Why Kids Can't Spell is a resource reference book for parents and educators who have an interest in and a concern for children's spelling ability. The purpose of this book is to encourage and foster good spelling practices in the home and at school to reflect modern teaching methods. The design of this book uses a scope and sequence format with each chapter building on the previous one. Every chapter includes a discussion on spelling background knowledge. In this section one finds an analysis of children's writing samples, in accordance with J. Richard Gentry and Jean Wallace Gillet's Model of Spelling Development. This is followed by numerous inquiry-based, project based and generative ideas and activities. The activities in this book are practical and easy to prepare, use readily available materials and are meant to facilitate readers' understanding. All chapters are related and therefore, the reader is encouraged to browse and borrow from any chapter. The activities may be modified in order to appropriately challenge and meet individual needs.

The amount of theoretical knowledge required to become a fluent improvisor on the piano can be overwhelming to the aspiring jazz pianist. Jazz Piano Vocabulary is a series of books designed to help students master each scale and learn how to apply it in improvisation. Each book focuses on a different mode of the major scale, and features: . the scale in all twelve keys - two octaves up and down with complete fingerings . chords and left hand voicings that work with the scale . motivic sequences and melodic ideas (with right hand fingerings) . detailed instructions and suggestions on how to practice the material . opportunity to contact the author online if questions arise Volume 4, which focuses on the fourth mode of the major scale, the Lydian mode, also includes exercises for the left and right hand to help the intermediate improvisor with common phrasing and rhythmic problems, a jazz waltz etude, and exercises for learning how to comp in 3/4 meter. Because the Lydian mode is used in a more advanced harmonic context than some of the other modes, this volume is recommended after the material in Volumes 1, 2, and 5 has been mastered.Sound samples and additional information are made available to the reader on the publisher's website. This book is based on Roberta Piket's twenty-plus years of educational experience. In addition to her private students and her experience coaching jazz ensembles at Long Island University, Roberta has given clinics or masterclasses at the Eastman school of Music, Rutgers University, California Institute of the Arts, Macalester College, Duke University, The Jazz School, and countless middle and high schools throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan. An unusual feature of this book is the author's availability to answer questions on the material at the Muse Eek Publishing website, creating an interactive learning experience for the student.

During the twentieth century, the number of Christians in Africa grew from an estimated 4 million to more than 300 million. One of the forces that has propelled the church's remarkable growth is its liturgical music, which has been heavily influenced by indigenous musical traditions. This rewarding book takes readers ""inside the music"" for the first time. By examining the central role of indigenous music in promoting Christianity and in giving voice to local theologies, the authors seek to energize conversations between music, culture, and the church. Furthermore, they extract useful lessons for fostering faith communities around the globe.

Symptoms of the Self

Symptoms of the Self

Symptoms of the Self offers the first full study of the stage consumptive. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in France, Britain, and North America, tuberculosis was a leading killer. Its famous dramatic and operatic victims—Marguerite Gautier in La Dame aux Came´lias and her avatar Violetta in La Traviata, Mimi` in La Bohe`me, Little Eva in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and Edmund Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey into Night, to name but a few—are among the most iconic figures of the Western stage. Its classic symptoms, the cough and the blood-stained handkerchief, have become global performance shorthand for life-threatening illness. The consumptive character became a vehicle through which standards of health, beauty, and virtue were imposed; constructions of class, gender, and sexuality were debated; the boundaries of nationhood were transgressed or maintained; and an exceedingly fragile whiteness was held up as a dominant social ideal. By telling the story of tuberculosis on the transatlantic stage, Symptoms of the Self uncovers some of the wellsprings of modern Western theatrical practice—and of ideas about the self that still affect the way human beings live and die.

Paradigm

Rethinking Contemporary Social Theory outlines a new theoretical paradigm emerging from out of social construction theory, conflict theory, Marxism and critical theory and argues that these insights are redefining social theory as a whole. The authors select ten fields within sociology and in each one trace the reception and impact of the new paradigm. The fields include gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, media and the sociology of family life. Drawing on Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, the authors identify causes for this paradigm shift, which include the contributions of specific individuals, the general intellectual climate and various social changes such as globalisation and neoliberalism.
