The Akan Doctrine of God

The Akan Doctrine of God

J.B. Danquah

Routledge
1968
sidottu
First Published in 1968. Danquah's desire with this title is to expound Akan thought in such a way as to make it comprehensible to western thinkers and to demonstrate that it is comparable to their system. In pursuance of this objective, he calls forth his philosophical training and indulges in metaphysical and ethical speculation. The effects of this are evident in the whole book, whether in his discussion of the nature of the supreme Being or in his exposition of Akan ethical thought.

This early material consists of poems which have a certain amount of adolescent angst and concerns for the future, together with social observations which are still relevant today. Although some may be rather dark, they reflect the frame of mind of someone in their early twenties trying to find their way in life with all its harsh realities. There are still, however, moments to appreciate the nicer things in life, and hopefully other poems in the volume will raise the spirit and be of more cheer. Inspiration for the collection came from such avenues as being unemployed in a recession, unrequited love, war, friendship and social interaction.

This second volume continues with poems written in the 1980s, when in my twenties. The adolescent angst continues; however, thankfully, the love is no longer unrequited, as during this time I began courting my wife-to-be, Gillian. Views on the world around me, whether optimistic or melancholy, still feature prominently. J. B. Dundee

With the exception of 'Prelude to a Storm', Volume III contains my first collection of poems written after taking early retirement in 2016. As I am no longer a young man, I now display a certain amount of middle-aged angst and concerns for a shorter future. Having holidayed many times in the Highlands of Scotland, more works have been inspired by happy days spent there. My enthusiasm for listening to music and savouring single malt Scottish whiskey (often at the same time), has also been of some inspiration, including one poem in honour of a beloved distillery and another dedicated to my favourite Neil Diamond album. The human condition comes in for some consideration in the poems dealing with manic depression and man's destructive nature. In this volume I make my first poetic reference to my lifelong interest (minus anorak and Thermos) in steam locomotives and UK railways. Time on my hands has encouraged many hours of walking and enjoying the countryside. This has resulted in additional poems about the natural world. Subjects range from the weather and pleasant views to simple individual flora and fauna which have caught my eye. J. B. Dundee

Sixty poems with an eclectic mix, from soul-searching to the pleasure of warming in front of a coal fire; from a bat flying in the twilight, to the arrival of a steam train on the East Lancashire Railway. Self-deprecation is thrown in for good measure, including a piece acknowledging my curse of snoring. Whilst on holiday, a cockerel found itself immortalised in verse (and almost throttled), after waking me up every morning at dawn. Notions of mortality are never far away, however that is offset by the first reference in verse to being a grandparent - a real game-changer. It not only brings great delight into my life, but also more concerns. My other half continues to inspire poems and therefore features again in this volume. Nature as always is a constant source of material and never disappoints. The ever-changing weather and its interaction with the countryside will by no means cease to stimulate.

The usual suspects gather. The splendour of the natural world surrounding it cannot fail to inspire. Changing seasons bring varying outlooks. Whether in the wilderness or just looking upon the garden.Family interactions feature in this collection, some from the view of a son, some of a father. Situations which may strike a chord with others. The effort of keeping surplus weight off, especially after working hard to shift it, in the first place is always a challenge and prompted a few indifferent verses. This volume includes a homage to the American comedy drama M.A.S.H, a programme I have to acknowledge as shaping my sense of humour, whilst I watched it throughout childhood and teenage.Social comment has again managed to squeeze itself in. There is always something going on in society that gets under my skin at some point, whether it be people driving like idiots or those unfortunate souls who have bad neighbours.J. B. Dundee

Once more the Scottish Highlands feature, including one about the dreaded midge, the bane of the tourist. It never ceases to surprise me where the inspiration may come from; such as hiccups for example. Even a nasty bout of food poisoning ended up with the writing of eight verses... once I had recovered of course. Not being a fan of hot humid weather, the blistering summer of 2018 did not pass without comment or much sweating.Observations are made regarding life and politics in the UK and the tragic fate of a young American missionary.Getting ever older is still a source of inspiration and annoyance in equal measure, but my better half will yet again give me cause for celebration.Every year people are savaged and sometimes killed by dogs which have turned feral for no apparent reason. Often the dogs are aggressive 'fighting' breeds. This subject and the need for such breeds is explored.

City-County Consolidation and Its Alternatives: Reshaping the Local Government Landscape
City-country consolidation builds upon the Progressive tradition of favoring structural reform of local governments. This volume looks at some important issues confronting contemporary efforts to consolidate governments and develops a theoretical approach to understanding both the motivations for pursuing consolidation and the way the rules guiding the process shape the outcome. Individual chapters consider the push for city-county consolidation and the current context in which such decisions are debated, along with several alternatives to city-county consolidation. The transaction costs of city-county consolidation are compared against the costs of municipal annexation, inter-local agreements, and the use of special district governments to achieve the desired consolidation of services. The final chapters compare competing perspectives for and against consolidation and put together some of the pieces of an explanatory theory of local government consolidation.

Teaching Mathematics in Multilingual Classrooms
Increasingly, teachers all over the world are grappling on a daily basis with the fact of multilingual classrooms. In this book, Jill Adler captures three inter-related dilemmas that lie at the heart of teaching mathematics in multilingual classrooms. Adler's identification and naming of the dilemma of code-switching, the dilemma of mediation, and the dilemma of transparency, arise from exploring the realities of actual classrooms, and are shaped by a perspective of teaching as a social practice. Adler provides a sharp analysis and strong theoretical grounding for her work, pulling together research related to the relationship between language and mathematics, communicating mathematics, and mathematics in bi-/multilingual settings. In so doing, she offers a direct challenge to dominant research on communication in mathematics classrooms that has `othered' the multilingual setting in its normalisation of the monolingual classroom. The `norm' is a multicultural one. Set in contemporary South Africa - a context of linguistic diversity and rapid change - this book offers a spotlight whose beam is wide enough to illuminate dilemmas at work in all mathematics classrooms.

J.-B. Pontalis

At once a memoir and a personal version of the author's highly influential Language of Psychoanalysis, this work by one of the world's leading proponents of psychoanalytic theory and practice offers an autobiographical perspective on the private "vocabularies" that develop between analyst and patient. Because our ways of understanding the world are mediated by our use of language, J.-B. Pontalis suggests that a close look at our private lexicon can uncover a great deal about what we value. Beginning with one of his own linguistic preoccupations, the metaphor of the window, Pontalis considers language as a vehicle for both self-awareness and self-deception; he explores how we choose or eschew certain words to create our life-stories and demonstrates how these words conceal--and reveal--our most intimate preoccupations and desires. J.-B. Pontalis is a psychoanalyst and the author of many books, including The Language of Psychoanalysis, with Jean Laplanche. Pontalis was the founder of La Nouvelle Revue de Psychanalyse and served as the journal's editor from 1970 to 1984, and he won the 2001 Mary S. Sigourney Prize for his outstanding contribution to psychoanalysis. Anne Quinney is an assistant professor of French at the University of Mississippi.
