Building Procurement

Building Procurement

As an industrial process, construction is unique. The procurement processes used to achieve the successful completion of built assets requires a different approach to that adopted in most other industries, due to the design of buildings being bespoke and the sites being geographically varied. The procurement process is central to the success of any construction project and many of the problems which impact construction projects can be traced back to the procurement phase, so a good understanding of the methods of procurement, the development of a procurement strategy and the influence it has on project success is essential for all those working in the industry. Much has changed in the global construction industry since publication of the second edition of Building Procurement, for example the increase in debt burden of many major economies, widespread adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) Technology in the industry and the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union. This new edition has been rewritten to take account of these significant developments, but at its core it continues to provide a critical examination and review of current procurement practices in the UK, continental Europe (including EU procurement procedures), China, Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa and the USA. It retains its original strong emphasis on the need for clients to establish achievable objectives which reflect the project business case and focuses on development of suitable strategies and management structures to meet those objectives in the current construction climate. Building Procurement will be essential reading for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students of construction management and practitioners working in all areas of construction management.

Threats of cyberattacks targeting the electric power grid have been increasing in recent years. The consequence of cyber incidents on the power grid includes equipment damage, cascading events, large-scale power outages, and disruption of market functions. Government and industry have made a significant effort to strengthen the protection of the power infrastructure against cyber threats by setting standards and guidelines. This survey paper provides the basic concepts of cyber vulnerabilities of distribution systems and cyber-physical system security. Important ICT subjects for distribution systems covered in this paper include Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), including renewable energy and smart meters. This publication is intended to serve as a module in senior-level undergraduate as well as graduate courses in power engineering. The objective of this paper is to provide fundamental concepts of cyber security for the distribution system as a cyber-physical system. To meet the objective, vulnerabilities of cyber intrusions and mitigation strategies are discussed. The evolution of the ICT for the power grid and cyber security measures are presented, as well as the ICT in the power system environment. An overview of smart grid communication standards and protocols are included, and the detection of cyber intrusions in distribution systems are considered. Finally, simulation cases are provided.

Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2019 The Aga Khan Award for Architecture is one of the most prestigious and renowned awards for architecture worldwide. Since 1980 the Award has been given every three years to projects that combine social and ecological aspects and translate them into innovative and exemplary design. The Award seeks to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of societies across the world, in which Muslims have a significant presence. This publication presents the shortlist of the 2017–2019 award cycle. From a group of almost 400, 20 projects have been shortlisted by the Master Jury and evaluated by an expert group of technical reviewers. Some of these projects have been honoured with the Aga Khan Award. In addition to detailed descriptions of all projects, this book gathers a series of personal statements from the members of the Steering Committee and the Award’s Master Jury on key issues that were crucial in the discussions for the final selection and assignment of the award recipients. Assembled together, this book presents a selection of the outstanding examples of sustainable and socially relevant architecture in the world today and opens up fundamental perspectives for the planning of the future.

This is the first full-length biography of George James Christian. Originally from Dominica, Christian qualified as a barrister-at-law in London, participated in the first pan-African conference and migrated to the Gold Coast in 1902 where he established his home and a complex extended family. He ensured that his children were well educated and they followed his tradition of service to the community. Shortly after his arrival in the Gold Coast, he established a legal practice that successfully served a wide range of clients. His friendship with the renowned Dr James K. Aggrey, as expressed in their correspondence during the establishment of Achimota College, together with a discussion of the experience of Christian’s children as staff and students there, provide fresh data on this important Ghanaian institution. The book also sheds light on Christian’s service in the Legislative Council, his role as honorary consul for Liberia, his involvement as a Freemason, businessman and philanthropist.
