Pacific Northwest Ferns and Their Allies

Pacific Northwest Ferns and Their Allies

Although the ferns and their allies are a small group of about 10,000 species compared to the 275,000 species of seed plants, their lineage is a long and noble one going back to the carboniferous period 300 million years ago when they were the dominant form of plant life in the swap-forests. Ninety-seven species of attractive group of plants are described in this this column, about one-quarter of the total found on the whole continent north of the Mexican border. Each species is described in detail, and the description is supplemented by a clear line drawing and a map showing its distribution as represented in the larger collections of the continent. The drawings are original and based on specimens carefully selected the show diagnostic details. Keys are provided to the families, genera, and species so that a plant can be placed quickly and easily in its proper category. The book also includes a list of chromosome numbers, a list of species grouped by distribution patters, and a glossary of the technical terms used. This is the first comprehensive treatment of the pteridophyte flora of the large area comprising Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, the Yukon Territory, and Alaska to the Arctic Ocean. In this region, climate varies from warm to arctic cold, precipitation varies from 200 inches annually to less than 10, and altitude varies from sea level to over 20,000 feet. Arranged in alphabetical order by family, genus, and species, this volume brings together in convenient form the critical judgments of experts who have written about the pteridophyte flora of the Northwest. Both the professional biologist and the naturalist will find much in this volume of interest and value.

This is the first English translation of one of the most important treatises written during the late-Middle Ages in defense of converts from Judaism, favoring religious tolerance in the face of religious and racially motivated prejudice and violence. The book also includes a fresh Latin edition, drawing on all known manuscripts. The text was written in response to the actions of the "Old Christians" of Toledo against the "New Christians," also called conversos, in 1449. A letter of Pope Nicholas V favouring the converts is included.

This three volume set on World War II German swords by LTC (Ret.) Thomas M. Johnson, a leading collector and authoritative researcher, is a follow-up to his successful and highly acclaimed four volume series on World War II German daggers by Schiffer Publishing (1995). Johnson is the author of some twenty-six reference books on the subject of German edged weaponry. This sword series has been designed to aid not only the beginning collector, but also the seasoned advanced collector and specialist. These volumes are the result of many years of arduous research conducted on both sides of the Atlantic, and are a scholarly study that is more than a perfunctory annotation and illustration of the known basis patterns. Also, the series is a study of a culture and the crafts that actually produced the blades, as well as being a manual in the art of collecting them. The embracing scope is both educational and recreational, and adds a whole new dimension to this popular collecting subject as a whole. Within these books one finds the historical background, the manufacturing techniques, constructional information, the actual basic patterns, variations and rarities, and a whole host of salient facts of absorbing interest.

This text explores the intersection of the questions: "What is human being?", "What is language?" and "What is theology?" The text seeks to answer them by investigating problems that arise when modes of thought disagree on the relationship between experience, language and theological inquiry.
Reading Marx Writing

Reading Marx Writing

Reading Marx Writing uses the eight notebooks (the Grundrisse) Marx worked on in 1857-58 to examine his literary, political, and scientific imagination. By exploring the Grundrisse, the project or plan that Marx did not carry through, the author speculates on the limits and possibilities of Marx's interpretive approach for addressing current issues in philosophy and hermeneutics, critical sociology, political economy, aesthetics and literary criticism. The study employs certain literary works - notably a scene from Goethe's Faust and several stories from Balzac's Come;die humaine - as looking-glasses or sounding boards for Marx's political and scientific concerns and to connect themes emerging from the cultural economy of the nineteenth century. Using an innovative blend of German critical theory, French post-structuralism and Anglo-American cultural criticism, the author develops a unique method for articulating the play of image, text, and even music within Marx's human scientific discourse.

The Fire of Tongues

The Fire of Tongues is a study of the religious and social thought of the Jesuit António Vieira (1608-97), one of the great preachers, writers, and missionaries of the seventeenth century. A key actor in European and Ibero-American politics of the period, Vieira argued throughout his seventy-year career that the Portuguese nation was destined to lead the Catholic church in its mission to convert the Jews of Europe and the non-Christian peoples of the New World. The tension between the missionary enterprise and the Portuguese imperial agenda provides The Fire of Tongues with its principal theme. The author focuses on three periods in Vieira's career. The first is his mission to Brazil (1653-61), which took place during an era marked by conflict between the Jesuit missionaries and their fellow Europeans. The latter resented the Jesuits' responsibility for administering the allocation of Indian workers, and Vieira exacerbated the conflict by bringing under Jesuit control the notorious slaving expeditions the Portuguese were conducting in the backlands. After being forcibly returned to Portugal by his opponents, Vieira spent five years in the custody of the Inquisition (1663-67).The author argues that the Inquisition's persecution of Vieira was a result of his criticism of the church hierarchy in the Luso-Brazilian world, set forth in his preaching and prophetic writings. For Vieira, the New World was a locus of prophecies that the Portuguese had been providentially chosen to reveal. Every group that participated in the imperial project—the crown and settlers, the missionaries and Indians, and the Inquisitors—had a role to play in the schema of revelation that Vieira drew from scripture and then read into Portuguese history and into the history of the missionary church. When Vieira returned to Brazil for the last time (1681-97), he brought with him an interpretation of colonial society and of the missionary vocation that differed greatly from the one he had brought to the Amazon almost thirty years before. No longer did he seek to enlist all Portuguese society in the missionary enterprise. Instead, Vieira focused in his later writings on two groups he believed could successfully advance that enterprise: the Jesuits and the Portuguese crown. Rather than being infused with the tongues of fire as the Apostles were on Pentecost, the Jesuits, Vieira argued, were infused with the fire of tongues manifested in their mastery of the languages they encountered in the mission field. Armed with the fire of tongues, the Jesuits would build a church that would embrace the many languages and peoples of the New World.

A social, economic, and political study of Philadelphia merchants, this study presents both the spirit and statistics of merchant life. Doerflinger studies the Philadelphia merchant community from three perspectives: their commercial world, their confrontation with the Revolution and its aftermath, and their role in diversifying the local economy. The analysis of entrepreneurship dominates the study and challenges long-standing assumptions about American economic history.

Building a nation by envisioning the future. The development of the American nation has typically been interpreted in terms of its expansion through space, specifically its growth west-ward. In this innovative study, Thomas Allen posits time, not space, as the most significant territory of the young nation. He argues that beginning in the nineteenth century, the actual geography of the nation became less important, as Americans imagined the future as their true national territory.Allen explores how transformations in the perception of time shaped American conceptions of democratic society and modern nationhood. He focuses on three ways of imagining time: the romantic historical time that prevailed at the outset of the nineteenth century, the geological ""deep time"" that arose as widely read scientific works displaced biblical chronology with a new scale of millions of years of natural history, and the technology-driven ""clock time"" that became central to American culture by century's end. Allen analyzes cultural artifacts ranging from clocks and scientific treatises to paintings and literary narratives to show how Americans made use of these diverse ideas about time to create competing visions of American nationhood.
