Almost Something

Almost Something

Hanna Moon; Moffy Gathorne-Hardy

Hanna Moon found the best way to get published while she was still a student: by simply creating her own magazine, with a name that could be qualified as predestined: A Nice Magazine. With it, she was able to have all the freedom to make her own series, and to invite her friends. A whole tribe that gravitated around the prestigious school of fashion design, the Central Martins School, that she joined in the fashion design section to end up graduating in photography in 2014. For her first book, she returned to her country, to Seoul, but also to Daejon, her hometown, 150km south of the capital. Back to her roots, her family, and her friends. A dive into a country which remains mysterious for most people, despite its pop culture spreading around the world. Intimate photographs of everyday life, of a digital generation that still flirts with the values of the past! Digital memories displayed on her computer desk, memories of small moments that form recollections! Born in Daejon, Hanna Moon became interested in fashion and moved to Seoul for two years to study textile, before flying to London at the age of 22 as part of a one-year exchange, where she studied fashion communication and discovered photography, a topic of interest among many others. She will stay there while going back and forth to Korea. Assistant to Tyrone Lebon, she is quick to fly on her own. A noticed exhibition in 2019 at Somerset House in London, with Hong Kong artist Joyce Ng was a manifesto for Asian miscegenation. She is a regular contributor to magazines such as AnOther Magazine, British Vogue, Dazed, The Gentlewoman, i-D, M, and Re-Edition, and with brands such as Acne, Adidas, Gucci, Supreme, and Valentino.
Arctic Energy and Social Sustainability

Arctic Energy and Social Sustainability

Hanna Lempinen

Springer Nature Switzerland AG

In recent years the Arctic has become the focus of political, popular and scholarly debates around the future of our world’s Energy. Increasing consumption, dwindling reserves, climate warming and developing technologies are expected to push energy-related activities ever further into the previously inaccessible north. Within this framework, energy in the Arctic is predominantly understood as synonymous with oil and gas production for international exports; meanwhile, any social sustainability concerns associated with energy-related developments remain largely neglected or reduced to regional socioeconomic concerns.Lempinen adopts an alternative approach, exploring how energy and its societal aspects are defined and debated in the context of the circumpolar north. Combining an in-depth conceptual discussion on energy and the social dimension of sustainability with an empirical focus on the scientific and political “truths” produced about energy and society in the Arctic energyscape, this book is an enlightening read for students, scholars and professionals interested in issues related to energy and society in the Arctic or beyond.

Determinants of FDI in Central and Eastern Europe

Determinants of FDI in Central and Eastern Europe

Hanna Makhavikova

Springer Nature Switzerland AG

nidottu
This book provides a detailed examination of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) after closer integration in the European Union. An important facet of European economic integration was the development of a free-trade area in Central and Eastern Europe, which improved market accessibility. However, to date these relations have been little explored theoretically. The book examines foreign investments in different transition countries from both a theoretical and an empirical perspective. It analyzes changes in the choice of location by foreign investors in nineteen CEE countries between 1992 and 2015, and shows that it is linked to the removal of intra-regional trade barriers. The findings suggest that regional integration increases the incentives for multinationals to invest in the participating countries, especially in those with larger markets and lower production costs.
Illicit Markets, Organized Crime, and Global Security

Illicit Markets, Organized Crime, and Global Security

Hanna Samir Kassab; Jonathan D. Rosen

Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2019
nidottu
This book explains the existence of illicit markets throughout human history and provides recommendations to governments. Organized criminal networks increased in strength after the enforcement of prohibition, eventually challenging the authority of the state and its institutions through corruption and violence. Criminal networks now organize under cyber-infrastructure, what we call the Deep or Dark Web. The authors analyze how illicit markets come together, issues of destabilization and international security, the effect of legitimate enterprises crowded out of developing countries, and ultimately, illicit markets' cost to human life.
Public–Private Partnership for Sub-Saharan Africa

Public–Private Partnership for Sub-Saharan Africa

Hanna Kociemska

Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2019
sidottu
This monograph highlights the benefits of public-private partnerships (PPP) for Sub-Saharan Africa. By studying the intertwinement of mainstream and Islamic finance, the author shows how PPPs have emerged as a viable and efficient organizational vehicle for fair rules of economic cooperation where the trade-offs between profit maximization and social justice values required by Islamic finance occur within the organization. The book shows the assumptions under which such compromise is beneficial to all parties, including public entities, multicultural societies and private Islamic and conventional investors. It places particular emphasis on changing the principle of allocating public resources in the uncertain legal and economic environment of the region discussed. Given the cultural idiosyncrasies, political instability, and socio-economic turmoil but high development potential in Sub-Saharan Africa, PPPs with a heterodox approach may prove to be a game-changer in the region and a platform to find a compromise between the interests of various types of investors.
Linguistic Intermarriage in Australia

Linguistic Intermarriage in Australia

Hanna Irving Torsh

Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2019
sidottu
This book examines the experiences of couples with different language backgrounds and different cultural origins as they negotiate love, partnership and parenting. It is based on the author’s doctoral research into the attitudes and experiences of the English-speaking background (ESB) partners of non-English-speaking background (NESB) migrants in Sydney, Australia. In particular, it seeks to understand how these English speakers negotiate being in a romantic relationship with someone who has a different first language. It explores how those from an ESB reconcile the negative perspectives of Anglophone culture towards “other” languages, with their desire to be a good partner who respects the linguistic differences in their relationship. The book is organised into six chapters, which move from a focus on the language of the individual, to the languages of the couple, and then to the wider family. The main finding is that although ESB partners had very different beliefs and attitudes towards language learning to their migrant partners, they attempted to compensate for these differences in various ways. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars in the fields of language education, minority languages, and language policy and planning.
Sustainable Investing

Sustainable Investing

Hanna Silvola; Tiina Landau

Springer Nature Switzerland AG
2021
sidottu
This book reviews the latest methods of sustainable investing and financial profit making and describes how ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) analysis can identify future business opportunities and manage risk to achieve abnormal returns. Megatrends such as climate change, sustainable development and digitalisation increase uncertainty and information asymmetry and have an impact on the future returns on investments. From a profit perspective, it is largely about how ESG factors affect the long-term value added by companies and the valuation of companies in the financial markets. Although sustainability provides an opportunity for abnormal returns, this phenomenon must be considered in a critical light. The book describes the risks and limitations associated with the accountability and availability of ESG data and tools. This book provides both academic findings and practical models for assessing the sustainability of investees and introduces practical tools andmethods to make ESG analysis practice. It focuses on the ESG analysis of equity investments and fund investments in institutional investment organizations and provides a handbook for all investment analysts who are involved with investment decisions. Readers will benefit from understanding the methods, opportunities and challenges that professionals use in their ESG analysis with cases, interviews and practical tools for both institutional and private investors.

Over the last few years, we have witnessed an upsurge of enthusiasm about cryptocurrencies and, more generally, the so-called blockchain technology. In this new and updated edition, the authors explore what exactly these new technologies entail and promise. They argue that to understand the potential challenges and further developments in the market, one needs to develop an understanding of what needs these innovations fulfill and what business models are consistent with their use. For that, we need to sufficiently understand both the technology and how it affects the economic forces at play. This book goes beyond the headlines that say “blockchain will decentralize everything” and provides in-depth, rigorous analysis of what can be effectively decentralized and how this decentralization will work. The book draws not only on the general knowledge of digital currencies and blockchain technologies, but also on recent academic research on the topic. Featuring a fully updated chapteron cryptocurrencies and new chapters on smart contracts and enterprise blockchains, this book is critical reading for those interested in how technology developments impact business and society.

This book addresses a wide range of issues situated in the core of theoreticians’ and clinicians’ work in the field of giftedness. It gathers practical issues, relevant for the lives of many gifted children, adolescents and adults, from a neuropsychological point of view. By studying the basic questions in gifted education through a neuropsychological lens, this book aims to establish a uniform new way for the treatment of gifted children with social or emotional difficulties, learning disabilities, physical limitations, or psychological and psychiatric disorders. This book helps educators and mental-health professionals to obtain a deeper understanding of the neurological system and its role in learning. This includes memory, knowledge-processing, making connections, and the implications on the cognitive, emotional, and physical aspects – all of which play major roles in the life of each gifted child and adolescent. By acquiring this new knowledge, more teachers, counsellors, psychologists and psychiatrists will be able to help individuals materialize their giftedness, while preserving their mental health and productivity.
