BOOK PROPOSAL FOR "WILDERNESS OF THE SOUL Rodney R. Romney WILDERNESS OF THE SOUL is a book about personal spiritual growth. It begins with the premise that life is a love story designed by a loving God, who calls each of us to be a part of that story. The book makes a frank and eclectic examination of a Wilderness God, a Deity that no religious system has been able to define or control. Rather than viewing God as a capricious prankster or bully, who toys with our lives just to test us, the book sees God as a mysterious presence who cannot be controlled or denied, but who loves everything unconditionally. The book advances the life of Jesus as an example of the wilderness life, one who became alienated from his own religious tradition, because it imposed too many restrictions and excluded too many people. By entering fully into the wilderness of his own soul, Jesus found a path that brought him into the mystery of an all-inclusive and all-loving God. The major portion of the book details ten stages (or marks) of spiritual growth for the one who seeks to explore the authentic or God-realized life. The initial stage is exile, which we all experience when we first enter this earth experience, and the final stage is graduation (or death). We go through these ten stages of growth and learning in order to learn the highest lesson of all: how to make our lives an expression of unconditional love to God and to the world. The book concludes by asking the question, "Whose Side Is God On?" with particular reference to the complex and troubled situation of our world today as it hovers on the brink of war. WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS BOOK? This book offers the analogy of wilderness as a teacher that seeks to lead us toward spiritual fulfillment. It will have special appeal to a growing audience of people who are learning to honor the earth, to those who see truth in all spiritual and religious traditions, and to those who are searching for the transforming presence of the divine in their human experience. The book includes practical suggestions by offering spiritual exercises for each stage of growth. These exercises are presented without theological strictures or bias, thus making an appeal to an interfaith audience. The book also includes service and social justice as an inseparable outgrowth of spiritual practice. Social action is not viewed as separate from spirituality, but rather is presented as essential to its completion. The book also offers occasional glimpses into the life of the author. Most people do not want to hear only moral invectives when it comes to the inner life. They want to know something about the life of the person who is writing. Therefore, I occasionally include aspects of my own struggle in the various stages of spiritual growth. WHO IS THE PROSPECTIVE AUDIENCE FOR THIS BOOK? Church growth analysts often overlook the fact that the fastest growing religious group in this country is not fundamentalism or liberalism, nor what might be classified as "new age." The new and rapidly expanding group can best be described as the de-churched, or to use John Shelby Spong's term, "Believers in Exile." These are people who have discovered that institutional religion as they have known it does not meet their needs, because they can no longer accept the religious presuppositions of their past. Yet their spiritual hunger remains strong, and they search for ways to nourish their own hunger. It is to this huge, often recognized, group that WILDERNESS OF THE SOUL will make its appeal. It is a book that addresses the universal spiritual hunger that every person has, yet it does not impose strict theological dogmas or religious dictums. Its premise is that the human soul is the greatest wilderness of all, a wilderness that waits to be explored, and it offers suggestions and ways by which that exploration can be conducted. Spirituality is a comparatively new word in the English language that speaks of a growin

Daniel

The book of Daniel demonstrates the glorious wisdom and unmatched power of God at work in his people. It shows that in spite of difficulties, confusion, and persecution, God is in control and will deliver his people as he has promised. Through dreams and visions given to Daniel—not fully understood in their own day—God reveals that his sovereign rule will continue until the end, when all of his purposes will be fulfilled. Only through the light of the New Testament can we understand these mysteries given to Daniel, some of which aren’t made clear until the final pages of Scripture. With faithful exposition, pastor Rodney Stortz walks readers through this prophetic book verse by verse, explaining Daniel’s historical context and offering practical applications. He focuses on the promises given to the faithful, the sovereignty of God, and the coming Messiah and Antichrist—shedding light on Daniel’s prophecies by looking at the New Testament teaching on the final kingdom that will never pass away. Part of the Preaching the Word series.
An Introduction to Consulting Psychology

An Introduction to Consulting Psychology

Rodney L. Lowman

American Psychological Association
2016
pokkari
This book provides a broad introduction to consulting psychology that reviews assessment and intervention at three levels of competency-individual, group, and organizational-including how these levels interact. Consulting psychology is a burgeoning yet sometimes underappreciated discipline whose goal is to empower clients and improve workplace functioning. In this book, Dr. Lowman describes this fulfilling and important work, translating theory and research into a succinct and accessible overview that will familiarize students, psychologists from multiple disciplines, and others with the field. Lowman reviews how consultation helps clients at three levels-individual, group, and organizational. Using illustrative case examples, he samples issues that can arise at each level and describes appropriate tools for assessment and intervention. The various consulting activities surveyed include: screening potential job candidates coaching individuals to help them adapt to new roles and manage relationships with colleagues evaluating and improving work group dynamics, such as communication patterns and working with different organizational cultures to enhance system-wide processes and structures. Leadership is given special focus as a complex topic that spans all three levels and requires the consultant to consider a host of variables. Multiculturalism and internationalism are also examined as competencies that consulting psychologists must possess in our increasingly globalized society. Lowman also considers important professional standards and guidelines for consulting psychologists, including the APA Ethics Code.
The Ethical Practice of Consulting Psychology

The Ethical Practice of Consulting Psychology

Rodney L. Lowman; Stewart E. Cooper

American Psychological Association

Psychologists who work in business and other organizational settings encounter unique ethical issues that are not found in traditional clinical practice. This volume provides an overview of these issues for consulting psychologists, graduate students, and practitioners in other fields who want to transition to organizational consulting. Using the APA Ethics Code as its foundation, the book teaches readers how to make ethical decisions when conducting assessments and applying interventions with individual employees, work groups, and entire organizations, small and large. Authors Rodney Lowman and Stewart Cooper explore common themes in ethical practice, including informed consent, confidentiality, multiple relationships, conflicts of interest, and competence. They demonstrate how these issues manifest differently in the work environment through vivid case examples that bring to life the concrete work of consulting psychologists. These informative vignettes teach readers how to negotiate complex challenges, such as when organizational demands and corrupt business practices come into conflict with psychologists amp rsquo ethical responsibilities. Special attention is also given to emerging areas of practice, including telepsychology, multinational and multicultural consulting, and coaching.
Career Assessment

Career Assessment

Rodney L. Lowman

American Psychological Association
2021
pokkari
This book will help career assessors offer practical guidance that can make a real difference in people's lives. Key assessment factors include occupational interests, abilities, and personality characteristics. Career and work contribute significantly to personal and life satisfaction-and, when they are problematic, to personal unhappiness and stress. In this comprehensive career assessment book, Rodney L. Lowman addresses the three major areas that matter the most for understanding and helping people with their career choices: occupational interests, abilities (broadly defined), and personality characteristics. Chapters examine how these factors relate to career satisfaction, how to assess them using psychometric measures, and how to integrate the results of these assessments with the clients amp rsquo specific needs and goals. Detailed case examples are included, as well as a nuanced discussion of ethics and technology. Lowman amp rsquo s career assessment model is one of the few that aims to fully integrate vocational interests, abilities, and personality characteristics-three domains that have proven their value in career assessment across a broad range of career concerns. By applying this model, career assessors can offer practical career guidance that makes a big difference in peoples' lives.
