother reveal the truth of their hearts before it's too late? Or will they, too, find themselves caught in the whims of fae willing to shed blood to get their darkest desires?Loosely inspired by The Scarlet Pimpernel, Forest of Scarlet is book one in a new fantasy romance / fantasy romantic comedy series of standalones featuring magic libraries, a whimsical and deadly fae realm, and crazy fae hijinks by bestselling author Tara Grayce
