Fresh from a successful voyage in the Baltic, Captain Tim Phillips returns home, where his ship is sent to the dockyard for much needed repairs. Phillips travels to his home to re-unite with his family. Upon receiving a summons to the Admiralty, he learns his ship has been destroyed by fire. Along with the command of a newly built brig, he receives orders for a cruise in the Mediterranean, where the wife of an important government official has been taken by pirates. His mission will be to attempt the almost impossible task of locating the woman. Upon his return, secrecy considerations require that ship and men be sent to waters far from Britain. Should the press discover some of the details of the last mission, much damage would result. Therefore, he sails away on another mission to foreign parts to suppress attacks on shipping of the East India Company in the Indian Ocean. The young captain hopes his notoriety will have died down by the time he returns home.

“The works of Tim O’Brien are among the most significant recent contributions to a lengthy canon of war literature,” write the editors of this volume; they serve “as an ideal point of entry for discussions of war and its human impact.” The author of the highly acclaimed The Things They Carried, O’Brien is a Pulitzer Prize finalist and the winner of a National Book Award for Going After Cacciato. This volume in the Approaches to Teaching series considers the range and depth of O’Brien’s writing, with an emphasis on works that focus on the Vietnam War. Part 1, “Materials,” provides information on O’Brien’s life and an overview of his literary output. It also directs readers to critical and reference works on subjects encountered in his writing. The twenty-three essays in part 2, “Approaches,” provide historical background on the Vietnam War; explore narrative issues in O’Brien’s works, such as the melding of fiction, nonfiction, and memoir; and suggest ideas for teaching the author’s works in a variety of classroom and conceptual settings (e.g., composition, American literature, war fiction, narrative theory, postmodernism).

LOAC Essentials Presents King Features Volume 2: Tim Tyler's Luck 1933
Lyman Young
Library of American Comics
2016

These never-before-collected strips represent an essential transition point that would forever change the direction of adventure comics. Lyman Young's Tim Tyler's Luck was a successful series set in exotic locales before Alex Raymond signed on as Young's assistant. It's in these 1932-1933 strips, as Raymond assumed greater and greater responsibility for the drawing, that he developed the prototypes for Flash Gordon, Dale Arden, and Jungle Jim, and the style for which he became famous a year later. LOAC Essentials reprints, in yearly volumes, the daily newspaper strips that are essential to comics history, seminal strips that are unique creations in their own right, while also significantly contributing to the advancement of the medium. The strips are reproduced one per page, giving readers an immersive experience, similar to the one newspapers readers had many decades ago-reading the comics one day at a time.
