Though sometimes identified as an "Indian writer in English," Shahid came to designate himself as a Kashmiri-American writer in exile in the United States, where he lived for the latter half of his life, publishing seven volumes of poetry and teaching at colleges and universities across the country. Locating Shahid in a diasporic space of exile, the volume traces the poet's transnationalist attempts to bridge East and West and his movement toward a true internationalism. In addition to offering close formal analyses of most of Shahid's poems and poetry collections, the contributors also situate him in relation to both Western and subcontinental poetic forms, particularly the ghazal. Many also offer personal anecdotes that convey the milieu in which the poet lived and wrote, as well as his personal preoccupations. His ancestors had been dervishes and religious men. Because of the death of his father during his childhood he did not have any regular instruction in a school. He had a profound, natural ability for creating poetry that eventually gave him access to the court of Nawab Mohammed Taqi Khan Taraqqi, who took him to Lucknow. At Lucknow he sought and was given instruction in writing poetry by Mushafi, then an important poet of the Lucknow school of poetry (a short biography and ghazal by him is included). Later he came under the influence of the controversial Nasik (1776-1838), another great Sufi poet of Lucknow (a short biography and ghazal by him is also included). A contented, self-¬respecting man Aatish led a simple life and never bowed to nobility to gain favours. This freedom of spirit and ascetic-like lack of concern for worldly comforts is reflected in his poetry. His words are simple and carefully chosen. Some critics rank him beside Mir and Ghalib. His ghazals are Sufi in flavour on the traditional themes of human and divine love. He went blind towards the end of his life. His Urdu Divan is composed of ghazals and ruba'is and a qasida. Ali and Nino is a novel published in German in 1937 under the alias "Kurban Said," a love story between a Muslim man and a Christian woman set in Baku, Azerbaijan, during World War I and the country's brief independence. Itwas a major success, translated into several other languages, but was forgotten by the end of World War II. Recent research by the journalist Tom Reiss has revealed the identity of the author as Lev/Leo Nussimbaum (1905-1942), aJewish man born in Baku who converted to Islam, worked as a journalist in Berlin, and died forgotten in exile. Reiss's discovery has spurred new interest in the novel, as has the fact that the book prefigures today's perceived conflicts between East and West or Islam and Christianity, but also suggests a more peaceful model of intercultural living in multiethnic Baku's melting pot of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. The present volume collects twelve newessays on different aspects of the text by scholars from a variety of disciplines and cultural backgrounds.
