Geotechnical Design to Eurocode 7

Geotechnical Design to Eurocode 7

Trevor L.L. Orr; Eric R. Farrell

Springer London Ltd
2011
nidottu
The purpose of this book is to explain the philosophy set out in Eurocode 7, the new European code of practice for geotechnical design, and, by means of series of typical examples, to show how this philosophy is used in practice. This book is aimed at: • practising engineers, to assist them to carry out geotechnical designs to Eurocode 7 using the limit state design method and partial factors; • lecturers and students on courses where design to Eurocode 7 is being taught. It is envisaged that practising engineers, using this book to assist them carry out geotechnical designs to Eurocode 7, will have access to the prestandard version of Eurocode 7, ENV 1997 -I, so the authors have concentrated on the main principles and have not provided a commentary on all the clauses. However sufficient detail has been included in the book to enable it to be used on its own by those learning the design principles who may not have access to Eurocode 7. For example, the values of the partial factors and the principal equations given in Eurocode 7 have been included and these are used in the design examples in this book. To assist the reader, the numbering, layout and titles of the chapters closely follow those presented in Eurocode 7.

"Gracious Wild" is the story of Stacey Couch's incredible journey out of the mundane world of science and reason into the vast shamanic realms of creativity and inspiration. Readers will travel on this intimate exploration of what happens when one woman allows the messengers of nature to guide her. These winged guides wrap her mind up in the mysteries they present, leading her to a richer, more fulfilling life.Stacey's tale begins on an isolated island where, as a scientist, her main responsibility is to care for a couple dozen foxes in captivity. As a result of a series of ecological tragedies, the fox population is on the verge of extinction and a novel hawk species begins nesting on the island for the first time in recorded history. It is during her time watching the nesting hawks alone in nature that her real quest begins-a series of hawks become her guides; rousing life's biggest questions like "why am I here?""Gracious Wild" weaves Stacey's relationship with the hawks alongside her study of shamanism with a good deal of information included for those seeking more details about this spiritual path.Stacey's belief is, "that wild animals are trying to speak and interact with us every day. To listen to them is to listen to that which is divine within each of us. Their calls mirror our own inner calling to a greater purpose.""Gracious Wild" offers a vivid and candid tale of a woman who loses then rewrites the meaning of her life at the same time showing readers their own humanity; how being open to spirit messages from animals can provide important and beneficial (life-changing) guidance.

At the time of his death at Zoo Atlanta in 2000, Willie B. was arguably the most famous gorilla in the world. Locally, he was an icon with more than 8,000 people in attendance at his memorial service conducted by Atlanta's Mayor, Reverend Andrew Young. Zoo Atlanta's reform President/CEO, Georgia Tech Professor Terry Maple, was responsible for Willie B.'s transformation into a successful silverback. In a phrase, Professor Maple freed Willie B. to live in an urban Eden, the Ford African Rain Forest exhibit where he sired five off spring. His extraordinary story is described in this fascinating biography of his life. The story of Willie B. is a metaphor for the Zoo Atlanta story, an institution that evolved from an industry pariah to become one of America's most innovative zoological parks. It is also Terry Maple's history of his eighteen years rebuilding the zoo and directing one of the most important behavioral research programs in the world. Because Maple and his students studied the zoo's metamorphosis in detail, it is the most documented recovery of a failed nonprofit in the nation's history. Zoo Atlanta has become a model for other zoos that have adopted a nonprofit governance model. The reproductive record of the Ford African Rain Forest was acknowledged by the presentation of a prestigious Edward H. Bean Award for gorilla conservation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The evolution of naturalistic zoo exhibits is thoroughly documented in Professor Maple's comprehensive account.
