In the spring and summer of 1956 the Soviet Union invaded Hungary to reassert control of the country. This text is a full analysis, drawing on archival collections from the Eastern bloc countries to reinterpret decision making during this Cold War crisis. Johanna Granville selects four key patterns of misperception as laid out by political scientist Robert Jervis and shows how these patterns prevailed in the military crackdown and in other countries' reactions to it. Granville examines the statements and actions of Soviet Presidium members, the Hungarian leadership, US policy makers and Yugoslav and Polish leaders. She concludes that the United States bears some responsiblity for the events of 1956, as ill-advised US covert actions may have convinced Soviet leaders that America was attempting to weaken Soviet hegemony over Eastern Europe. Granville's multi-archival research tends to confirm the post-revisionists' theory about the old war: it was everyone's fault and no one's fault. It resulted from the emerging bipolar structure of the international system, the power vacuum in Europe's centre, and spiralling misconceptions.
Hope for the World

Hope for the World

Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke; Guillaume D'Alancon

Cardinal Burke, former Archbishop of St. Louis, and Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, is now the chaplain of the Order of Malta and a great friend of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. In a thorough and hard-hitting discussion with Guillaume d'Alancon, episcopal delegate for the family and for life issues of a French diocese, he offers his thoughts frankly and without concern for political correctness on the pressing questions of today: the Church, the Liturgy, spiritual renewal, the family, marriage, openness to children and respect for life. Every theme is approached from the perspective of deep Faith, effectively and without polemics. Cardinal Burke, a great canonist, with long pastoral experience, treats with clarity and directness these often difficult subjects. This is a lucid, straight forward and important discussion for the understanding the essential moral and spiritual challenges of today, and the deep roots of the natural law, which is written on our hearts. "Jesus, the Son, is the door situated between the Father and Christian souls. There is no other. Jesus is the door through which the praises and sacrifices of souls ascend to the Father, and through which choice graces and the fruits of the infinite merits of the God-man descend upon the world. Let us turn our attention to the lock of this door, namely the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In order to open the door, we must strive to know the secrets of this divine heart, which has loved mankind so much."- Cardinal Raymond Burke"

A Roman centurion asks Jesus to heal his dying servant. Jesus agrees to help and begins making his way to the centurion's home, but the centurion tells him not to bother making the trip. He says that it would be enough for Jesus just to say the word for the servant to be healed. The Bible then says that Jesus ""marveled"" at the centurion's faith. How could Jesus, whom Christians believe to be God incarnate, who knows all things, be amazed by anything a human does? There must be something special about faith to cause Jesus to be amazed. Christians are called to possess the same kind of faith as the centurion. It may not seem possible, but if we want it, God helps us obtain and maintain the kind of faith that can amaze even God himself. And once we have that amazing faith, it will lead us to share joy, hope, and love with others around us.

If poetry has a soul, it might be metaphor, since metaphor transforms and enlivens even our most common objects and experiences. In this latest poetic excursion by Raymond Haan, you will find many common objects, among them garbage cans, a mole, a dune ride, Oliver the dog, a door and hinge, a needle, a raspberry, and a trapped raccoon. For the author, each of these bits of common terrain transforms into a new-found land, a fresh and less tangible territory that invites a bit of exploration and offers some joy of discovery.

Like the participants in all great battles of the past, the men of the Eighth Air Force flying out of England gradually slip into history, the sound of their living voices, like the tumult of their deadly missions, becoming only echoes in the minds of those surviving them. A treasure of individual stories will die with most of them. Many want or wanted to quietly forget or withhold the details of those times. Some few leave us with more specific remembrances in poignant oral histories or the written word. The following account is one of those precious records. As a farm boy in central Pennsylvania, Ray Ives never imagined the course the world or his life would take as Europe fermented and eventually exploded into World War II. In this fairly brief and crisp telling of how he came to his fate in a German prisoner of war camp next to the North Sea, Ives, a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, relives "Black Thursday", the 14 October 1943 mission over Schweinfurt, Germany, through the eyes of a bombardier in the Plexiglas nosecone of a B-17 Flying Fortress. From wake up call to the order to bail out of his flak- and bullet-shattered plane at 25,000 feet above the French countryside, to his subsequent evasion, eventual capture and experiences in Stalag Luft I, Ray revisits the emotions and strange coincidences of the time. In doing so, he causes us to think of what must have been the thousands of other unique and fascinating stories of brave airmen shot from the skies and forced to wait out the war at the mercy of the Nazis. Devoid of soppy, fabricated emotions to develop interest, the 'real' story is worthy in itself of substantial publication as part of the archives of World War II history. Underlying it's telling is a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor that Ray has maintained to this day and which invigorates the text. 106 photos, illustrations, documents. A Merriam Press World War 2 Autobiography.

Here they come--our ancient, never-aging alphabetical friends. This little book of light verse and pleasing sketches endows each letter with personality, some charming and some a bit rascally, some odd and some pathetic. Most of the letters take humor seriously, and so, as the verse and art frolic about them, they maintain their expected dignity and grace. They will, however, allow you a chuckle at their expense. If, perchance, you have neglected these steadfast friends, here is your chance to make amends. Samuel Johnson said, ""If a man does not make new acquaintance as he advances through life, he will soon find himself left alone. A man, Sir, should keep his friendship in constant repair."" Maybe a little visit with our saints and scamps will renew your friendship with each one--and help to keep that friendship in a state of jolly good repair.
