"One of the most adorable, big-hearted, charming books in existence." --Becky Albertalli, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda What If It's Us meets To All the Boys I've Loved Before in this upbeat and heartfelt boy-meets-boy romance that feels like a modern twist on a '90s rom-com Everyone knows about the dare: Each week, Bryson Keller must date someone new--the first person to ask him out on Monday morning. But Kai Sheridan never expected Bryson to say yes to him. As the days go by, he discovers there's more to Bryson beneath the surface, and dating him begins to feel less like an act and more like the real thing. Kai knows how the story of a gay boy liking someone straight ends. With his heart on the line, he's awkwardly trying to navigate senior year at school, at home, and in the closet, all while grappling with the fact that this "relationship" will last only five days. After all, Bryson Keller is popular, good-looking, and straight . . . right? Drawing on his own experiences, Kevin van Whye delivers an uplifting and poignant coming-out love story. Readers will root for Kai and Bryson to share their hearts with the world--and with each other.
The Harvard-educated, Jewish American philosopher Horace Meyer Kallen (1882-1974) is commonly credited with the concept of cultural pluralism, which envisioned immigrant and minority groups cultivating their distinctive social worlds and interacting to create an inclusive, ever-changing true American culture. Though living and teaching in Madison, Wisconsin, when he developed this influential theory, Kallen's seven-year sojourn in the Midwest (1911-1918) rarely figures in accounts of the theory's origins. And yet, Michael C. Steiner suggests, the Midwest, far from being a mere interruption in Kallen's thought, was in fact the essential catalyst for the theory of cultural pluralism, a concept that continues to shape public debate a century later. The Midwest in the first decades of the twentieth century was a youthful region experiencing massive immigration and the xenophobic fervor of approaching war. In this milieu Steiner locates a pervasive pluralist zeitgeist rife with urban- and rural-based intellectuals and public figures deeply critical of both the all-absorbing melting pot ideology and white racist Anglo-Saxon exclusionism. Early proponents of diversity who interacted with Kallen to forge a pluralist sensibility and ideology as the Midwest was becoming the nation's dominant region included public figures Hamlin Garland, Frederick Jackson Turner, and Jane Addams; African American activists Reverdy Ransom and Ida B. Wells; Norwegian American writers Ole E. RØlvaag and Waldemar Ager; and intellectuals Randolph Bourne and John Dewey. Tracing how Kallen's interaction with these figures and his regional experience expanded his vision and added the final touch and crucial spatial dimension to his theory, Horace M. Kallen in the Heartland enhances our understanding of cultural pluralism. The book has direct bearing on the present, as once again denunciation of diversity and mass migration challenge the tenets and advocates of pluralism.
Helen's Big World: The Life of Helen Keller

This "magnificent account" (New York Times) of Helen Keller's life presents a moving portrait of one of the world's great luminaries. When Helen was nineteen months old, an illness left her unable to see or speak. She struggled to make herself understood, and often lashed out when she couldn't. With the help of a teacher named Annie Sullivan, she learned to spell words with her fingers, opening her world immeasurably. She soon learned to write and to read Braille, and even to read lips by touch; with Annie by her side, she went to college, and wrote an autobiography that shared her story with the world. She was lauded as a genius and became an advocate for people with disabilities, workers' rights, women's rights, and racial justice. With her signature style of accessible prose laced with stirring quotes, Doreen Rappaport brings to life Helen Keller's poignant narrative in this addition to the Big Words series of picture book biographies. Acclaimed illustrator Matt Tavares beautifully captures the dynamism and verve of Helen's life and legacy, making Helen's Big World an unforgettable portrait of a woman whose vision for innovation and progress changed America--and the world--forever. ★ "Stirring and awe-inspiring." --The Horn Book ★ "While there are many books available about Helen Keller for this age group, this title offers a unique and beautiful perspective on her life." --School Library Journal "No child could read this book without imagining herself, as Helen put it, 'in the still, dark world in which I lived.' But it makes Helen's path to self-expression all the more resonant and inspiring." --New York Times "A worthwhile addition to biography shelves." --Booklist Don't miss these other titles in the Big Words series Ellen Takes Flight: The Life of Astronaut Ellen Ochoa Ruth Objects: The Life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg Wilma's Way Home: The Life of Wilma Mankiller Abe's Honest Words: The Life of Abraham Lincoln Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
