Andrew Cranston (b.1969, Hawick, Scotland; lives and works in Glasgow) is a painter-storyteller, a way of working that is enhanced by his often painting on the linen-bound covers of old books. His stories coalesce in the process of making – the paintings emerging gradually through the manipulation of his materials: layering, lacquering, bleaching, collaging and constantly re-working his way into images that seem to shift backwards and forwards in time. He once described a work as ‘a painting that came out of my brush one day’, a statement that sums up his approach. They are resolutely contemporary in spirit and yet connected by a strong thread to painters of the past, especially perhaps to the intimism of Vuillard and Bonnard, or to Matisse or Munch. These are narrative paintings, drawn from the artist’s memory and observations of life and liberally sprinkled with references to cinema, literature and art history. This publication presents a selection of the book cover paintings for which Cranston has become so well known in recent years. The cover image is a detail of _Cat and cheeseboard_ (2018) in which a cat sits on the upholstered arm of a sofa surveying what the artist describes as ‘a selection of bries and camemberts, as mousetraps’. Other animals pop up from time to time – a horse, some fish, a leopard; the skeleton of an elk. There are still lifes with fruit, flowers and/or pottery, and lots of landscapes, from the bleak to the fantastical. There are peopled and unpeopled interiors, portraits of family members and celebrities (occasionally curious hybrids thereof), and childhood memories from school classrooms and classical music-filled assemblies to holidays in Switzerland and visits to granny’s flat. And there are quite a few watering cans too. Each featured painting is accompanied by a text based on notes made by the artist before, during or after making a work. Mostly private thoughts, memories and anecdotes, these fragments jotted down on scraps of paper or tapped into his mobile phone were never intended to be published, but the resulting texts offer personal observations and reflections that Cranston considers ‘something like album sleeve notes where a musical artist might give some background to each song’. The texts are at times amusing, at others melancholic and moving, offering illuminating insights into the mind and life of the artist and the subjects, references and influences that feed into his painting practice. There are notes about technique and colour, about family and friends, about particular places at certain moments in time. For Cranston, writing has become ‘another way of engaging with painting and of activating the interesting afterlife that a work can have when it leaves the studio and goes out into the world.’ _Andrew Cranston – Never a Joiner_ has been produced by Ingleby, Edinburgh, and co-published with Anomie Publishing, London. It has been published to coincide with an exhibition of the same name at Ingleby, Edinburgh, and launched as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival 2023.Andrew Cranston was born in Hawick in the Scottish Borders in 1969 and currently lives and works in Glasgow. The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Sir Andrew Caldecott
Weird Tales of the Oriental and OccidentalAndrew Caldecott was not pre-disposed to be an author of strange fi ction or indeed of any other genre. Born in England in 1884 during the Victorian age, he was bound for the Colonial Offi ce to be an administrator for that 'empire upon which the sun never set'. By 1934 he was Acting Governor of the Straits Settlements (which included Malacca, Dindings, Penang and Singapore) followed by an appointment to the governorship of Hong Kong and thereafter of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) until 1944. He was knighted in 1935. Caldecott, however, also engaged in several diversions beyond his professional life. Although he had contributed several articles concerning Malayan history to journals, his excursions into the literature of the supernatural came late in life with the publication of two volumes of shorter ghostly fi ction, ' Not Exactly Ghosts' (1947) and, 'Fires Burn Blue' (1948). Although he was awarded numerous decorations during his lifetime and has several roads, an underground railway station (and a hill )named after him in Singapore, it may be that posterity will remember him for these fi nely crafted chilling tales written, one may imagine, for his own entertainment. Predictably several of these stories have oriental themes drawn from an exotic world with which he was most familiar and take their styling cuesin keeping with several amateur supernatural fi ction authors- from M.R. James. Sir Andrew Caldecott died in 1951. 'Sonata in D Minor', 'Seated One Day At The Organ', 'A Victim of Medusa' and many other tales will be found in these pages.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Andrew Cuomo's Time to Go? "He Was Never that Great!": Andrew Cuomo says America was 'never that great.' Get rid of him instead of America!
Learn what Andrew Cuomo, the esteemed (by some) Governor of New York thinks of America by reading this book. It is the best thing you can do to understand why the Governor in our second largest state (tied with Florida by population) is so negative about our great country and its founding. This book not only gives Cuomo's perspective, and the perspective of his millennial followers, it is the best starter book for anybody wanting to refresh their knowledge or learn about America. This book helps us all understand the founding and how its basic principles of government assure our freedom and liberty. Freedom and liberty may not be too important for The bold and brash and far left Andrew Cuomo, but for most Americans, there is nothing more important.America's founders were smart, intelligent, and selfless men. The New York contingents from which Cuomo follows have been anti-American from when their representatives at the Constitutional Convention, John Lansing, and Robert Yates, chose not to sign the documents in support of the Constitution even though fellow statesman Alexander Hamilton chose to cast NY's vote as "aye."When Pennsylvania's Benjamin Franklin said: "We must indeed all hang together or most assuredly, we shall all hang separately, he gave away the essence of the seriousness of the task facing America's founders. For as trite as some seem to portray the founding today, it was a serious undertaking by serious men who had been pushed around enough by King George. There is no reason from anybody to be ashamed of America today or its founding. It is certainly unfortunate that our country is led by corrupt and greedy politicians, such as Andrew Cuomo and perhaps others of his ilk, who have taken control of many levels of governments in America. The good news is that most US citizens and others are hopping on the Train of Freedom to win back America from the forces of evil. Incompetent governors who hate conservatives in our society, such as Andrew Cuomo, son of Mario, are slow to learn but over time, Americans hope they too will get the real message. In the meantime, Americans pray that New Yorkers will never vote another Cuomo into office again. This book is positioned as today's solution for would-be chumps to be better prepared to react to the overreach of praetorian politicians such as Andrew Cuomo and elite establishmentarians, who hope to set the country back three hundred years. With statements like 'America was never great, ' it shows they would be happy to replace freedom with a hand-out-based government that controls the people and not vice-versa. Freedom loving people from across the world come here for freedom and opportunity. Those in this country who may say that America is not a great country should take a one-way trip to Russia or Mexico. Good riddance to Mr. Cuomo. Too bad he is trying to be reelected in NY only to stage his sorry self for a run for President. Americans must stop him. This book is a quick way for you to learn about the real America and not the misimpressions of socialist progressive whackos and their millennial sycophants. . This book shows why the many blessings of our founding principles need not be replaced. Rather than get rid of America; a better option is to get rid of Cuomo, the current Governor of New York State. Just because corrupt and powerful officials choose to ignore the rights and freedoms of American citizens does not mean we must endure their tyranny. The first step of course is to understand the founding and the most basic written precepts describing America and our rights as Americans. Reading this book about America's greatness is a must for every US citizen. I bet you will not be able to put this book down.
