LARGE-PRINT EDITION The original edition of this book was a tribute to Stuart McLean after his death on February 15, 2017, and it was produced as quickly as possible to honour him in a timely manner. Despite our best efforts, however, that edition included too many errors. And, as we discovered much later, several other tales worthy of inclusion were left out because of the pressure of meeting our deadline. Accordingly, we completed this new edition only after several series of proofreading and revision so that we could come as close as humanly possible to perfecting the refined, polished-to-a-high-sheen, smooth-to-the-touch product you hold in your hands now. In addition, the author added sixteen stories, along with his only fan letter to Mr. McLean. Fear not, however, because this volume retains Jess Milton's original introduction, the author's preface and a new introduction by the author for this release. Every story in this volume meets the same criteria as before: Like the stories from "The Story Exchange" segment of The Vinyl Caf , these stories are short (with some exceptions), and they are true, but not without Mr. Mittendorf's honed and studied writing skills. And, like Mr. McLean's Dave & Morley stories, these lean toward the humourous side but include elements of the inspirational. Also, like the Dave & Morely stories, these tales are all interrelated through the characters. The unexpected result of this formula is that, while you read these stories, you become as familiar with the characters as you would in any memoir written with a single, linear plot. So the stories in this volume comprise an "episodic memoir: " One person's life rendered as a series of short, biographical tales. Think about the works of James Harriot, and you'll get the idea. Each story in this book opens and closes as a letter to Mr. McLean because that is how Mr. McLean seemed always to read the "Story Exchange" stories on the air-as letters, even though it is not necessarily how all the writers wrote them. This unique tradition is also the inspiration for this book's title.
Gilbert Stuart: Master Portrait Painter
Our founding fathers (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson et al) were always one step ahead of history and having an artist of such immense talents as Gilbert Stuart to paint their portraits has made the images of our founding fathers indelible in the minds of the modern reader. As a TJ enthusiast I often wonder how amazing it must of been to have "sat" for Gilbert Stuart a known storyteller and have your portrait painted. Mr. Jefferson was a favorite portrait sitter and this book is a lovely trip down memory lane (circa 18th century) to read about the fascinating story behind the portraits and the artist.

Which of them is the rightful Queen of England - Mary Stuart or Elizabeth Tudor? Mary Stuart, written in 1800 by Friedrich Schiller, is presented in this new version by Mike Poulton following his Don Carlos for Sheffield/West End. The play was produced at Clwyd Theatr Cymru 7-30 May 2009. 'Magnificent ...Mike Poulton's fleet and vivid translation ...all the deftly plotted twists and turns of a thriller. You lean forward in your seat, desperate to discover what happens next ...a masterpiece' Daily Telegraph on Mike Poulton's version of Schiller's Don Carlos.
Gilbert Stuart and the Impact of Manic Depression

Gilbert Stuart and the Impact of Manic Depression

Early American painter Gilbert Stuart has long been mistakenly represented as a hard-drinking rogue, habitual liar, and inexplicable financial failure. To explain his stylistic unevenness as an artist, he is assumed to have had an inferior assistant, but the documentary evidence for an assistant who painted on his portraits is non-existent-in fact, there is evidence to the contrary. This ground-breaking study demonstrates that Stuart suffered from a hereditary form of manic depression, leading him to create pictures that contain peculiar lapses characteristic of a manic-depressive, or bipolar, artist. Using documentary and empirical evidence-from diaries and letters to x-radiographs of paintings-this book fills important gaps in our knowledge of Stuart, and connects the strange visual effects in some of Stuart's paintings with cognitive deficits attendant with the disorder. In addition to Stuart, other bipolar artists, including George Romney, Raphaelle Peale, Gilbert Stuart Newton, and William Rimmer, are discussed in relation to these deficits, revealing patterns which carry broader implications for all manic-depressive artists. This volume is a significant contribution not only to studies of Stuart and the four other painters but also to our understanding of the mind of a manic-depressive artist. It bridges the broad disciplines of art history and psychopathology.
