Jean-Patrick Manchette (1942-1995) est le pere spirituel du mouvement que les journalistes ont baptise neo-polar et qui, aujourd'hui encore, continue d'influencer de nombreux auteurs. Il s'est inspire d'une critique sociale d'extreme gauche, basee sur la pensee situationniste, Hegel et Marx, afin de dynamiter le ronron du roman noir du debut des annees soixante-dix. Il a aussi innove du point de vue formel par un style insolent, tres litteraire et referentiel (nombreuses allusions aux romans hard-boiled de Chandler et Hammett ainsi qu'au cinema americain et au jazz). Manchette, romancier et theoricien du roman noir, fut un ecrivain particulierement representatif de son temps et, surtout, un veritables homme orchestre. Il debute par la traduction de romans (Robert Littell, Ross Thomas, Robert Bloch, Westlake entre autres) et de B. D. (Les gardiens de Moore et Gibbons). Entre 1971 et 1982, parallelement a l'ecriture de dix romans, il se consacre a la critique: de cinema pour Charlie hebdo, de polars pour Charlie mensuel et Polar. Il dirige la collection Futurama aux Presses de la Cite, il est redacteur en chef de BD, l'hebdo de la BD, et chroniqueur pour la rubrique Jeux de l'esprit de Metal hurlant. A partir de 1982, c'est le silence romanesque. Il se consacre alors a l'ecriture de scenarios pour le cinema et la television - plusieurs de ses livres passent (plus ou moins bien) au grand ecran: i dingos, o chateaux (Folle a tuer, Boisset), Le Petit bleu de la cote ouest (Trois hommes a abattre, Deray), Morgue pleine (Polar, Bral) entre autres. En 1989, il est opere d'une tumeur du pancreas - il decedera six ans plus tard d'un cancer du poumon. Il laisse plusieurs chefs-d'oeuvre, tels L'Affaire N'Gustro, Le Petit bleu de la cote Ouest, La Position du tireur couche (Gallimard). Apres sa mort, les Editions Rivages ont publie ses critiques de cinema et de polar, ainsi qu'un roman inacheve, La Princesse du sang. Un auteur majeur, dont l'influence s'etend bien au-dela du strict domaine du roman policier.
