Finalist, 2020 Miller Williams Poetry Prize In the same way that the speaker in these poems often seems itinerant, lacking a place or person to call home, the poems themselves have their own roaming quality. The reader is moved somewhere unexpected, the poems seem to shapeshift or suddenly beckon from somewhere else, or they may zoom into focus. Like a succession of Russian dolls, the poems open toward and magnify the concealed, removed, or forgotten. Throughout, whether from cosmic or microscopic perspective, the details here are handled tenderly, and these poems, even with their constant sense of mobility, return to and are anchored by the familiarly human.

The 7 Deadly Sins (of Writing) takes a whimsical approach to correcting common “pitfalls of prose” that any writer can use to grow in their craft. Borrowing an idea from the Middle Ages, the book likens each of the seven Deadly Don’ts to the Seven Deadly Sins—and flips each one on its head so the reader can take away a Divine Do instead. As a veteran book editor, the author shares the most common mistakes she sees writers make and how they can avoid them.
My Big, Dumb, Invisible Dragon

When a young boy loses his mother, an invisible dragon swoops in and perches on top of his head. A most unwelcome guest, the dragon follows him to school, sleeps on his chest at night (making it hard for him to breathe), and even crashes his birthday party. As the boy comes to terms with his mother’s death, however, his relationship with the dragon changes in surprising ways. My Big, Dumb, Invisible Dragon is a story for children dealing with loss, particularly the death of a parent. Although grief is a heavy topic, Angie Lucas and Birgitta Sif handle it deftly for children, using the metaphor of the dragon, a light tone, and touches of humor. The book shows that healing takes time and that it’s OK to experience a wide range of emotions as you process a really big loss.

Twelve-year-old Bone possesses a Gift that allows her to see the stories in everyday objects in this supernatural historical mystery. The first title in a series -- now in paperback! In southern Virginia coal-mining town in 1942, Bone Phillips has just reached the age when most members of her family discover their Gift. Bone has a Gift that disturbs her; she can sense stories when she touches an object that was important to someone. She sees both sad and happy--the death of a deer in an arrowhead, the pain of a beating in a baseball cap, and the sense of joy in a fiddle. There are also stories woven into her dead mama's butter--yellow sweater--stories Bone yearns for and fears. When Bone receives a note that says her mama's Gift is what killed her, Bone tries to uncover the truth. Could Bone's Gift do the same? Here is a beautifully resonant coming-of-age tale about learning to trust the power of your own story.

A riot of flowers in polymer clay but this time made like never before using stencils to 'print' the plant parts. This little handbook is largely intended as an aide to using Angie Scarr Miniatures stencils effectively but it is also full of hints and tips about getting materials and colours right and how to display your work. Stencilling with a mix of solid polymer clay and liquid clays (Goo) is a new adventure for both Angie and her students. Until now the world of miniature flower making traditionally centred around three basic materials; paper, cold porcelain and solid polymer clay, each of which have their drawbacks as well as their benefits, and each of which required a lot of patience to produce the flowers in large enough numbers to fill a dollhouse shop. These ideas look at new and different ways of using polymer clay to produce beautiful, delicate flowers and plants which are resistant to moisture and can be semi translucent, in delicate subtle or glorious strong colours without individual painting of leaves and petals. You don't have to have endless patience to use these simple techniques. Just a love of flowers and a love of miniatures "I invent easy ways of doing things because I'm essentially lazy and lacking in patience." Angie.
