Seeking Sexual Freedom: African Rites, Rituals, and Sankofa in the Bedroom
A bold foray into African traditions around sexual pleasure and joy, with the personal goal of self-discovery and liberation, by one of Africa's preeminent feminists who "is changing the way African women talk about sex" (Harper's Bazaar). While working on her first "groundbreaking" (Ms. Magazine) book, The Sex Lives of African Women, acclaimed African feminist and activist Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah had access to the wildest dreams and spiciest realities of women from around the world. But so often, she noticed that something was holding these women back from achieving full liberation and unfettered joy. So, she set out to apply sankofa--which means learning from the past to inform the future--to sex and pleasure, reclaiming African traditions in a quest to achieve sexual freedom. Organized in three parts, Sekyiamah first takes readers across the African continent, from Senegal to Tanzania and beyond, where she meets and trains with gurus, "witches", and aunties whose job it is to guide girls through puberty rites and later through "marital training." She discusses practices like beading and pulling, while highlighting the spiritual and gender-fluid nature of African traditional religions. The second part of the book asks us how we've lost our way, looking at the incursion of colonialism and western patriarchal norms into sexuality which has led to our warped ideals of beauty and shame, internalized racism, as well as state and interpersonal violence that stand in the way of sexual liberation. In the third and concluding part, Sekyiamah shows that we can overcome these hurdles by returning to a more joyful and free sexual practice, using practical advice and prompts to chart our own journey. Part travelogue and part manifesto, Seeking Sexual Freedom is the powerful and bold call to joy and sexual freedom women of all backgrounds need today.

The Sacred Sex Rites of Ishtar

The Sacred Sex Rites of Ishtar

The Sacred Sex Rites of Ishtar lays out in detail how shamanic sex has been used, throughout history, to prepare pharaohs, kings, tsars and sultans for Sovereignty. It is a spiritual technique that leads alchemically to a superior intelligence and self-empowerment, which is a direct result of interacting with beings who inhabit a parallel universe to this one - another dimension - from whom man has traditionally gained his knowledge about his place and purpose on Earth and in the cosmos. In ancient times, the ability to tap into this superior wisdom through sacred sex magic was transmitted to rulers by a cuen or hierodule, one who was in touch with these extra-dimensional beings or life forms also known as the spirits. It was understood by the wise sages of ancient times that Sovereignty is an actual magical force that arises from the spirits of the land, otherwise known as the Fae, the Gentry, the Sidhe or the Faeries, who are of an Elder and wiser race which inhabits a timeless zone within the parallel dimensions. So the ignition of this shamanic force gave the rulers of antiquity the power of Sovereignty over the land through firing up their higher brain centres, leading to the generation of wisdom and enlightenment and thus the ability and the right to reign. In this book, you will also learn how to benefit from sacred shamanic sex today. The cuen did not need to wear a crown on her head because she was already Bright-browed; her inner crown was already sparkling with the gold of the Sun making love with the diamond light of the Moon. Nor she did not require any anointing from the Archbishop of Canterbury because her innermost elixirs were already flowing like honeyed nectars throughout her whole being. The cuen was a shaman-type skilled in evoking and awakening the two energetic serpents which, during sexual intercourse, would rise and interweave up through the human body, just as they do on a caduceus, to create the Marriage of the Sun and the Moon. These two serpents were known to those who practised the Indian form of the rite, known as tantra, as Ida and Pingala. The ancient Egyptians believed that one serpent was black and the other gold. Sacred sex rites were what inspired the erotic poetry of the Sumerians and Babylonians, and the Song of Solomon in the Old Testament. Whatever the different names and belief systems that used such diverse imagery to describe this process, it is important to realise it is not an imaginary visualisation but a real physiological experience in which the Other Worlds break through into this one, and it is still practised today. As a shaman and mythologist, Annie Dieu-Le-Veut is in regular communion with the spirits of the Land. In this second edition The Sacred Sex Rites of Ishtar , originally published five years ago, she lays out a way for the spiritual seeker to learn how to visit these other dimensions, so that they can learn about sex magic from their own spirit guides. She gently guides the reader, first by helping them to form their own the cognitive foundation stone for this practice by learning about the evidence - from ancient Greece, Egypt, Crete, India, Sumer and Babylon - that shows sacred sex was once an integral part of kingship rites. She also explains the meaning of the Faery Marriage, known to alchemists as the Marriage of the Sun and the Moon, which finds it resonance in Christian mysticism and the stories about the Holy Grail. And finally Annie shows you how to practice these simple techniques yourself, in order to walk the well-trodden, ancient path towards enlightenment in your own life today.

Women's Rites, Women's Mysteries: Intuitive Ritual Creation

Women's Rites, Women's Mysteries: Intuitive Ritual Creation

Ruth Barrett

There are physical and psychological experiences and rites of passage common to all women's lives, crossing the boundaries of age, class, culture, race, sexual orientation, and religion. While women have a great hunger for ritual to reflect the events in their lives, they often do not know how to begin. For many, the very thought of creating their own rituals is too intimidating, and instead wait for others to take the lead, or simply suppress their own needs, desires, and dreams. Consequently, many women lead lives that too often are physically, emotionally, and spiritually unfulfilled. Finally, comes an author who seeks to provide women with the tools to address and fulfill their own needs for meaning that is sourced from their own intuitive knowing. Together, with open minds and hearts, we can learn to shape chaos and human needs into works of great power and beauty.Women's Rites, Women's Mysteries is a practical and magical, one-of-a-kind guide and resource for both creating and facilitating Goddess and female-centered rituals. Written for individuals and groups, both beginners and experienced ritualists alike, Dianic High Priestess and seasoned ritualist Ruth Barrett guides women through a unique step-by-step process, with practices that weaves personal need with an individual or group's intuitive creativity. Barrett demystifies the components of how to design and facilitate an effective ritual for any significant occasion, seasonal holy day, or life-cycle event. Unique from other books on ritual, Barrett emphasizes energetics for ritual, delving into the awareness and conscious working of energy to intentionally align, support, and carry out the ritual's purpose. From personal energetic preparation, preparation for group ritual facilitators and participants, Barrett provides practices and suggestions for this important and often overlooked aspect of the ritual experience.Women's Rites, Women's Mysteries is specifically not a didactic ritual "cookbook," that tells the reader exactly what to do, but rarely explains the reason or motivation behind a given enactment or symbol. Ruth Barrett teaches women how to think like a ritualist and develop the inner tools needed to create meaningful rituals for themselves and with others. Beginning with a discussion on the power of women's ritual and the importance of women creating their own ritual experiences, Barrett proceeds with how to use intuition to develop a ritual's purpose, how to work with energy that supports the ritual theme, creating enactments, appropriate structure, creating invocations, and an overview of a female-centered Wheel of the Year for seasonal celebrations. Barrett brings four decades of experience providing ritual facilitation, to discuss the personal and practical skills needed when creating, preparing for, and facilitating small or large group rituals that open to the public - a must for women drawn to providing rituals for others. Rarely addressed in print before is the topic of how to evaluate a ritual in order to constantly learn and improve them. A variety of magical techniques with applications for ritual and spellcraft are woven throughout the book that enhance and deepen a woman's relationship with herself and the powers of nature. Barrett substantially discusses her perspective on the roles and responsibilities of the Priestess in ancient and contemporary times, the herstory and cosmology of the feminist Dianic tradition, its foundational spiritual tenants based on female embodiment, spiritual service, and as a spiritual feminist tool for women to heal from internalized patriarchal oppression.

The Book of Rites is a diverse collection of texts of varied but uncertain origin and date, lacking the overall structure found in the other "rites" texts (the Rites of Zhou and the Etiquette and Ceremonial). Some sections consist of definitions of ritual terms, particularly those found in the Etiquette and Ceremonial, while others contain details of the life and teachings of Confucius. Parts of the text have been traced to such pre-Han works as the Xunzi and L shi Chunqiu, while others are believed to date from the Former Han period.

Sacred Sites - Contested Rites/Rights

Paganism is held to be the fastest growing 'religion' in Britain today. Pagan identities and constructions of sacredness contest assumptions of a 'closed' past and untouchable heritage, within a socio-politics in which prehistoric archaeology -- the stone circles, burial cairns and rock art of the British Isles -- is itself subject to political and economic threats. Pagans see prehistoric monuments in a living, enchanted landscape of deities, ancestors, spirits, 'wights' and other non-human agencies engaged with for personal and community empowerment. From all areas of Britain and indeed worldwide, people come to sacred sites of prehistory to make pilgrimage, befriend places, give offerings, act as unofficial 'site guardians', campaign for 'site welfare'. Summer solstice access at Stonehenge attracts tens of thousands of celebrants; threats of quarrying near Derbyshire's Nine Ladies stone circle or Yorkshire's Thornborough Henges lead to protests and campaigns for the preservation of sacred landscapes and conservation of plant and animal species. Pagans can be seen as allies to the interests of heritage management, yet instances of site damage and recent claims for the reburial of non-Christian human remains disrupt the preservation ethos of those who manage and study these sites, and the large-scale celebrations at Stonehenge and Avebury are subject to continual negotiation. In this book an anthropologist (Blain) and archaeologist (Wallis) examine interfaces between paganisms and archaeology, considering the emergence of 'sacred sites' in pagan and heritage discourse and implications of pagan involvement for heritage management, archaeology, anthropology -- and for pagans themselves, as well as considering practical guidelines for reciprocal benefit.
