The Cinema of Mike Leigh

The Cinema of Mike Leigh

A keen observer of manners and mores, Mike Leigh has been hailed as a celebrator of "ordinary" people, yet it wasn't until relatively recently that audiences have been able to appreciate the full body of his work. In discussing all his films from Bleak Moments and High Hopes through Naked, the Oscar-nominated Secrets and Lies and Topsy Turvy to All or Nothing, Garry Watson considers this claim, examining the films' influence and their effect. At the same time, he takes on the very concepts of "the real" and "the ordinary" in regard to Leigh's work, challenging much perceived thinking among critics and moviegoers alike. To what category does the director's work really belong? Is it British Realism? The avant garde? Through careful textual detail and wider social and literary comparison with the works of Charles Dickens and T.S. Eliot, he argues ultimately for the aritistic and cultural significance of Leigh's work as one of Britian's most respected filmmakers.

Mike Carter has been a lecturer at Streetbridge College of Further Education for 30 years. He has been the leader of the pack, scourge of college management, seducer of students, colleagues and wives of colleagues. But now, approaching 60, things are going awry. The younger lecturers are no longer in thrall to him, his powers of seduction are declining, and those whom he has offended over the years, sensing his diminishing influence, are seeking to exact revenge.Meanwhile, Marcia Martell, the young, newly appointed Principal, is determined to drag the institution into the 21st century in the face of foot-dragging by the older members of her management team and opposition from the lecturers' union. She issues a memorandum to staff imposing a new code of dress and behaviour: this is seized on by Mike Carter as an opportunity to re-assert his waning influence by leading the fight against her. However, the politics of the workplace are muddied by events in the personal lives of the protagonists, and by antagonisms and jealousies between individuals, generations and competing interest groups. When sexual tension is added to the mix, the outcome is unpredictable. The author began working in Colleges of FE in 1968. He was a lecturer, an Adult Education organiser, Head of Department and finally a Vice-Principal, before retiring in 1995.

This long overdue publication tells the story of artists Mike Kelley (1954-2012) and Jim Shaw (b. 1952), who shared a lifelong friendship and common background: an upbringing and education in the State of Michigan. Published on the occasion of the major exhibition of the same title, this catalogue is the first to place these artists' practices alongside each other in historical context, approaching their work as parallel visual meditations on Midwestern culture in particular and on American culture more broadly. The catalogue begins with their meeting at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and early collaborations, including the formation of the collective Destroy All Monsters. Branching out from there, major bodies of work from each artist are presented with a specific interest in tracing the lines of influence as rooted in the vernacular visual cultures of Michigan and the Midwest. Illustrations of the artists' source material, their individual works, and installation views from the exhibition feature prominently throughout the publication, offering readers new perspectives on the work of these seminal artists. Essays by exhibition cocurators Marc-Olivier Wahler, Carla Acevedo-Yates, and Steven L. Bridges also unpack the many narratives layered in the exhibition, including an interview with Jim Shaw.
