Given the splendours of Angkor Thom together with another 90 temple sites within the Angkor Archaeological Park, it is no wonder that Cambodia is dubbed the 'Kingdom of Wonder'. In its listing, UNESCO described Angkor as 'an exceptional testimony to a lost civilization'. But Cambodia is also a revitalized modern country with new infrastructure and many living traditions, as well as stunning countryside and quiet beaches. Mick Shippen's informative and entertaining text illustrated by his distinctive and highly personal photography present a wide-ranging introduction to the many facets of Cambodia for resident and visitor alike. The main text is accompanied by sidebars or box stories that highlight details of particular interest, provide anecdotal information and give a lively and reader-friendly look to the book. The book is divided into two parts, the first part giving an overview of the landscapes, people, history, modern economy and culture of Cambodia, and the second looking in detail at the five main regions: Phnom Penh and Around; the North-west; Siem Reap and Angkor; the South Coast and the East.

This book tells the remarkable history of an Alfa Romeo Monza and its characterful drivers and owners, some with life stories worthy of a movie script. Built in 1933, '221130' was raced that year by the Hon. Brian Lewis and won its debut at Brooklands and the arduous Mannin Moar race on the Isle of Man. The car continued to be raced until the war by John Cobb (1934) who later was a land speed record holder, Luis Fontes (1935) who was also an aeroplane racer, Anthony Powys-Lybbe (1936-37) and Fay Taylour (1938) who was interned during the Second World War for her Fascist links, at venues as diverse as Vila Real (Portugal) and Phoenix Park (Ireland). Post-war, a succession of notable owners included Peter Hampton, the Hon. Patrick Lindsay and Hubert Fabri, all passionate collectors, to arrive at its status today as one of the more important surviving Monzas, and a car with so much charisma and historic interest that it is a most worthy addition to the acclaimed 'Great Cars' series

El Ni o is the exciting debut novel from Irish Screenwriter and Playwright Mick Donnellan. Slick, stylish and always entertaining, the story is a rollercoaster of drama and tension that hasn't been seen in Irish fiction for a very long time. Charlie is our protagonist, the pickpocket that steals El Nino's wallet and then falls in love with her. She's the wild femme fatale, beautiful; enigmatic and seductive. Her father named her El Ni o because the night she was born there was a storm, and he said it signified the way she was to live her life. Dark and edgy with crisp fresh dialogue, this is a novel that engages the reader from the first line right through to the powerful finish. Review Excerpt .."..perhaps the most exciting part of this publication is that it comes from the heart of Mayo. Set in Ballinrobe, then spanning to Galway and back again, Donnellan has taken the West of Ireland and firmly placed it on the crime writing map. With flavours of Dashiel Hammet and Micky Spillane, the author never loses sight of his own locality. The poetry of Ireland's West is always fresh on the page. Everything from the bustle of Galway city, to the curious streets of Ballinrobe bounces off the book with the kind of vivid imagery and poetic description worthy of the world's finest writers. Apparently, we have entered an explosive time for West of Ireland fiction and long may it last..."

Did the 'Good Old Days' ever really exist? Mick Rennison is not so sure. After miraculously passing his test in an Atkinson Borderer way back in 1974, Mick drove in the days when crooks and con men seemed to run the haulage industry. And Mick worked for most of them! Earning crap wages from arrogant bosses with the constant threat of your P45 hanging over your head, he learned his trade through trial and error - many trials and lots of errors. His career took him all over Europe and Scandinavia taking musical shows to Norway, JCBs to Greece and supermarket deliveries down to Gibraltar. Driving for a variety of firms he double manned trucks with his wife Jo for nearly 10 years. Along the way he has been blown over in high winds, outwitted hijackers and held hostage by striking Spanish drivers. Now living on a narrow boat on the Grand Union Canal, Mick is approaching retirement and reflects on his varied career. With humour and not a little sarcasm, he concludes that as good as those days were he certainly wouldn't want to go back.

The Vodka-Cola Cowboy describes life trucking in what is possibly the harshest environment, in the world - Russia. Between 1990 and 1995 British owner driver Mick Twemlow worked to transport goods to, from and within Russia and the wider Soviet Union. Living in Moscow with his future wife, Elena and their daughter, Margarita, who was born there, in 1992, Mick learned the language and fully immersed himself in Russian society, giving him an insider's view of this time of massive upheaval in the Soviet Union. The book vividly illustrates the conditions that British truck drivers encountered, such as the atrocious winter weather in a wild and unforgiving landscape, police harassment and the dangers that came with the dissolution of the USSR. Mick was the only British truck driver, in Moscow, throughout the whole of the anti-Gorbachev coup, of 1991 and so the book offers a unique perspective, of that historical event. The incidents described in the book range from the humorous, to the serious, to the potentially life threatening. This book will primarily be of interest to truck drivers, and those with an interest in road transport and the haulage industry, in general.Russia is still an unknown quantity, all around the globe, with regards to people's understanding of it and its people and so The Vodka-Cola Cowboy will also be of interest to anyone who has a fascination with the country, particularly during this tumultuous time in the region's socio-political history.

A failure at most things but not storytelling, this is Mick Channon Jnr's finest book to date. This is also his first book. Framed within the tribulations of a turbulent year in a racing yard, How's Your Dad? examines the relationship between a father and son. Mick Channon Snr, an arthritic workaholic and "grumpy old bastard", played football at the highest level for over twenty years. Almost uniquely, he followed up this sporting career with another, scaling the heights of racing. Mick Channon Jnr had plenty to live up to and despite enjoying the benefits of such a heritage he felt that pressure, as well as the relative anonymity of always being 'Mick's son'.

Becoming Elektra tells the incredible true story of the pioneering Elektra Records label and its far-sighted founder, Jac Holzman, who built a small folk imprint into a home for some of the most groundbreaking, important, and enduring music of the rock era. Placing the Elektra label in a broader context, the book presents a gripping narrative of musical and cultural history that reads like an inventory of all that is exciting and innovative about the 60s and 70s: The Doors, Love s Forever Changes, Tim Buckley s Goodbye and Hello, The Stooges, The MC5 s Kick Out The Jams, Queen and Queen II, The Incredible String Band, Carly Simon s No Secrets, and many, many more. First published in 2010, Becoming Elektra was praised as 'eye-opening (Q) and a 'dazzling narrative (The Sun), and for 'perfectly encapsulating the enigmatic, unpredictable spirit of the label (Record Collector). This fully revised and expanded edition includes a brand new foreword by John Densmore of The Doors and draws on extensive new interviews with a wide range of Elektra alumni, including Tom Paley, Judy Henske, Johnny Echols, Jean Ritchie, and Bernie Krause, as well as further conversations with Holzman himself. It also adds two new chapters: a look at Elektra in Britain in the 60s and a reappraisal of the label s 70s output.

‘If we were guaranteed success in everything we tried then life would be pretty boring.’Mainstream news reports about climbing are dominated by action from the world’s highest mountains, more often than not focusing on tragedy and controversy. Far removed from this high-altitude circus, a group of visionary and specialist mountaineers are seeking out eye-catching objectives in the most remote corners of the greater ranges and attempting first ascents in lightweight style.Mick Fowler is the master of the small and remote Himalayan expedition. He has been at the forefront of this pioneering approach to alpinism for over thirty years, balancing his family life, a full-time job at the tax office and his annual trips to the greater ranges in order to attempt mountains that may never have been seen before by Westerners, let alone climbed by them.In No Easy Way, his third volume of climbing memoirs following Vertical Pleasure and On Thin Ice, Fowler recounts a series of expeditions to stunning mountains in China, India, Nepal and Tibet. Alongside partners including Paul Ramsden, Dave Turnbull, Andy Cave and Victor Saunders, he attempts striking, technically challenging unclimbed lines on Shiva, Gave Ding and Mugu Chuli – with a number of ascents winning prestigious Piolets d’Or, the Oscars of the mountaineering world.Written with his customary dry wit and understatement, he manages challenges away – the art of securing a permit for Tibet – and at home – his duties as Alpine Club president – all the while pursuing his passion for exploratory mountaineering.

'A snapshot of what the crime novel is doing now and a glimpse of the directions it might take in the future' - Mick Herron'Crime fiction demands a flexible, sceptical framework for its own increasingly rude health. The eleven writers in this third MA Crime Fiction Anthology understand this. Irrespective of subject, setting, theme or prose style, each uses the multitudes of the crime genre to embrace and reflect who we are and how we live now. Each understands and respects the genre, even as they dismantle its traditions' - Tom Benn'The creative writing workshop is an environment that is built upon freedom, but also support. It's almost too magical a place, too idyllic, too democratic, too truthful. But I don't believe in magic, any more than I believe in the muse. What has happened in this space, which is ever expanding, over the last couple of years, has been an outpouring of talent and determination, by eleven extraordinary writers' - Henry SuttonFeaturing work by: Laura Ashton • Judi Daykin • Antony Dunford • Jayne Farnworth • Natasha Hutcheson • Louise Mangos • Elizabeth Saccente • Matthew Smith • Karen Taylor • Wendy Turbin • Bridget Walsh
