Wilhelm von Oranien, 1533 als Sohn eines deutschen Reichsfursten geboren, kam als Elfjahriger in die Niederlande. Dort entwickelte er sich zu einem der einflussreichsten Hochadligen am Hof der damaligen habsburgischen Landesherren Kaiser Karl V. und Philipp II. von Spanien. Die Politik Philipps liess ihn seit den 1560er Jahren zu dessen erbittertem Gegner werden. 1584 fiel er im hollandischen Delft einem Attentat zum Opfer. Wilhelms Lebensweg wird vor dem Hintergrund der politischen Kultur unseres Nachbarlandes im 16. Jahrhundert geschildert. Trotz aller Widerspruche war sein Handeln von normativen Kontinuitaten gepragt, die in seinem Selbstverstandnis als Hochadliger wurzelten.Schon zu seinen Lebzeiten setzte die propagandistische Inszenierung seiner Person als "Vater des Vaterlandes" ein. Eines Vaterlandes, das sich bald zur Republik wandeln sollte. Diese Entwicklung hatte Wilhelm nicht intendiert; sie legte aber den Grundstock fur das bis heute populare Bild des Oraniers als Kultfigur des niederlandischen Freiheitsmythos.
