Transcription: the Afterlife Debate with Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, David Wolpe, Bradley Shavit Artson
Featuring Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, David Wolpe, and Bradley Shavit Artson, and moderated by Rob Eshman, this debate about whether there is an afterlife took place in Los Angeles, California, USA, on 15 February 2011. Having found no transcripts of this debate online, I decided in March 2012 to transcribe it verbatim myself. This task was completed six months later in September 2012. In response to popular demand, I have compiled my transcript of the discussion in a soft-bound, 53-page, A5-size book. There is more than one YouTube video of this debate online; the one I used is just over 1 hour and 37 minutes long, had over 160,000 views in February 2014, and is available at the following web address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjKJ92b9Y04 (Accessed February 2014). I have entitled my transcript: 'Transcription: The Afterlife Debate with Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, David Wolpe, Bradley Shavit Artson' by Catherine O'Brien.
Gabriel Tolliver, a story of reconstruction (1902). By: Joel Chandler Harris: to James Whitcomb Riley (October 7, 1849 - July 22, 1916) was an America
Joel Chandler Harris (December 9, 1848 - July 3, 1908) was an American journalist, fiction writer, and folklorist best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. Harris was born in Eatonton, Georgia, where he served as an apprentice on a plantation during his teenage years. He spent the majority of his adult life in Atlanta working as an associate editor at the Atlanta Constitution. Harris led two professional lives: as the editor and journalist known as Joe Harris, he supported a vision of the New South with the editor Henry W. Grady (1880-1889), stressing regional and racial reconciliation after the Reconstruction era. As Joel Chandler Harris, fiction writer and folklorist, he wrote many 'Brer Rabbit' stories from the African-American oral tradition and helped to revolutionize literature in the process.Harris created the first version of the Uncle Remus character for the Atlanta Constitution in 1876 after inheriting a column formerly written by Samuel W. Small, who had taken leave from the paper. In these character sketches, Remus would visit the newspaper office to discuss the social and racial issues of the day. By 1877 Small had returned to the Constitution and resumed his column. Harris did not intend to continue the Remus character. But when Small left the paper again, Harris reprised Remus. He realized the literary value of the stories he had heard from the slaves of Turnwold Plantation. Harris set out to record the stories and insisted that they be verified by two independent sources before he would publish them. He found the research more difficult given his professional duties, urban location, race and, eventually, fame. 13] On July 20, 1879, Harris published "The Story of Mr. Rabbit and Mr. Fox as Told by Uncle Remus" in the Atlanta Constitution. It was the first of 34 plantation fables that would be compiled in Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings (1880). The stories, mostly collected directly from the African-American oral storytelling tradition, were revolutionary in their use of dialect, animal personages, and serialized landscapes. The Uncle Remus stories garnered critical acclaim and achieved popular success well into the 20th century. Harris published at least twenty-nine books, of which nine books were compiled of his published Uncle Remus stories, including Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings (1880), Nights with Uncle Remus (1883), Uncle Remus and His Friends (1892), The Tar Baby and Other Rhymes of Uncle Remus (1904), Told by Uncle Remus: New Stories of the Old Plantation (1905), Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit (1907). The last three books written by Joel Chandler Harris were published after his death which included Uncle Remus and the Little Boy (1910), Uncle Remus Returns (1918), and Seven Tales of Uncle Remus (1948). The tales, 185 in sum, became immensely popular among both black and white readers in the North and South. Few people outside of the South had heard accents like those spoken in the tales, and the dialect had never been legitimately and faithfully recorded in print. To Northern and international readers, the stories were a "revelation of the unknown."Mark Twain noted in 1883, "in the matter of writing the African-American dialect], he is the only master the country has produced.".. James Whitcomb Riley (October 7, 1849 - July 22, 1916) was an American writer, poet, and best-selling author. During his lifetime he was known as the "Hoosier Poet" and "Children's Poet" for his dialect works and his children's poetry respectively. His poems tended to be humorous or sentimental, and of the approximately one thousand poems that Riley authored, the majority are in dialect. His famous works include "Little Orphant Annie" and "The Raggedy Man".

This volume presents the site of Northton in the Western Isles of Scotland (at Toe Head on Harris). During excavations in 1965 and 1966 two early horizons were identified beneath and close to the base of the machair sands. With excavation the stratigraphically later of these horizons furnished evidence for a probable stone structure, funerary and faunal remains, and an abundance of artefacts, particularly pottery, which in turn dated the horizon to the Neolithic period. In contrast, the lower horizon lay directly above the natural boulder clay, was sealed by the machair sands, and contained a general paucity of faunal and artefactual remains. Due to the discovery of one small sherd of Neolithic pottery it was assumed, however, that this horizon might represent an earlier phase of Neolithic occupation. During a brief season of fieldwork in 2001 a seemingly comparable horizon, which also rested above the boulder clay, was identified in a section which had been exposed through coastal erosion.Following a limited investigation this basal horizon produced evidence for human activity in the form of possible stone settings, charred plant macrofossils, faunal remains and a small assemblage of chipped stone artefacts. Significantly, a series of dates obtained from the plant macrofossils indicate that this material is unambiguously of the Mesolithic period. Whilst these somewhat unexpected results have major implications for constructing the internal chronology of the site, as they appear to extend human activity at Northton back to the seventh millennium cal. BC, they are also of considerable interest at both a regional and national level, as they may represent the first direct evidence for Mesolithic activity in the Western Isles. The volume has chapters on the sites early occupation, the Beaker period, Bronze, Iron, and later periods, and a history of the Northton Machair. There are six Appendices and Catalogues of finds and data.
Political Power: Democrats 2: Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
President Donald J. Trump's tenure focused the American electorate on politics in ways not seen in modern history. During this tumultuous four-year period, four Democrats rose from the left to challenge the right's policies. The movers: Joe Biden has had one of the most challenging journeys in American politics, facing an emotional roller coaster to become America's youngest Congress member and, eventually, the 46th President of the United States. His running mate, Kamala Harris, has devoted herself to bettering her constituents' lives while focusing on social issues that help minorities and women. Her no-nonsense approach and bi-racial heritage have made her the face of the Democrat party and the nation's first female Vice President. The shakers: The youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress, few politicians have captured the electorate's attention like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Unafraid to buck the system to serve as the voice of her generation, her surprise defeat of Joe Crowley of New York is considered the 2018 election cycle's defining moment. Pete Buttigieg, a polyglot, knows eight languages. After graduating from Harvard and studying as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, Pete became the nation's youngest mayor and the first openly gay candidate for President of the United States. Written by Michael Frizell and Wey-Yuih Loh, and featuring art by Dave Ryan, Juan Burgos, Jonathan Rector, Juan Jose' Pereyra, J. Travis Smith, and Cornerstone Creative Studios, Political Power: Democrats Volume 2 is a must-read as a new era of American governance begins. Featuring a "Super Friends" homage cover by famed comic book artist Bill Walko. The comic book series has been featured on CNN
