This Element introduces the concept of institutional weakness, arguing that weakness or strength is a function of the extent to which an institution actually matters to social, economic or political outcomes. It then presents a typology of three forms of institutional weakness: insignificance, in which rules are complied with but do not affect the way actors behave; non-compliance, in which state elites either choose not to enforce the rules or fail to gain societal cooperation with them; and instability, in which the rules are changed at an unusually high rate. The Element then examines the sources of institutional weakness.

The 5th edition of Environmental and Natural Resources Economics: Theory, Policy, and the Sustainable Society expands on successful previous editions by adding new chapters on non-market valuation, ecosystem services and the use of behavioral economics for environmental policy, and reorganizing the text with a new methodology chapter that presents the tools in the environmental economist’s toolkit. In addition to these four new chapters the revised edition also incorporates a series of active learning exercises and in-class games to help students gain a deeper and immediate understanding of the key concepts being taught throughout the text. The text is organized into four sections. The first section, Theory and Fundamentals, introduces the reader to the core principles of economics used throughout the text. The second section, Policy, illustrates how economic tools and methods are used for environmental policy analysis, focusing on incentive regulation, compliance and crime, and political economy. The next section, Natural Resource Economics, presents an introduction to natural resource economics, followed by an in-depth chapter on fisheries and a new chapter on ecosystem services. The final section, Topics on the Economics of Sustainability, introduces the concept of sustainability and then provides detailed examples and case studies in sustainable economic development, issues in sustainable production and issues in sustainable management of common pool resources. The textbook is designed for use in an environmental and natural resource economics course, and as with prior editions, is versatile enough to work either for economics majors or for students in interdisciplinary environmental studies/science programs.

George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff (c.1866-1949) is acknowledged as one of the most influential early teachers of a hybridised Eastern-Western esoteric spiritual tradition, and one of a few key influences on the contemporary New Age Movement and a myriad other alternative spiritualities and new religions. Positioning Gurdjieff's teachings within the field of New Religious Movements, this book examines the 'Work' (as Gurdjieff's system is commonly called), including his teachings presented in writings, music, and exercises known as 'Movements'. This critical introduction to the Gurdjieff tradition also provides an analysis of problems with unreliable sources and auto-mythology, examines major pupils and successors, and shows how the 'Work' functions in the contemporary spiritual marketplace. Offering an excellent introduction to anyone unfamiliar with Gurdjieff and his context, this book also provides further depth for scholars and an invaluable companion to literature examining Blavatsky, Steiner, Theosophy, and Anthroposophy.

The triumphant vindication of bold theories-are these not the pride and justification of our life's work? -Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear Sir Arthur Conan Doyle The main purpose of our book is to present and explain mathematical methods for obtaining approximate analytical solutions to differential and difference equations that cannot be solved exactly. Our objective is to help young and also establiShed scientists and engineers to build the skills necessary to analyze equations that they encounter in their work. Our presentation is aimed at developing the insights and techniques that are most useful for attacking new problems. We do not emphasize special methods and tricks which work only for the classical transcendental functions; we do not dwell on equations whose exact solutions are known. The mathematical methods discussed in this book are known collectively as asymptotic and perturbative analysis. These are the most useful and powerful methods for finding approximate solutions to equations, but they are difficult to justify rigorously. Thus, we concentrate on the most fruitful aspect of applied analysis; namely, obtaining the answer. We stress care but not rigor. To explain our approach, we compare our goals with those of a freshman calculus course. A beginning calculus course is considered successful if the students have learned how to solve problems using calculus.

The Golden Age of Basketball - Volume II by Steven A. Roseboro continues the retrospective of one of the greatest Decades in NBA History; Volume 2 begins with the seminal NBA Draft of Michael Jordan, Akeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley and John Stockton, followed by Jordan and Patrick Ewing leading the 1984 United States Olympic Basketball Team to the Gold Medal in Los Angeles. In the 1985 Laker-Celtic NBA Championship rematch Superstars Bird and Magic were upstaged by ageless wonder Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, whose MVP performance at age 38 led the Lakers to their first Championship victory vs. the Celtics in 9 tries. Bird's Celtics would regain the Title in 1986, only to watch Magic storm back in 1987 & 1988 to lead the Lakers to the first Back-to-Back NBA Championships since Bill Russell's Celtics in 1969. The next wave of NBA Superstars took their place at the end of the Decade, led by the incredible Jordan, the MVP of the 1988 season. Gritty Isiah Thomas would close out the Eighties by leading his blue-collar "Bad Boys", the Detroit Pistons to the Franchise's first NBA title in 1989. These brilliant performances by future Hall of Famers Magic, Bird, Kareem, Isiah, Jordan, Olajuwon, Barkley, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Patrick Ewing, Dominique Wilkins and Clyde Drexler are captured by Mr. Roseboro on over 100 action photos where you can reach out and touch the intensity of the competition .
Political Corruption and Scandals in Japan

Political Corruption and Scandals in Japan

Matthew M. Carlson; Steven R. Reed

Cornell University Press
2018
sidottu
Combining history with comparative politics, Matthew M. Carlson and Steven R. Reed take on political corruption and scandals, and the reforms designed to counter them, in post–World War II Japan. Political Corruption and Scandals in Japan makes sense of the scandals that have plagued Japanese politics for more than half a century and attempts to show how reforms have evolved to counter the problems. What causes political corruption to become more or less serious over time? they ask. The authors examine major political corruption scandals beginning with the early postwar period until the present day as one way to make sense of how the nature of corruption changes over time. They also consider bureaucratic corruption and scandals, violations of electoral law, sex scandals, and campaign finance regulations and scandals. In the end, Carlson and Reed write, though Japanese politics still experiences periodic scandals, the political reforms of 1994 have significantly reduced the levels of political corruption. The basic message is that reform can reduce corruption. The causes and consequences of political corruption in Japan, they suggest, are much like those in other consolidated democracies.
