An Undercurrent of Jitters

An Undercurrent of Jitters

Carol Levin

"Carol Levin's An Undercurrent of Jitters is a book of poems about weddings and marriages, whether longed for or forced or joyfully jumped into, whether failed or extremely happy. The poems are engaging, insightful, and well-wrought--a joy to read." --Priscilla Long, author of Crossing Over: Poems "The 'undercurrent of jitters' serving as Carol Levin's title belongs to strangers at a USO dance in Texas shortly before the young men leave for war. Two of these strangers become a couple and join the confluences of encounters, indelible moments, narratives, and palpable atmospheres characterizing the complex terrain of marriage. Peaks and troughs as well as nerves beneath the surface of the poems illuminate the how and why, and sometimes the confusion, of intention and commitment. Levin's attuned eye and ear navigate unfolding explorations leading back, forward, or within myriad instances relating to wedlock. These poems comprise a mosaic of inlaid particulars alive with authentic memorable human resonances." --Joan Fiset, author of Namesake

Amnon Weinstein, an Israeli master luthier (violin maker), began a project more than years ago that may be one of the most creative, effective, and magnificent approaches to education on the topic of the Holocaust. Trained by three of the most revered Cremona, Italian luthiers of the twentieth century, Weinstein’s vision was to restore violins that survived the concentration camps and the ghettos, even when their owners often did not. To date, more than seventy violins have been restored to their highest playable condition. Following restoration, these hauntingly beautiful instruments have been used in performances by symphonies in Berlin, Cleveland, Istanbul, London, Quebec, Paris, San Francisco, and many other cities across the world. Purposefully, Weinstein makes certain that young musicians as well as members of some of the world’s most famed orchestras perform on them to packed concert halls. In doing so, it’s as if the past owners of the instruments return to fill the listener-observer’s mind and body. In Violins and Hope, Daniel Levin has made the most compelling and beautiful series of photographs documenting Weinstein’s collection of violins, his workshop in Tel Aviv, and his processes for restoration. This book is not a document of place, as much as it is a document of the ethereal. For what Weinstein has done with these lost violins has been to transform tragic loss into triumph in the most inciteful and powerful way imaginable. The care that Levin has taken to hone in on the idiosyncrasies of Amnon’s workshop, and his uncanny ability to celebrate the beauty of light, is nothing short of remarkable. The book’s foreword is written by arguably the most well-suited individual anywhere. Born in Austria, Franz Welser-Möst is one of the most acclaimed conductors of the twenty-first century. He has been Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra since 2002, and, under his direction, The Cleveland, as it has been fondly named by The New York Times, has had twenty international tours, with shimmering reviews. All too aware of his ancestry, Welser-Möst takes on our mutual history as no one else could. And the book concludes with Levin’s interview with Assi Weinstein, Amnon’s wife, who talks about the Violins of Hope project and its enduring legacy.

Judd Steiner and Artie Straus have it all: wealth, intelligence, and the world at their feet as part of the elite, upper-crust Jewish community of 1920s Chicago. Artie is handsome, athletic, and popular, but he possesses a hidden, powerful sadistic streak and a desire to dominate. Judd is a weedy introvert, a genius who longs for a companion whom he can idolize and worship. Obsessed with Nietzsche's idea of the superhuman, both boys decide to prove that they are above the laws of man by arbitrarily picking and murdering a Jewish boy in their neighborhood. This new edition of Meyer Levin's classic literary thriller Compulsion reintroduces the fictionalized case of Leopold and Loeb -- once considered the "crime of the century" -- to a new generation. This incisive psychological portrait of two young murderers seized the imagination of an era and is generally recognized as paving the way for the first non-fiction novel. Compulsion forces us to ask what drives some further into darkness, and some to seek redemption. Heartbreaking as it is gripping, Compulsion is written with a tense and penetrating force that led the Los Angeles Times to call Levin, "the most significant Jewish writer of his times."

Shakespeare's Changeling

"Kline keeps the pages turning... a lively interpretation that will win Oxfordian approval and may even convince Stratfordians to suspend disbelief and enjoy it." --Kirkus Reviews FIRST PLACE WINNER 2014 CHAUCER AWARD FOR HISTORICAL FICTION IN ELIZABETHAN/TUDOR CATEGORYCharged in 1616 by the Earls of Pembroke and Montgomery to edit a folio of Shakespeare plays, writer Ben Jonson races against time to uncover the missing manuscripts by seeking out his former nemesis, the bedridden William Shaxper. But far more worrisome is that the Earl of Oxford's daughter, the Countess of Montgomery, wants the folio published as a tribute to her father. Could Lord Oxford's darkest secrets threaten the throne of King James? Witty, intriguing and suspenseful, Syril Levin Kline's controversial novel calls into question everything you ever thought you knew about the Bard by exploring the irony of a creative genius forced to hide behind the identity of another. Kline proudly joins Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, James Joyce, Charles Dickens and other writers in their skepticism about the Shakespeare authorship. As fascinating as it is entertaining and deftly written, Shakespeare's Changeling: A Fault Against the Dead offers the most reasonable solution to the authorship mystery ever presented.
The Instructions: 13th Anniversary Bar Mitzvah Edition
Beginning with a chance encounter with the beautiful Eliza June Watermark and ending, four days and 900 pages later, with the Events of November 17, this is the story of Gurion Maccabee, age ten: a lover, a fighter, a scholar, and a truly spectacular talker. Ejected from three Jewish day schools for acts of violence and messianic tendencies, Gurion ends up in the Cage, a special lockdown program for the most hopeless cases of Aptakisic Junior High. Separated from his scholarly followers, Gurion becomes a leader of a very different sort, with righteous aims building to a revolution of troubling intensity. The Instructions is an absolutely singular work of fiction by an important new talent. Adam Levin has shaped a world driven equally by moral fervor and slapstick comedy-a novel that is muscular and verbose, troubling and empathetic, monumental, breakneck, romantic, and unforgettable. Thirteen years after its original publication, McSweeney's is releasing this special, two paperback edition of Levin's beloved novel which continues to find new readers each year.
