Dress in Auschwitz

Dress in Auschwitz

Exploring the experience of Auschwitz prisoners through the lens of dress and clothing, Dress in Auschwitz examines clothing's profound importance to the inmates' physical, psychological, and spiritual survival.Drawing on a wide range of sources, including survivor memoirs, testimonies, personal interviews, surviving garments, and rare illustrations, Sofia Pantouvaki focuses on inmates’ sartorial activities and the intimate psychological relationships that developed between prisoners and their clothes. In so doing, she highlights how clothing was vital in facilitating inmates’ daily lives, improving their chances of survival in the camp, and supporting the desire for personal expression in a dehumanizing environment.Holocaust survivors’ memoirs and interviews have increasingly evidenced that the infamous striped uniforms were not the standard clothing throughout the years of the Nazi concentration camp system. As the war continued and shortages intensified, prisoners were often given a wide range of garments, including uniforms of deceased Soviet prisoners-of-war and civilian garments from the piles of clothing of other incoming prisoners.Dress in Auschwitz allows us a glimpse of the persons’ individual - and sometimes very private - experiences of concentration camp life and suggests that the notion of ‘elegance’ operated as a social construct and a motivating force even in such punishing conditions. The book proves that the multifaceted functions of dress can remain relevant - and vitally important - even in the most appalling and inhumane conditions and times.

Tasks, Pragmatics and Multilingualism in the Classroom

Sofía Martín-Laguna

This book reports on a longitudinal study of the acquisition of pragmatic markers in written discourse in a third language (English) by secondary students living in the bilingual (Spanish and Catalan) Valencian Community in Spain. It examines pragmatic transfer, specifically positive transfer, in multilingual students from a holistic perspective, taking into account their linguistic repertoire and using ecologically valid classroom writing tasks in a longitudinal study. It tackles the issue of task-based language teaching from a multilingual perspective by presenting a study which takes place in natural classroom contexts where real classroom tasks are used to explore the interaction between languages in multilinguals. The book combines a focus on multilingual language development and pragmatics and discusses the resources multilingual learners take to the classroom.

In Ecowomanism at the Panamá Canal: Black Women, Labor, and Environmental Ethics, Sofia Betancourt constructs a transnational ecowomanist ethic that reclaims inherited environmental cultures across multiple sites of displacement. Betancourt argues that as survivors of the inconceivable, as carriers of cultural values and communal accountability, and as those who have never been allowed to reject or forget our their own embodiment, women in the African diaspora have a unique understanding of how a moral refusal to compromise their humanity provides the very understanding needed to survive what was once an inconceivable level of environmental devastation. That wisdom redefines our ideas of survival itself, and in doing so gives us new knowledge on what it means to live a value-centered, human life. This understanding of human nature and its interrelatedness with all of creation draws from the moral wisdom of women in the African diaspora. Most specifically, this work is guided by the experiences of West Indian women, imported to Panamá by the United States from across the Caribbean, whose labor supported the building of the Panamá Canal—the so-called silver men and women who faced mud, mosquitoes, and malaria while building a literal pathway to American empire.

How Babies Sleep: The Gentle, Science-Based Method to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night
Discover the best baby sleep method--gentle, science-backed, and inspired by the latest Nobel Prize-winning research--that shows you how to get your baby to sleep through the night naturally.Sleep--or the lack of it--is one of the most crucial issues for new parents. Newborn babies typically wake every two to three hours, and there's nothing bleary-eyed, exhausted parents want more than a night of uninterrupted sleep. But while there's plenty of advice out there, there is nothing that's based on the latest cutting-edge research about sleep--until now. In How Babies Sleep, Sofia Axelrod, PhD--neuroscientist, sleep consultant, and mother of two--introduces the first baby sleep method that is truly rooted in the science of sleep. After having her first child, Axelrod realized that the typical baby sleep advice conflicted with the actual science of sleep, inlcuding the findings from her mentor's Nobel Prize-winning sleep lab. She developed her transformative method based on the latest discoveries about our body's circadian clock and how it is disturbed by light and other external stimuli. After seeing incredible results with her own babies, she has since counseled countless families in her groundbreaking method--which works with babies' needs and helps little ones learn to self-soothe, fall asleep more easily, and stay asleep through the night. You'll discover helpful tips that work, and learn: why using a red lightbulb (instead of a regular one) in the nursery at night can minimize wakings; why the age-old advice "don't wake a sleeping baby" isn't true; how to create a healthy routine; how to sleep train gently with minimal crying (under two minutes); and so much more in this revolutionary and effective book that will help both you and your baby enjoy a peaceful night's sleep.
Rape Myths

Rape Myths

Myths and misconceptions surrounding sexual violence are thought to be implicated in the prevalence of rape and in the lack of justice for women who have been subjected to rape. Rape Myths comprehensively examines the theoretical background, prevalence, assessment, and functions of these beliefs. Outlining the meaning and feminist foundations of rape myths, this book also considers their conceptualisation as the measurable construct of Rape Myth Acceptance (RMA). Drawing on the authors’ research, the book details the prevalence of RMA among different public and professional groups, as well as the societal consequences of these pervasive beliefs, particularly in terms of treatment within the criminal justice system. RMA is considered in the crucial context of its scaffolding within wider sexism in society and its perpetuation in the media. Looking ahead, Persson and Dhingra question how well rape myth prevention works. Can society reduce the prevalence of these beliefs? If so, how? Including a detailed overview of the psychometric properties of tools used to measure RMA, and a methodological manual for designing and executing research in this area, Rape Myths is a practical guide for those seeking to research rape myths and other attributions in rape cases.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Millie Partridge desperately needs a party. So, when her (handsome and charming) ex-colleague Nick invites her to a Hebridean Island for New Year’s Eve, she books her ticket North. But things go wrong the moment the ferry drops her off. The stately home is more down at heel than Downton Abbey. Nick hasn’t arrived yet. And the other revellers? Politely, they aren’t exactly who she would have pictured Nick would be friends with. Worse still, an old acquaintance from Millie’s past has been invited, too. Penny Maybury. Millie and Nick’s old colleague. Somebody Millie would rather have forgotten about. Somebody, in fact, that Millie has been trying very hard to forget. Waking up on New Year’s Eve, Penny is missing. A tragic accident? Or something more sinister? With a storm washing in from the Atlantic, nobody will be able reach the group before they find out. One thing is for sure – they’re going to see in the new year with a bang. Tense, moody and claustrophobic, Auld Acquaintance is the unputdownable debut by Sofia Slater.
