James K. Polk, Vol 1. Jacksonian

James K. Polk, Vol 1. Jacksonian

Charles Grier Sellers

This full account is of Polk's important pre-presidential career. Since Polk was immersed in so many of the major political developments of his day-the rise of popular democracy, the conflicts over the national bank and other crucial issues of Jackson's administrations, and after 1835 the fateful emergence of sectional animosities-his biography is also a history of his generation's political experience. Professor Sellers has combined the elements with a sure hand, bringing out Polk's character-his ambition, his determination, his faith in the electorate-and the nature of his friends, his enemies, and the times in which he moved. One feature of the work is the light it throws on the relation between national politics and those in Tennessee. Originally published in 1957. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

This definitive biography of James K. Polk, the second of three projected volumes, covers the most important years of Polk's political career-from a twice-defeated gubernatorial candidate in Tennessee to dark-horse candidate for the presidency and one of the most successful first eighteen months of any American president. The months of Polk's administration covered here contain the bulk of his expansionist program-the annexation of Texas, the settlement of the Oregon boundary with Great Britain, and the war with Mexico that led to the acquisition of California and New Mexico. This period also covers the first session of the 29th Congress, which produced under Polk's guidance the most important domestic legislation of any Congress of the century. Originally published in 1966. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Ronald James Padavona began playing music in 1950s doo whop bands as a bass and trumpet player. He eventually found his voice, changed his name and took command of the microphone. And thus a rock 'n' roll legend was born. During a career that spanned six decades Ronnie fronted such legendary bands as Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven & Hell. Along the way he shared the stage with some of rock 'n' roll's most renowned players like Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Vivian Campbell and Vinny Appice. In the 1980s Ronnie rose to superstardom with classic albums like Holy Diver, Last in Line and Sacred Heart. With his medieval-laden lyrics, powerful vocals and larger than life stage shows he gained legions of adoring fans and was loved the world over. By the 2000s he had become an elder statesman and a full-fledged heavy metal icon. This book chronicles Ronnie's life from his humble beginnings in Cortland, New York, up to his time in Heaven & Hell and his eventual passing in 2010. In the book you will get a glimpse into the life, music and passions of one of heavy metal's all-time greatest singers. James Hanley

James Hanley (1901-1985) was brought up in Liverpool and worked as a merchant seaman before becoming a professional writer. The first of his twenty-four novels, Drift, was published in 1930. In this wide-ranging study of Hanley's life and writings, John Fordham argues that, although Hanley's work is most commonly identified with 'proletarian' realism, it should instead be thought of as a sustained engagement with modernism. Fordham discusses Hanley's relationship to London and the institutional culture of high modernism, as well as his association with his adopted country, Wales, where he lived for more than thirty years and which figures so importantly in his imagination. Through a close analysis of Hanley's writing and the social and cultural contexts of his work, Fordham demonstrates the importance of the category of class for understanding the literary history of modernism and shows how Hanley's work reveals the conflicting and contradictory aspects of modernist culture. James Hanley: Modernism and the Working Class is a ground-breaking analysis of this significant but neglected writer whose work opens the way to a new understanding of twentieth-century working-class writing.
