The Junior League of Willow Creek, Texas, is tr s exclusive. Undesirables need not apply. Fredericka Mercedes Hildebrand Ware (Frede to her friends) is a member beyond reproach...until her life begins to unravel. When her husband betrays her, steals her money, and runs off to places unknown, it's something Frede would prefer to keep under wraps. The last thing she needs is to become fodder for the JLWC gossip mill. And to make matters worse, there's only one person in town who stands a chance at helping her get revenge--Howard Grout, a tasteless, gold-chain-wearing lawyer who has bought his way into Frede's tony neighborhood. But there's a price: She has to get his tacky, four-inch-stiletto-and-pink-spandex-wearing wife, Nikki, into the Junior League. The cr me de la cr me of Southern royalty should sit up and take notice, and hang on tight for this irresistible tale of getting in and getting even.

But now, Carlisle has been lured back to Texas to deal with her mother's latest divorce and the family-sponsored 100th annual debutante ball, which is on the verge of collapse. She's afraid she'll never get back to Boston, at least with her reputation intact, especially when good 'ole Southern boy Jack Blair shows up on the opposite side of the divorce court, making her wonder if he's going after her mother in the proceedings--or her. Carlisle's trip home challenges her sense of who she really is and forces her to face her family's secrets. Funny, smart, and poignant, The Ex-Debutante is a story about the risks one woman must take if she stands a chance of finding herself, real love, and her place in that crazy thing we call family.

The Myth of Bloody Mary: A Biography of Queen Mary I of England
It is the tragedy of Queen Mary that today, 450 years after her death, she remains the most hated, least understood monarch in English history--remembered best for burning hundreds of Protestant heretics at the stake. Linda Porter's pioneering new biography cuts through the myths to reveal the truth about the first queen to rule England in her own right. Daughter of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon, Mary Tudor was a cultured Renaissance princess who was brought to the throne by an audacious coup. She made a grand marriage to Philip of Spain, but her attempts to revitalize England at home and abroad were cut short by her early death at the age of forty-two. The first popular biography of Mary in thirty years, The Myth of "Bloody Mary" offers a fascinating, controversial look at this much-maligned queen.
Crisis Caravan: What's Wrong with Humanitarian Aid?
In her controversial, no-holds-barred expos Linda Polman shows how a vast industry has grown up around humanitarian aid. The Crisis Caravan takes us to war zones around the globe, showing how aid operations and the humanitarian world have become a feature of military strategy. Impassioned, gripping, and even darkly absurd, journalist Linda Polman "gives some powerful examples of unconscionable assistance...a world where aid workers have become enablers of the atrocities they seek to relieve" (The Boston Globe).
Katherine the Queen: The Remarkable Life of Katherine Parr, the Last Wife of Henry VIII
The general perception of Katherine Parr is that she was a provincial nobody with intellectual pretensions who became queen of England because the king needed a nurse as his health declined. Yet the real Katherine Parr was attractive, passionate, ambitious, and highly intelligent. Thirty years old (younger than Anne Boleyn had been) when she married the king, she was twice widowed and held hostage by the northern rebels during the great uprising of 1536 37 known as the Pilgrimage of Grace. Her life had been dramatic even before she became queen and it would remain so after Henry's death. She hastily and secretly married her old flame, the rakish Sir Thomas Seymour, and died shortly after giving birth to her only child in September 1548. Her brief happiness was undermined by the very public flirtation of her husband and stepdaughter, Princess Elizabeth. She was one of the most influential and active queen consorts in English history, and this is her story."

Fidler and James have edited a guide that characterizes and evaluates, in depth, the leading journals throughout the musical professions. The listings number some 170 titles, selected for their historical as well as contemporary significance. . . . [T]his guide makes a significant contribution to the literature and is recommended for all academic libraries. ChoiceInternational Music Journals is an international and cross-disciplinary guide to periodical literature in music. It deals not only with scholarly journals, but with those journals important to the music profession, from flautists and theorists, to musicologists and educators. Thus, in addition to journals representing the traditional fields of music scholarship (musicology, ethnomusicology, theory, therapy, and education), those publications important to various areas of music performance, composition, popular music, discography, and librarianship are included.Within this broad scope, approximately 200 of the most important titles are treated extensively. Each entry addresses five general aspects of the journal: historical background (founding and intent, editors, publishers, frequency, title, and title changes); physical description (format, illustrations); contents (subject area(s), scope, features, special issues); critical assessment (intended audience, level and quality, editorial policy, impact, innovations, outstanding issues, and articles); and bibliography (external indexes, reviews of or articles on the journal). In addition to the major entries, the book also features an introductory essay on and bibliography of the history of music periodicals; an appendix of significant journals inaugurated since 1980; a chronology; biographical notes on the contributors; and an extensive index by title, title variants, editors, general topic, geographical region, and publisher. This will be an essential tool for everyone interested in any aspect of music.

Edward Burlingame Hill

Edward Burlingame Hill

Linda Tyler Schmidt

Greenwood Press

sidottu
Breaking with the Teutonic tradition of his predecessors, composer Edward Burlingame Hill was among the first Americans to study composition in Paris. His music, in which he incorporated new harmonic, instrumental, and textural devices, helped foster acceptance for many early twentieth-century innovations. Hill also shared his predilection for French music with students at Harvard, where he taught from 1908 until 1940. Through his courses in orchestration and music history, Hill's students were exposed first-hand to modern French compositional techniques and the latest European musical trends. As a writer, Hill served as a Boston music critic, authored many journal articles on contemporary music, and wrote the first systematic English-language study of French musical thought from Chabrier to Les Six. This volume charts Hill's life and career as a composer, educator, and writer in the context of early twentieth-century American culture. The first section consists in a biographical and interpretive essay that details his multifaceted career and identifies his contributions to American music. Subsequent chapters provide the first complete listing of his musical and prose writings, a bibliography of writings about him, and a discography of commercially produced recordings. This bio-bibliography represents the first study of Edward Burlingame Hill to appear in print, and it offers an in-depth look at this important musical figure through annotated citations of his works and their performances, writings by and about him, and his recorded works. It illustrates the significance of his role in the early twentieth-century musical scene as composer, influential mentor, and early music historian. A useful guide to further research as well, this work will serve as an important resource for musicologists, music historians, and students of American music.
Societies in Upheaval

Societies in Upheaval

As nation states consolidated their power in the early modern period, Europe witnessed tragic economic dislocations, oppression, and wars leading to waves of terrorism and revolution that mirror our contemporary world situation in striking ways. Current perceptions of the dynamics of revolution, however, are largely determined by theoretical models that fail to account for the realities of the early modern peiod. This volume, the first comparative study of the three insurrections that erupted almost simultaneously during the War of the Spanish Succession, addresses that problem. Using their careful review of historical events as a focus, Linda Frey and Marsha Frey explore the nature and causes of revolution and examine the preconceptions and mythology surrounding that term.

This volume chronicles the phenomenon of a television program that commanded first place for much of the time since its premiere in September 1984. Each week in the United States it has consistently drew a loyal audience of up to 60 million people, breaking records for ratings and shares. The show is credited with lifting a third-place network into commanding leadership, advancing the image of black families, being the object of the greatest syndication barter deal in history, and regenerating the sitcom genre.Approached from a systems-theoretical perspective, this book considers The Cosby Show historically, economically, politically, legally, and socioculturally. The book provides detailed examination of the show's production, audience profiles, and international reviews and reactions to it. Fuller includes the results of a survey conducted by her (and translated into appropriate languages) for more than 800 responses from a dozen countries. Media scholars continue to call for future research on acculturation effects of television and for research on complete, contextual studies of specific television genres. The Cosby Show: Audiences, Impact and Implications attempts to fill those gaps.

Combining assiduous attention to biography and bibliography with original literary criticism oriented toward feminist theory, this volume profiles and analyzes fifty significant women writers of Spain--some celebrated and some overlooked--from the fourteenth century to the present. The work includes poets, fiction writers, dramatists, and essayists. Lives and works are examined with reference to complex issues surrounding gender, creativity, and social mores. Partly informed by findings of the fifty contributing scholars, Levine and Marson have also provided a volume introduction interpreting herstory in terms of Spanish culture, likening the struggle for identity and artistic expression in an engendered world to balancing on a tightrope. Extensive bibliographies for each writer document original works, modern editions and translations, and criticism; and a general bibliography selects valuable sources pertaining to Spanish women writers and gender-related topics.
