Neoliberalism and Insecurity in Advanced Capitalism

Neoliberalism and Insecurity in Advanced Capitalism

This book examines the relationship between neoliberalism and insecurity, beginning with the post-World War II period and continuing up through the present. Neoliberalism – the dominant political economic perspective that elevates competition above all else at both the structural and individual levels – has increased the amount of insecurity (e.g., food, energy, job) across the world. It provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of how and why neoliberalism and insecurity have become intertwined over the last half century. The book takes a novel approach to the study of neoliberalism, insecurity, and their intersection. First, in addition to examining specific types of insecurity, the overall concept of insecurity is defined and theorized as a fundamental part of neoliberal capitalism. Second, to help bypass the structural versus individual binary that has come to characterize much of the neoliberalism literature, a field-theoretic framework, heavily influenced by the work of Pierre Bourdieu, is employed. As such, it will be of great interest for researchers in neoliberalism, insecurity, and Bourdieu’s theory of practice, including advanced undergraduate students and graduate scholars from sociology, anthropology, geography, political science, and public health.

The Catholic Reformation (1999) provides a dynamic and original history of this crucial movement in early modern Europe. Starting from the late middle ages, it clearly traces the continuous transformation of Catholicism in its structure, bodies and doctrine. Charting the gain in momentum of Catholic renewal from the time of the Council of Trent, it also considers the ambiguous effect of the Protestant Reformation in accelerating the renovation of the Catholic Church. It explores how and why the Catholic Reformation occurred, stressing that many moves towards restoration were underway well before the Protestant Reformation. The huge impact the Catholic renewal had, not only on the papacy, Church leaders and religious ritual and practice, but also on the lives of ordinary people – their culture, arts, attitudes and relationships – is shown in colourful detail.

Infrastructure Policy and Inequality

Infrastructure Policy and Inequality

Michael A. Cohen

This book reframes the purpose of infrastructure from being an input to economic growth to becoming a major instrument in reducing socio-economic inequalities in both industrialized and developing countries.Drawing on global and national lessons of COVID-19 and extensive working experience in 55 countries, this book reviews infrastructure policies and performance over several decades and suggests that the “underperformance” of infrastructure could be improved by more attention to users and the demand side, and thereby contribute to overcoming many obstacles facing low-income communities around the world. This book argues that growth is not a necessary condition for sustainability or social justice, and that both are undermined by structural inequalities which reduce the income and opportunities of urban households. More focus on user needs can substantially change the distribution of benefits and the quality of living conditions of low-income people. It provides a unique theoretical and on-the-ground critique of conventional infrastructure practices while illustrating to readers the many positive experiences around the world. More infrastructure is not enough; different and better is needed. This book reviews World Bank experience in launching a 30-year program to alleviate urban poverty through some 7,000 projects, showing that many significant policy changes have led to a big improvement in global urban policies adopted by national and local governments, yet have failed to significantly address and reduce intra-urban inequalities. The audience for this book includes academics, both faculty and advanced graduate students, while also a wider public interested in the prospects for international development.

Now in its second volume, Regreening the Built Environment provides an overview of physical and social environmental challenges that the planet is facing and presents solutions that restore ecological processes, reclaim open space, foster social equity, and facilitate a green economy.Healing the planet requires a combination of strategies networked across multiple scales of development, including buildings, sites, communities, and regions. Case studies from a range of locations in the United States, Denmark, Vietnam, Germany, South Korea, Switzerland, France, and the United Kingdom, among others, demonstrate how existing gray infrastructure can be retrofitted with green infrastructure and low-impact development techniques. From this, the author shows how a building can be designed that creates greenspace or generates energy; likewise, a roadway can be a parkway, an alley can be a wildlife corridor, and a parking surface can be a garden. This new edition also includes case studies that have successfully reconnected communities that were fragmented by unjust planning practices and irresponsible patterns of development, resilient design solutions in response to natural disasters, passive design strategies that can make interior spaces more efficient and healthier, and expanded discussions on capturing carbon, renewable energy, agriculture, waste, public transit, and adaptive reuse, including innovative ideas on how to reimagine the shopping mall in the era of e-commerce.The strategies presented in this book will stimulate discussions within the design profession and will be of great interest to students and practitioners of environmental studies, architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design.

Applied Multiple Regression/Correlation Analysis for Aviation Research describes and illustrates multiple regression/correlation (MRC) analysis in an aviation context, including flight instruction, airport design, airline routes, and aviation human factors research. Structured in four parts, the book first reviews the major concepts of bivariate correlation and regression and then extends the bivariate case to two, four, and k predictors coupled with discussions on statistical inference, underlying assumptions, and regression diagnostics relative to MRC analysis. The book then builds on this foundation by presenting MRC variable selection strategies (simultaneous, hierarchical, and statistical regression), analyzing sets of predictors, and introducing coding strategies for nominal predictors. The book concludes by presenting how MRC can be used to conduct an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), interactions, mediation analysis, and binary logistic regression.Throughout the presentation, the book provides a balance between procedural knowledge as well as conceptual understanding. Detailed guided examples are presented at the end of each chapter that apply the topics and concepts of the chapter from the perspective of conducting a research study. The analytic strategies demonstrated via these guided examples are clearly explained, enabling readers to understand, conduct, and report results correctly. Pedagogical features associated with each chapter include a set of student learning outcomes and an end-of-chapter package that consists of a summary of the chapter’s main topics/concepts, a list of key terms, and review exercises, including multiple-choice items and a research scenario with data for students to analyze.Tailored to the needs of aviation students, Applied Multiple Regression/Correlation Analysis for Aviation Research is the ideal textbook for research-oriented graduate aviation programs such as a thesis-based master’s degree or doctoral program that require knowledge of advanced statistical strategies for analyzing research data.
